HEFCE LGM PROJECT: Leading Curriculum Change for Sustainability - Strategic Approaches to Quality Enhancement EXPERT ADVISORY BOARD – MEMBERS’ PROFILES (updated V2) Mr Anthony McClaran (Chair) Chief Executive, Quality Assurance Agency Anthony McClaran took up post as Chief Executive of QAA on 1 October 2009, after nearly six years as Chief Executive at UCAS. He joined UCAS in 1995 to lead the then Academic Services and Development department, and was appointed Deputy Chief Executive a year later. He became Acting Chief Executive in January 2003 and was appointed Chief Executive in December of that year. A graduate in English and American Literature from the University of Kent, Anthony began his career at the University of Warwick where, among other posts, he was Admissions Officer. In 1992 he moved to the University of Hull to take up the post of Academic Registrar, with responsibility for an office which included recruitment, admissions, student records, international affairs and the internal allocation of resources. In 1995 he was appointed Acting Registrar and Secretary. Anthony sat on the Council of the University of Gloucestershire from 1997 until 2005 and in September 2007 was appointed Chair of Council, a post he relinquished on taking up his QAA role. Professor Chris Brink Vice-Chancellor, Newcastle University Professor Chris Brink is the Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University in the UK. He is the academic and executive head of the University, and serves on several Boards in Newcastle and the Northeast of England. At national level he is the Co-Chair of the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU), serves on the Board of the UK Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), and is a member of the Advisory Committee on Leadership, Governance and Management of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). -

Introduction Equality and diversity present an increasingly challenging agenda for the higher education sector. We now have seven protected equality areas – gender, race, disability, sexuality, religion, age and gender reassignment. These account for some significant and entrenched inequalities and imbalances in the sector. But the relationship between the equality areas and an individual’s identity is often complex, and the equality areas do not automatically equate to inequality and disadvantage. Evidence for Equality, Equality Challenge Unit’s conference held in Manchester in November 008, sought to engage with these issues. The two-day event focused on using a secure evidence-base that recognises these complexities but also informs actions and priorities. -

No doubt we will in consequence have an interesting time ahead. Despite the national and global perturbations, however, Newcastle University has had a good year, as you will read in this review. Student satisfaction improved against a national trend downwards. Our research activity continues to grow strongly and we were generally pleased with the results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The Great North Museum has welcomed record visitor numbers. Our ‘Ten Steps for the North East’ programme to help the region through the economic downturn has won regional and national acclaim and our major building investment programme is progressing well. -

Impact of Science A 3-day Conference on the Transformative Power of Research In partnership with: Online, hosted from 23-25 June Cape Town, South Africa 2021 BACKGROUND In the past year the world has become more visibly depending on science than ever before. At the same time the credibility and legitimacy of science and the international scientific community have faced increasing battles under the troubling times of the past year. This crisis has shown light on the extended need for inclusive economic development, and effective assessment of what works and what doesn’t, on top of ever growing issues such as climate change, poverty or inequality. Thus, this year’s Impact of Science conference will focus on The Transformative Power of Research and brings together science impact professionals to discuss how to evaluate and increase impact of science on our global society. With these goals in mind there is no better place to host the conference from than South Africa. Rapidly developing, working on a national impact agenda and ways to shorten the research impact cycle, and the National Research Council, universities, and many other stakeholders have been gaining skills and knowledge about how to use science for tackling problems such as the triple challenge. Initiatives for collaboration between the academic world, government, industry and society sprout from the ground, but there is still much to do. Therefore South Africa is the ideal host for our conference on the transformative power of research that will accelerate the solutions that science and society need. This conference is featuring highly regarded and internationally recognised experts who will be discussing the contribution of their research to the quality of life and well-being. -

This year was characterised by notable events and developments at Rhodes University, which you can read all about in this edition. This year has been a journey in exploring sustainable institutional growth, reimaging our practices and engaging in transformation to become an inclusive, engaged institution, while retaining our academic excellence. As we say goodbye to 2017, we welcome the new year warmly and hope that our Old Rhodians will continue to prosper and inspire our upcoming graduates. The Rhodes Alumni Team Council Decides on the Name of our University Rhodes University stays! On 30 November 2017, the Rhodes University Council made a decision regarding the University’s name. Out of 24 members of Council who were present and eligible to cast a ballot on this motion, 9 members voted for the motion and 15 voted against the motion to change the name of Rhodes University. It is necessary to reflect upon the context and process of the consideration and decision by Council on the name of the University. Given the financial strain that the University has experienced over the past two years, following the #FEESMUSTFALL campaign, Council has had to approve a deficit budget for two consecutive years.
