    Arthur Phillips, Prague (Scribe, 2010, c2002) The first thing to say about Prague is that it begins in Budapest. In the opening pages of the novel, five young American expatriates sit at a table in the Café Gerbeaud, playing a truth-telling game called Sincerity. Their rehearsed lies reveal more about them than their truthful statements. One character despises his brother; another is shallow and greedy; a third has fallen in love with one of the other players in the game. Arthur Phillips’ debut novel, published in 2002, is warm, witty and engaging. It is not the work of genius that some reviewers claimed it to be – it certainly did not bring ‘such giants as Proust and Joyce’ to my mind – but it is an insightful and entertaining novel. The reader follows the fortunes of the five players of Sincerity as they negotiate the social landscape of Budapest in the early 1990s, ‘immediately following the … hissing, flapping deflation of Communism’ (4). Charles Gabor, Mark Payton, Emily Oliver and Scott and John Price all work, study, fall in love and spend endless hours partying in the clubs and bars of Budapest. Their experience of the expatriate community is the theme and setting of the novel. It is the Americans whom we come to know rather than ‘their history-battered Hungarian acquaintances’ (8), because only one of the five protagonists speaks Hungarian. The others are ‘essentially illiterate’ (51) in the language of the country that they are living in, making no attempt to master anything beyond a few phrases. This ignorance is perfectly exemplified in the scene where Scott, an enthusiastic jogger, runs along the narrow, crowded footpaths of the city, innocently receiving the curses and complaints that accompany his progress with his sole Hungarian phrase, ‘kezet csokolom’ (‘I kiss your hand.’) The young Americans rely on the English vocabulary of their Budapest acquaintances, and Phillips overcomes the problem of their shallow knowledge of Hungarian society in the second section of Prague.

    JOHN CAGE’S ENTANGLEMENT WITH THE IDEAS OF COOMARASWAMY Edward James Crooks PhD University of York Music July 2011 John Cage’s Entanglement with the Ideas of Coomaraswamy by Edward Crooks Abstract The American composer John Cage was famous for the expansiveness of his thought. In particular, his borrowings from ‘Oriental philosophy’ have directed the critical and popular reception of his works. But what is the reality of such claims? In the twenty years since his death, Cage scholars have started to discover the significant gap between Cage’s presentation of theories he claimed he borrowed from India, China, and Japan, and the presentation of the same theories in the sources he referenced. The present study delves into the circumstances and contexts of Cage’s Asian influences, specifically as related to Cage’s borrowings from the British-Ceylonese art historian and metaphysician Ananda K. Coomaraswamy. In addition, Cage’s friendship with the Jungian mythologist Joseph Campbell is detailed, as are Cage’s borrowings from the theories of Jung. Particular attention is paid to the conservative ideology integral to the theories of all three thinkers. After a new analysis of the life and work of Coomaraswamy, the investigation focuses on the metaphysics of Coomaraswamy’s philosophy of art. The phrase ‘art is the imitation of nature in her manner of operation’ opens the doors to a wide- ranging exploration of the mimesis of intelligible and sensible forms. Comparing Coomaraswamy’s ‘Traditional’ idealism to Cage’s radical epistemological realism demonstrates the extent of the lack of congruity between the two thinkers. In a second chapter on Coomaraswamy, the extent of the differences between Cage and Coomaraswamy are revealed through investigating their differing approaches to rasa , the Renaissance, tradition, ‘art and life’, and museums.

    chapter 17 Czech Language and Literature Peter Zusi Recent years have seen a certain tendency to refer to Kafka as a ‘Czech’ author – a curious designation for a writer whose literary works, without exception, are composed in German. As the preceding chapter describes, Kafka indeed lived most of his life in a city where Czech language and society gradually came to predominate over the German-speaking minor- ity, and Kafka – a native German-speaker – adapted deftly to this changing social landscape. Referring to Kafka as Czech, however, is inaccurate, explicable perhaps only as an attempt to counterbalance a contrasting simplification of his complicated biography: the marked tendency within Kafka scholarship to investigate his work exclusively in the context of German, Austrian or Prague-German literary history. The Czech socio-cultural impulses that surrounded Kafka in his native Prague have primarily figured in Kafka scholarship through sociological sketches portraying ethnic animosity, lack of communication and, at times, open violence between the two largest lin- guistic communities in the city. These historical realities have given rise to the persistent image of a ‘dividing wall’ between the Czech- and German- speaking inhabitants of Prague, with the two populations reading different newspapers, attending separate cultural institutions and congregating in segregated social venues. This image of mutual indifference or antagonism has often made the question of Kafka’s relation to Czech language and cul- ture appear peripheral. Yet confronting the perplexing blend of proximity and distance, famil- iarity and resentment which characterized inter-linguistic and inter- cultural contact in Kafka’s Prague is a necessary challenge.

    El llegat dels germans Grimm en el segle xxi: del paper a la pantalla Emili Samper Prunera Universitat Rovira i Virgili [email protected] Resum Les rondalles que els germans Grimm van recollir als Kinder- und Hausmärchen han traspassat la frontera del paper amb nombroses adaptacions literàries, cinema- togràfiques o televisives. La pel·lícula The brothers Grimm (2005), de Terry Gilli- am, i la primera temporada de la sèrie Grimm (2011-2012), de la cadena NBC, són dos mostres recents d’obres audiovisuals que han agafat les rondalles dels Grimm com a base per elaborar la seva ficció. En aquest article s’analitza el tractament de les rondalles que apareixen en totes dues obres (tenint en compte un precedent de 1962, The wonderful world of the Brothers Grimm), així com el rol que adopten els mateixos germans Grimm, que passen de creadors a convertir-se ells mateixos en personatges de ficció. Dorsey), 1840 - 1844. First Octavo Edition. A Very Good+ to Near Fine set in a solid contemporary binding. Dark brown, half-morocco over marbled boards, matching marbled end-papers and page edges. Pages measure 252 x 165 mm. A few of the inner hinges just starting to split, but bindings are generally holding well. Expert repairs to the inner hinges of volumes 6 and 7; front end paper of volume 7 cracked and secured. Light scattered foxing on some of the tissue guards and pages adjacent to the plates, although the plates themselves do not seem to be affected and are all in lovely shape. Complete with all 500 plates, each with its original tissue guard. Half-titles in volumes 2 - 7. List of subscribers moved forward in volume one, found at the end of the other volumes.
