Howard Levy Full Bio The Early Years Howard Levy began playing piano at age 8. He started improvising after his 3rd piano lesson, and would often improvise for 30 minutes or more. His parents enrolled him in the prep division of the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied piano for 4 years with Jean Graham, and also studied music theory. When Howard was 11, The Manhattan School recommended that he study composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. A place for him was guaranteed, but neither he nor his parents wanted him to disrupt his life at age 11 and move to Europe for a year. Howard had a deep love for classical music, but around age 12 he started to become interested in many other styles of music - pop, folk, rock and roll, then Blues and Jazz. While in high school in New York City, Howard won his school’s “Lincoln Center Award”, given to the outstanding musician in the school. He also studied Bach on the pipe organ for 2 years. This was a major influence that has continued to this day. 4 years ago, Howard received his high school’s “Distinguished Alumni” Award. While in high school, he composed “Extension Chord”, an odd- time meter Jazz piece using Indian rhythmic formulas. He eventually recorded this in 2008, with German bass clarinetist Michael Riessler and French accordionist Jean-Louis Matinier on their Enja CD “Silver and Black”. Howard attended Northwestern University, where he played piano in the university’s Jazz Band, led by jazz musicians Bunky Green and Rufus Reid.

George ROBERT Born on September 15, 1960 in Chambésy (Geneva), Switzerland, George Robert is internationally reCognized as one of the leading alto saxophonists in jazz today. He started piano at a very early age and at age 10 he began Clarinet lessons at the Geneva Conservatory with LuC Hoffmann. In 1980 he moved to Boston and studied alto saxophone with Joe Viola at the Berklee College of MusiC. In 1984 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Composition & Arranging and moved to New York where he enrolled at the Manhattan SChool of MusiC. He studied with Bob Mintzer and earned a Master’s Degree in Jazz PerformanCe in 1987. He played lead alto in the Manhattan SChool of MusiC Big Band for 2 years, whiCh earned in 1985 the 1st Prize in the College Big Band Category in the Down Beat Magazine Jazz Awards In July 1984 he performed on the main stage of the Montreux Jazz Festival and earned an Outstanding PerformanCe Award from Down Beat Magazine. In 1985 & 1986 he toured Europe extensively. In 1987 he met Tom Harrell and together they founded the George Robert-Tom Harrell Quintet (with Dado Moroni, Reggie Johnson & Bill Goodwin). The group Completed 125 ConCerts worldwide between 1987 & 1992, and reCorded 5 albums. He remained in New York City and free-lanCed for 7 years, playing with Billy Hart, Buster Williams, the Lionel Hampton Big Band, the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Jazz OrChestra, Joe Lovano, and many others. He met Clark Terry and started touring with him extensively, Completing a 16- week, 65-ConCert world tour in 1991.

Sumi Tonooka Pianist & Composer Biography n his liner notes to pianist, composer and Ieducator Sumi Tonooka’s fifth and latest CD, Long Ago Today, journalist Russ Musto restates his praise from thirty years ago: “. it has been a pleasure to hear her blos- som into one of the most talented musicians of her generation.” Today, Tonooka (pro- nounced To-NO-ka) reignites her successes as an architect at the keyboard with Long Ago Today (Artists Recording Collective), released nationwide on March 25, 2008. She’s joined by bassist Rufus Reid (who has appeared on all of her releases) and the late drummer Bob Braye. Nine of the ten tunes are penned by her. Born on October 3, 1956 in Philadelphia, a city that has few rivals in terms of its rich music history — jazz, gospel, punk, R&B, The Philly Soul Sound — Tonooka experienced unfettered freedom at the piano as a young child. She started piano and music instruction at the age of seven at the Settlement Music School in Philly with Ester Cinberg and then Gary Goldschneider. Tonooka, who grew up in a multicultural household, was introduced to the extramundane con- cepts and executions of pianist Thelonious Monk at the age of 13. “My parents took me to see Thelonious Monk ‘live’ at the Aqua Lounge for my thirteenth birthday and it was then and there . that’s when I decided to be a jazz musician.” He, along with pianist/composer Duke Ellington and close associate and admirer pianist Kenny Barron, have been her torches in the night as she’s glanced through and past many ideologies and perceptions of performance and tunesmithing.

PAUL, MN – Three composers have been selected as participants for the first annual ACF CONNECT program offered by the American Composers Forum (ACF) in partnership with the highly acclaimed Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble (PNME). Long recognized for its world-class performances and commitment to new work beyond the premiere, PNME is a perfect match for the ACF CONNECT program. Selected participants will have an opportunity to work with the ensemble over 18 months, culminating in a highly produced performance in July 2018. “It is an honor to launch our new ACF CONNECT program with these exceptional composers,” says John Nuechterlein, President and CEO of ACF. “They each bring a distinctive voice to the fabric of American music, and their interaction with each other and PNME will be an extraordinary opportunity for them to grow as artists, build new networks and engage new audiences.” The three selected composers, whose musical voices represent the diverse landscape of music being created today, were chosen out of 370 applicants from across the country. So he [fellow band member] didn’t like the record and he sold it to me for a dollar. I heard Miles Davis and it aroused my curiosity because I didn’t understand what they were doing. But the sound was overwhelming”. While attending Boston’s Harvard University in the early 70s, Tana cultivated a friendship with drummer Billy Hart that sparked his nascent interest in jazz percussion. Hart sug- gested Akira seek out veteran drummer Alan Dawson at Berklee College of Music. There followed one and a half years of intensive tutelage under Dawson that taught him tech- niques and exercises he employs to this day, both in his own teaching and in his playing. Following graduation from Harvard in 1974, Tana entered the New England Conservatory of Music where he gained a sold grounding in classical percussion.

So how does the saxophonist with the extremely long ponytail fare with this group? Just fine. Hegarty has respectfully compiled this set in honor of his mentors, which includes a lot of saxophonists. Over 10 tunes, he tackles the works of George Coleman, Joe Henderson, Frank Foster and, most prominently, Jimmy Heath. Reid opens the proceedings by laying down a foundation for Heath’s “A New Blue,” return- ing later in the tune for a subdued solo. Foster’s bluesy waltz “Simone” is treated to a soul-satis- fying rumble with Hegarty breathlessly taunt- ing his horn from top to bottom. ED SOPH TRIO BIOGRAPHIES Ed Soph Ed Soph is internationally recognized as an author, teacher, and musician. As a performer and recording artist Ed has played with the big bands of Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Bill Watrous, and Clark Terry. Small group credits include Joe Henderson, Bobby Shew, Carl Fontana, Clark Terry, and David Liebman. Ed is currently recording and touring with trumpeter Marvin Stamm’s Quartet, with Bill Mays on piano and Rufus Reid on bass, with bassist Eddie Gomez’s trio, and with pianist Dan Haerle’s quartet. In addition to recording and touring, Ed is a professor in the College of Music of the University of North Texas. He has presented clinics internationally and nationally at major professional conventions of the Percussive Arts Society, the International Association of Jazz Educators, and the Jazz Education Network. Master classes have been presented at the Sydney (Australia) Conservatorium, the Royal Conservatory in Stockholm, Sweden, and the Liceau Conservatory in Barcelona, Spain as well as universities throughout the U.S. and Canada.
