Preface As widely known, the term ‘prostitution’ is regarded as a negative taboo word in Japan. Probably because of this, the word ‘Fuzoku(1)’, which is the euphemism of prostitution, has been recently commonly used to refer to the sex industry itself, brothels and sex workers. This paper intends to clarify the status quo of sex workers, and eventually reveal the taboo through comparative studies on the cases of Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Japan is opposed to Australia and New Zealand not only geographically but also in terms of re- sponses for prostitution including the welfare/health policies. Therefore, this paper mentions firstly the situations and problems sex workers in those three countries are faced with, in the process of which it will be hopefully clear at last why I conclude “The way to unionisation of sex workers” as a solution. II. Situation in Japan In Japan, the occupations and places related to prostitution began to be generally called ‘Fuzoku’ in the end of twentieth century and, the term has been commonly used since the beginning of twenty-first century. And, the ‘Fuzoku’consists mainly of escort agencies widely known in Western countries and brothels. The escort agencies in Japan have almost the same management system as those in Western countries; women (mostly) registered by the agencies are dispatched to hotels upon request via phone call or the like, while the system of brothels is rather complicated. -
Love Motels: Oriental Phenomenon Or Emergent Sector?
Love Motels: Oriental Phenomenon or emergent sector? Abstract Purpose This study explores the ‘Love Motel’ concept by examining the changing attitude of consumers in Taiwan. This will increase knowledge of the sector and define love motels. Design/methodology/approach The literature review charts the development of Taiwanese love motels from a duel origin; American Motels and Japanese ‘Love Hotels.’ This is followed by an empirical qualitative study consisting of a twostage collection strategy: focus groups of hospitality and tourism professionals to gather a wide range of opinions on the subject area followed by semi structured interviews with consumers. Findings The findings split into three interrelated areas: growth of Taiwanese love motels due to more liberal attitudes towards sexual practice; a change in the public perception of motels due to increased standards and an increased satisfaction with the personal consumption experience; these hotels are designed for couples. Research limitations/implications The empirical element of this study is an exploration of consumer experience in Taiwanese love hotels. Due to the sensitive nature of some of the data that was gathered a qualitative approach has been adopted. Practical Implications The sexual associations with this product appear almost coincidental. If the love motel product is considered in its purest form it is simply a hotel product that provides complete anonymity for its guests. Therefore, despite its application in South East Asia, this hospitality concept has potential to be applied in a variety of guises. Originality/value The phenomenon of ‘Love Hotels’ is absent from hospitality management literature; this paper begins to fill that gap by beginning a discussion on this possibly controversial sector. -

Japan Review 26 Special Issue Shunga (2013): 169–93 Analyzing the Outrageous: Takehara Shunchōsai’s Shunga Book Makura dōji nukisashi manben tamaguki (Pillow Book for the Young, 1776) C. Andrew GERSTLE This article examines the book Makura dōji nukisashi manben tamaguki (1776) with illustrations by Takehara Shunchōsai in the context of a sub-genre of shunga books—erotic parodies of educational textbooks (ōrai- mono)—produced in Kyoto and Osaka in the second half of the eighteenth century. A key question is whether we should read this irreverent parody as subversive to the political/social order, and if so in what way. Different from the erotic parodies by Tsukioka Settei, which focused mostly on women’s conduct books, this work is a burlesque parody of a popular educational anthology textbook used more for boys. It depicts iconic historical figures, men and women, courtiers, samurai and clerics all as ob- sessed with lust, from Shōtoku Taishi, through Empresses and Kōbō Daishi to Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The article considers whether recent research on Western parody as polemic is relevant to an analysis of this and other Edo period parodies. The article also considers the view, within Japanese scholarship, on the significance of parody (mojiri, yatsushi, mitate) in Edo period arts. The generation of scholars during and immediately after World War II, such as Asō Isoji (1896–1979) and Teruoka Yasutaka (1908–2001) tended to view parody and humor as a means to attack the Tokugawa sys- tem, but more recent research has tended to eschew such interpretations. The article concludes by placing this work among other irreverent writing/art of the 1760s–1780s, in both Edo and Kyoto/Osaka, which was provocative and challenged the Tokugawa system. -

Wilson, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2015 During the mid-1950s to the early 1970s a subversive cinema, known as the Japanese New Wave, arose in Japan. This dissertation challenges critical trends that use French New Wave cinema and the oeuvre of Oshima Nagisa as templates to construct Japanese New Wave cinema as largely male-centered and avant-garde in its formal aesthetics. I argue instead for the centrality of the erotic woman to a questioning of national and postwar identity in Japan, and for the importance of popular cinema to an understanding of this New Wave movement. In short, this study aims to break new ground in Japanese New Wave scholarship by focusing on issues of gender and popular aesthetics. -

Álvarez Delgado - Universidad Complutense de Madrid – [email protected] Resumen Desde que a mediados del s.XX comenzaran a distribuirse en occidente las primeras creaciones de animación japonesa o anime, hasta la actualidad, donde millones de personas consumen y se han convertido en fervientes seguidores de este producto audiovisual, especialmente a través de internet. Se pueden describir una considerable sucesión de circunstancias que han contribuido a conformar lo que actualmente entendemos como cultura anime. Sucesos históricos, creencias populares, situaciones económicas, y en definitiva un conjunto de particularidades que tras ser cuidadosamente descritas y analizadas han permitido establecer una mejor comprensión del actual acontecimiento sociocultural que se extiende de manera global sobre el mercado del entretenimiento. El anime se muestra como una inagotable fuente de creación de productos audiovisuales y en su búsqueda por convertirse en un producto ampliamente consumible le lleva a explorar diversos caminos dentro de los géneros visuales. Uno de estos caminos corresponde al denominado hentai, (pervertido - obsceno) subgénero anime donde las secuencias sexuales son explicitas y pueden ir acompañadas de violencia.
