BULOKE PLANNING SCHEME
22.11 HERITAGE INVESTIGATION 19/01/2006 VC37 This policy applies to buildings, works, sites and landscapes of local historical and architectural significance, including those buildings or places which are listed in the schedule to the Heritage Overlay.
Policy Basis
Buloke Shire contains important built and cultural heritage which characterises some of the rural landscape and much of the urban form and towns of the Shire. The conservation, protection and maintenance of this heritage has community, economic and cultural significance to the towns and rural areas of the Shire. In some areas of the Shire detailed conservation assessments of places and sites has not yet been undertaken and guidance for considering local heritage significance is required.
Objectives
To ensure that the local heritage is preserved and maintained as examples of local history and architecture. To ensure that new uses and development complements the historic and architectural integrity, character and appearance of the surrounding buildings, works, sites or landscapes. To identify and recognise the historical and cultural importance of significant heritage buildings, works, sites and landscapes. To identify and protect sites and places of Aboriginal cultural heritage. To support and undertake further detailed assessment of sites listed in the Table to this Local Policy and where appropriate include significant sites and places into the Heritage Overlay Schedule of the Planning Scheme.
Policy
It is policy that: The design, mass and scale of new buildings, alterations to existing buildings and the development of land consider the local character and heritage values of towns and where appropriate rural areas. The responsible authority shall have regard for the heritage overlay provisions and schedules within the planning scheme. New developments in the main streets of the Shire’s towns are to complement streetscapes, buildings and sites of local heritage importance. Buloke Shire will utilise the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Reference Maps, and seek the comment of Aboriginal Affairs Victoria when considering applications with potential to impact on places of Aboriginal cultural heritage. Places, buildings and sites not specified in the Heritage Overlay but listed in the following Local heritage table shall be considered as having local or state significance. (The sites and places listed below may be included in the Heritage Overlay controls of the panning scheme, following the preparation and consideration of a full citation).
