It made up mainly of a farming communities. The larger towns – St Arnaud, Donald, Birchip and Wycheproof – have small hospitals and aged care facilities. ATTRACTIONS, CULTURE AND CLIMATE: The East Wimmera region has a hotter drier climate than Melbourne. Summers are hot and dry, spring and autumn are sunny, and winters are mild. St Arnaud St Arnaud is a former gold mining town, which now supports agriculture industries of sheep farming, wineries and grain growing. The town itself is partially surrounded by forest. Wineries in the area include Kara Kara Estate in St Arnaud, Sally’s Paddock in Redback, and a little further south many wineries at Moonambel (closer to Avoca). See more information on yelp: www.yelp.com.au/search?cflt=wineries&find_loc=Saint+Arnaud+Victoria+3478%2C+Australia . The town centre has many historic buildings from the gold mining era, attractive gardens and parks, and sporting facilities. 3 The town of Stuarts Mill, where gold was first discovered in 1861, is 23km south of St Arnaud, and some old buildings also remain there from its mining days. For more information on St Arnaud see www.travelvictoria.com.au/starnaud/ . Donald Donald is situated on the Sunraysia Highway (B220) between St Arnaud and Birchip, 39 km from St Arnaud, and is in a region known for wheat, barley and lamb production. The township itself is surrounded by a number of lakes, including Lake Buloke, 8km north of the town, which is renowned for its local birdlife. Local and national artists have painted murals on a number of local buildings, which are quite striking (see below). More information on Donald can be found at: www.travelvictoria.com.au/donald/ . 4 Charlton Charlton is located 43km north‐north‐east of St Arnaud, and roughly 100km north‐west of Bendigo, on the Avoca River. It has long been known as a grain growing area, and this still the area’s main industry. The Avoca River (below) flows right through the town centre, and parks and walking tracks can be found alongside. Fourteen kilometres west of Charlton are the Wooroonook Lakes, popular for swimmers, fishermen, boaters and picnickers. For more information on Charlton, see www.travelvictoria.com.au/charlton/ . Birchip Birchip is situated 87 km north‐north‐west of St Arnaud on the Sunraysia Highway, on the southern edge of the Mallee. Farms in the area grow wheat, barley, canola, and other cereals. Most of the livestock in the district are sheep, though there are pig, turkey, duck and cattle farms also. Tchum Lake is 8km east of Birchip. Camping, swimming, boating, windsurfing, fishing, water‐skiing, BBQ’s and walking are popular activities. The Mallee Bull (below) is an icon of Birchip, and has been the backdrop of many visitor photographs since it was instated in the main street in 1991. See www.birchip.vic.au/ for more information. 5 Wycheproof Wycheproof is a small rural town located roughly 60km north of St Arnaud. The name Wycheproof originates from an aboriginal word meaning ‘grass on a hill’. The name refers to Mount Wycheproof, the smallest registered mountain in the world, at only 148 metres above sea level, or 43 metres above the sounding land. The town was established next to the old railway line from Bendigo, and unusually the line runs down the centre of the main street. Wheat is the main crop farmed in the area. Recently, in an attempt to attract new residents, the local community developed a scheme, inspired by a similar program in NSW, to off otherwise vacant farmhouses for rent at A$1 per week, attracting interest from people all over Australia and the rest of the world. 6 GETTING AROUND EAST WIMMERA: Public Transport.
