I am already receiving enquiries for 2013 and will start to provide more details early in 2011. All Burnetts will be welcome and, as always, we will endeavour to ensure that each visit will be particularly memorable and will have original events and activities. BURNETT REUNIONS I am aware that Burnett reunions and gatherings take place in many countries. We are always pleased to know of these and would be pleased to include photographs and other details in the Burnett Banner or on the website. James C. A. Birch Lieu dit au Guinot, Route de St. Barthélemy 47350 Montignac Toupinerie, France 21st February 2018 BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE BOUND VOLUME Although this document is only intended to exist in electronic form, I find it very convenient to have a hard copy to hand. It is easier to refer to a book than wait the five or ten minutes it takes to start up and close down a computer, just to obtain a single reference or check a fact. Books also give you the big picture of the document as a whole rather than the small-screen glimpses we have all got used to. Accordingly, I printed and bound a copy of this document in January 2005, which I have called the First edition, for convenience. Henceforth, I will bind a copy each January, provided the document has increased in size by at least ten percent during the year. At the same time, I will send an update to the web files on www.fipliterature.org, where the electronic version of this document is hosted. Since printing and binding is quite an expensive undertaking, I donated the obsolete volumes to important philatelic libraries round the world. By the middle of 2012, in line with my other documents, I simplified the set-up and turned off the remove widows and orphans feature. This resulted in a reduction in length of 15 pages. Reducing the amount of white space is an ongoing process in an effort to minimise the page count whilst not compromising usability.

    THE BU RNETT BAN NER Burnett Newsletter Edition No 7 (including House of Burnett September 2009 2009 BURNETT GATHERING We were very pleased to be able to host the Burnett Gathering at Crathes in July. This is the 5th reunion that we have enjoyed since 1992 and the compliments that we have received suggest that the visit was a success. Inside are photographs of some of the events but many more will shortly be available on the website together with a report on the programme. We did not attend the Homecoming Gathering in Edinburgh over the previous weekend but I am pleased that some of our visitors did attend that event which was known only some time after we had fixed our dates for Crathes. Although I look forward to our next Gathering for which the date will be announced in due course, we are always pleased to receive suggestions for the programme and how it might be conducted. There is a wide range of ages of those attending and it will be an objective for 201… to provide for all ages without departing from the principle reason for coming which is because we are Burnetts. WEBSITE FORUM Readers may notice that a recent addition to the Burnett website is the Burnett Forum. This is a feature in which global Burnetts, (and people with an interest in the name), can exchange information, pose questions and communicate on all relevant topics.     THE BU RNETT BAN NER B Burnett Newsletter Edition No 9 (including House of Burnett March 2010 BURNETT ART GALLERY There are a large number of talented artists amongst the Burnetts and it is the intention to include one or two Burnett works in each edition of the Banner. Since this has only been a very recent idea, I have had no time to seek contributions but I am using this opportunity to invite Burnetts to submit work to me for inclusion in future Banners. I have to point out the editor’s decision for inclusion is final and space will be limited. However, I welcome all contributions, regardless of the form of art, and would be grateful if they could be accompanied by the title of the work and the briefest of CV’s of the artist. For the opening of the Gallery, and for reasons that include appropriateness, I have selected a painting of Crathes which was given to me by the late Ruth Burnett Phillips who so sadly died recently and whose obituary is later in this edition of the Banner. The painting hangs beside my desk in my study. My wife, Fiona, took up painting only very recently and her first painting, The Dotty Mug, hangs in our kitchen at House of Crathes. Whilst there are professionals waiting in the wings for inclusions in future editions of the Banner, I also thought that it Crathes Castle would be nice to start this column with two The Dotty Mug Burnetts who have worked in art solely for their own pleasure.

McLaren The following list is a compilation of Clan Genealogists or Clan points of contact for genealogy (for the Scottish Clans and Family Associations). The amount of information available from these genealogists varies greatly, with some having extensive records. For example, the clan genealogist for Clan Scott maintains a database of all SCOTTs and is a coordinator of the SCOTT One Name Society. He has about 53,000 records on file dealing with more than 2,000 family lines. The clan genealogist/historian for Clan Barclay also is a coordinator for the BARCLAY One Name Society. She has about 19,000 BARCLAY/BARKLEY and collateral names on file dealing with 125 family lines. The Clan Morrison historian has a 6,000-name database of MORRISON families in the U.S. and Canada. Some clans have genealogy committees. When I learn about them I will include committee members in this listing. Some of these members only cover one or a few states. In these cases, I note the states that particular member covers. Also, some clan genealogists specialize in one surname of a clan. Clan MacKay, for example, has many surname genealogists. I am listing these surnames under the parent clan with a note (i.e., See also Mackie). The actual genealogist and his/her address will be listed under the surname (i.e., Mackie). For some clans, more than one society exists.

The approach of the Orangutan Foundation goes beyond that of purely protecting the orangutan. Critically it also includes recognition that orangutan habitat is unique in its richness of biodiversity and crucial for local communities, who are as dependant on the forest as is the orangutan. In his work on the evolution of man and language, Monboddo referred frequently to the Orangutan which he described as "an animal of human form, inside as well as outside" Monboddo believed that the Orangutan was human, had a sense of ethics, was able to play the flute and differed from civilised man in his fine decorum but had not yet attained the use of speech. He argued that dispositions and affections of his mind were sufficient to denominate him a man. This must be a cause that is worthy of support.     THE BURNETT BANNER Burnett Newsletter Edition No 15 (including House of Burnett News) September 2011 PHYLLIS ESLER PRESIDENT OF THE HOUSE OF BURNETT 24TH APRIL 1943 - 30TH JUNE 2011 See Page 2 OPERA ON THE LAWN I am disappointed to report that our birthday / anniversary event did not materialise as we had hoped although we were geared up to invite a large number of friends as can be seen from the invitation. The numbers of guests whom the organisers sought to attract and the logistics involved whereby all could see and enjoy what was a memorable performance, prevented what we had planned which were small operatic extracts throughout the gardens. However, the evening was a success and we will seek to mark our events in some other way. 2013 GATHERING Details for the next gathering are yet to be unveiled but, those who are thinking of attending, we will not disappoint. PHYLLIS ESLER We are very sad to hear that our President, Phyllis Esler, has lost her long struggle with her serious illness. Phyllis has worked tirelessly for the Society and has been largely responsible for the presence at many events over recent years. A tribute is paid to her elsewhere in this Banner, but I would also wish to thank her for her contribution towards promoting the name of Burnett and her work which that has involved. Our sympathy goes to Ron and all family and friends. In addition to being President of the House of Burnett, Phyllis was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Granite Falls, the American Business Women’s Association and the Grand Cross of Color.

We are making excellent progress with Monboddo the Musical. The script and the songs have been completed. Orchestration with the various arrangements for various instruments has already been completed for half of the songs. This has been done by Ken Hossick who is musical director with the Aberdeen Youth Music Theatre, which staged Les Miserables to great acclaim at the city’s His Majesty’s Theatre. Enjoyment of this production should be guaranteed! We have still to decide as to whether we will be present in Edinburgh for The Homecoming events in the capital. However, it is looking increasingly likely that family efforts will be concentrated on the following week for our own gathering here in the North East and to which, as always, we look forward.
