Rio 2016 Hopefuls Cox Higuchi Debut in Freestyle World Rankings From: Tim Foley [email protected] Subject: Rio 2016 Hopefuls Cox, Higuchi Debut in Freestyle World Rankings Date: July 6, 2016 at 2:40 AM To: [email protected] Rio 2016 Hopefuls Cox, Higuchi Debut in Freestyle World Rankings By William May CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (July 5) – Rio 2016 hopefuls Rei HIGUCHI (JPN) and Jayden COX (USA) make their debut in the United World Wrestling rankings for freestyle after turning in persuasive performances in June during the early run-up to the August 5-21 Olympic Games. Higuchi won a pair of titles on Japan’s pre-Olympic tour of Europe to go from unranked to No.10 at 57kg. At the Ziolkowski International, Higuchi edged world bronze medalist Vladimir DUBOV (BUL), 4-3, in the final after running over European silver medalist Andrey YATSENKO (UKR) by technical fall in the quarterfinals. Cox, meanwhile, edged European runner-up Aleksander GOSTIEV (AZE), 3-2, and came from behind to defeat world bronze medalist Alireza KARIMIMACHIANI (IRI), 6-2, at the World Cup meet in Los Angeles. Cox fell to European bronze medal winner Dato MARSAGISHVILI (GEO), 7-4, in the U.S.-Georgia dual meet for third place and joins the rankings at No.10. Marsagishvili, looking for a return the Olympic Games after a bronze medal at London 2012, climbs from No.12 to ninth. Also, newly minted Russian national champ Muhamadgazi MAGOMEDOV (RUS) joins the rankings for the first time at No.12 after finishing runner-up to world bronze medalist Bilyal MAKHOV (RUS) at the Ziolkowski International. All eight wrestlers at the top of the rankings hold onto to their places with only a couple of the leaders in action in June. Georgia’s rankings leaders Vladimir KHINCHEGASHVILI (57kg) and Geno PETRIASHVILI (125kg) were perfect with four wins each at the World Cup, leading Georgia to the third-place trophy in Los Angeles behind Iran and Russia. At 125kg, reigning world champ Taha AKGUL (TUR) appears to still be struggling with a leg injury and forfeited all four his bouts at the World Cup, slipping from No.2 to fourth at super heavyweight. World champ Abdulrashid SADULAEV (RUS) racked up technical falls in four of his five bouts at 86kg to run away with the middleweight title in Poland. Wrestlers in the rankings are listed by name, country code, most notable or most recent result over the last 12 months, and their position in the previous rankings. 57kg – Rei HIGUCHI (JPN), headed to Rio 2016 as Asia qualifying tourney winner, bagged a pair of titles at the Macedonian Pearl and the Ziolkowski International to join the rankings at No.10. 1. Snyder rolled to victory at the Yarygin Grand Prix, one year after finishing third in Krasnoyarsk (RUS), to head into the new year with his No.1 ranking at 97kg intact. Petriashvili, meanwhile, prevailed in Paris to support his claim to No.3 at 125kg. Yet, while only a handful of wrestlers in the top 10 of each category were in action in January, many of the medalists in Krasnoyarsk and Paris were unranked or positioned in the lower half of the rankings. This resulted in some churn in the second 10 as they look ahead to the continental championships this spring. World military champion Alan KHUGAEV (RUS) made the biggest leap in the rankings with a win at 125kg in Krasnoyarsk, going from unranked to No.8. Khugaev notched a 3-2 win in the final over Anzor BOLTUKAEV (RUS), who spent three months atop the 97kg rankings in 2016 before slumping to 11th in Rio de Janeiro. Also, at the Yarygin Grand Prix, Dauren KURUGLIEV (RUS) climbed one place to No.7, after defeating Mahammasjavad EBRAHIMIZIVLAEI (IRI), 4-3, in the final at 86kg.

  • Benefits of Greco-Roman Wrestling for Folkstyle Wrestlers
Benefits of Greco-Roman Wrestling for Folkstyle Wrestlers Jake Deitchler made the 2008 USA Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling team as a wide-eyed 18-year-old just a few months removed from high school graduation. A three-time Minnesota state high school champion for Anoka High School, Deitchler grew up a firm believer in the motto "spring and summer wrestlers make winter champions." So it was never a question for Deitchler —during the offseason he would always train and compete in Greco-Roman wrestling. After all, it had worked for another local legend—Anoka was also home to Brandon Paulson, a 1996 Greco-Roman Olympic silver medalist. So, growing up, Deitchler had seen first-hand the benefits of training in what is often the sport’s most overlooked wrestling style. Deitchler went on to compete for the University of Minnesota, where his career was cut short due to an injury. But he has recently opened up Takedown Gym, a youth and high school wrestling and fitness training facility in Brainerd, Minnesota, where he still maintains the same philosophy. Kids who train at his facility, Deitchler emphasizes, will be taught the fundamentals and benefits of Greco-Roman wrestling. "It’s great from the standpoint that it teaches you how to stand toe-to-toe with your opponent and fight to win the battle in the neutral position, control ties, and ultimately develop a feel for the combative nature of our great sport," Deitchler says. Because a wrestler only has half of their opponent’s body to score on, they’re forced to develop hand-fighting skills such as snaps, Russian arms (or 2 on 1), underhooks, in addition to getting a feel in upper body throws and positions, he explains.
