6 Deakin University The University Mace Maces were originally medieval weapons carried by bodyguards to kings and sergeants-at- arms. Much later, the mace became of ceremonial rather than practical significance and organisations such as civic corporations and universities adopted the mace as a symbol of the rule of legal authority. The University’s mace is displayed at meetings of the University Council and on such ceremonial occasions as conferring ceremonies. The bearer of the mace, in academic processions, ‘guards’ the Chancellor. Deakin’s mace was presented to the University by Mr Donald Thomson, Sir Wilfred Brookes and Mr Norman Stephen (Alcoa Australia).

Alfred Deakin Professor Council established the title of Alfred Deakin Professor to recognise members of Deakin University professoriate who have made a sustained, high level contribution to research at Deakin. The title is the highest honour the University can bestow on a member of academic staff. The title of Alfred Deakin Professor will be conferred upon Professor Tracey Bucknall.

Professor Bucknall has published over 125 journal papers, 1 edited book, 12 book chapters, and 26 research reports. She has an h-index of 23, which is outstanding for a nursing academic based on international comparisons. She received her first NHMRC grant as an early career researcher in 2000, as a member of the first ever nursing-only Chief Investigator team to be awarded an NHMRC project grant. Over the last five years she has led two Category 1 grants and been Chief Investigator in 5 others. She has obtained more than $11 million in competitive research funding, including $6.3 million in external funding and $2.4 million in research infrastructure support as a Chief Investigator. This success has been achieved despite most ARC and NHMRC grant rounds Professor Tracey Bucknall including only one nursing grant per round. Since 2001, she has delivered more than 180 Professor Tracey Bucknall joined Deakin as a presentations nationally and internationally joint University-Cabrini Health appointment on clinical decision making, patient safety and in 2007.
