Download Our 2018 Festival Program
The Artemis Women in Action Film Festival 2018 Welcome to The Artemis Women in Action Film Festival! Our team is incredibly proud to offer the fourth edition of a singular and very special event - one dedicated to female action and empowerment heroes. This has been one truly groundbreaking year: We've seen a female superhero shatter records at the box office, the first women join the elite Rangers in the US Army, women speaking out about pressing issues, and so much more. An incredible year to be sure. The festival continues to grow – this year we received more submissions, have more screens and additional panel discussions, and just generally more kick-ass women. If you love movies, we have a great weekend for you! Our festival this year includes a stellar array of over 75 films: Shorts and feature length films, fiction and documentaries, all covering a huge variety of subjects and genres, and all focusing on powerful women. Some use their fists while others use their minds to make the world a better place, and then they use all their resources to execute those strategies turning dreams into reality. The Artemis Awards Gala continues the tradition of recognizing the great talents that continue to revolutionize the female action genre: Michelle Rodriguez, Ming-Na Wen, Rosemary Rodriguez, TJ Scott, Dana DeLorenzo, Debbie Evans, Alicia Vela-Bailey, Kachina Dechert, Danielle Burgio, Heidi Pascoe, and Cassandra Ebner. They are badasses behind the screen and on it, warriors and heroes proving that women can do anything. Our enormous gratitude to the dedicated people who make this festival possible. -
'Jim Gaffigan Show' Treats Catholicism Seriously, but in a Funny
‘Jim Gaffigan Show’ treats Catholicism seriously, but in a funny way By Maria Macina and John Mulderig Catholic News Service NEW YORK – Faith and comedy can make for an uncomfortable combination. Wits who engage in this volatile mix obviously need to avoid outright irreverence or the trivialization of the sacred. Yet they also have to be wary of artificial restraint since all genuine humor depends, to some degree at least, on a sense of realism and recognition. So plaudits are due to the folks behind the new TV Land program “The Jim Gaffigan Show.” Remarkably, they’ve managed to strike just the right balance between the weighty topic of religious devotion and the comically challenging situations to which the exercise of Catholic piety can all too often lead in today’s mixed-up world. The single-camera series, which airs 10-10:30 p.m. EDT on Wednesdays, stars the stand-up comedian of the title playing a fictionalized version of himself. Taking its lead from Gaffigan’s popular fact-based routine, the show finds his alter ego sharing a two-bedroom apartment in New York City with his wife, Jeannie (Ashley Williams), and their five young children. Written and executive produced by Gaffigan in collaboration with the real Jeannie, the program portrays the ongoing juggling act the screen couple must engage in to meet the competing demands of family, faith and Jim’s professional life as an entertainer. Jim’s outsized love of food is another recurring theme and source of laughs. Episodes often feature surprise guest appearances by the likes of Chris Rock, Macaulay Culkin and Janeane Garofalo. -

Theatre Arts and Performance Studies Box 1897 83 Waterman Street Providence, RI 02912 401 -863-3283 Fax 401-863-7529 PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies (TAPS), Brown University 83 Waterman Street, Providence, RI 02912 Contact: Paul Margrave, Marketing Coordinator (401) 863-2730 / [email protected] / writingislive.com / brown.edu/theatre Monday, May 1, 2017 Brown University Writing for Performance Program Showcase Hits New York PROVIDENCE, RI — The Brown University Writing for Performance program introduced the class of 2017 to the New York performance scene last week as part of a new week-long playwriting residency developed in partnership with The Flea Theater, New York (Artistic Director, Niegel Smith). In their third year at Brown, Writing for Performance students take up the third phase of their annual practicum. Action follows Articulation (first year, where writers engage with notation) and Atelier (second year, where the focus is on initial moves from text into live time and space through a rehearsal process). In Action, students build community, looking to develop conversations with a wider circle of collaborators over a longer period of time and by a range of means including readings, consultations, and an intensive workshop period. As a culmination of their three years in the program, the writers are asked to take their biggest textual risks, pressing at and beyond the most hopeful limit of what they know and believe their words can do. This year for the first time, the Brown University Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies has developed a fully reciprocal relationship with The Flea Theater in New York. -
