NAVCHOO Department of Botany University of Kashmir Srinagar 190006 India ABSTRACf.-This paper puts on record the ethnobotanical information of some plants used by inhabitants of Ladakh (India) for medicine, A comparison of the uses of these plants in Ladakh and other parts of India reveal that 21 species have varied uses while 19 species are not reported used. INTRODUCTION Ladakh (elev. 3000-59G(}m), the northernmost part of India is one of the most elevated regions of the world with habitation up to 55(}(}m. The general aspect is of barren topography. The climate is extremely dry with scanty rainfall and very little snowfall (Kachroo et al. 1976). The region is traditionally rich in ethnic folklore and has a distinct culture as yet undisturbed by external influences. The majority of the population is Buddhist and follow their own system of medicine, which has been in vogue for centuries and is extensively practiced. It offers interesting insight into an ancient medical profession. The system of medicine is the"Amchi system" (Tibetan system) and the practi­ tioner, an"Amchi." The system has something in common with the "Unani" (Greek) and"Ayurvedic" (Indian) system of medicine. Unani is the traditional system which originated in the middle east and was followed and developed in the Muslim world; whereas the Ayurvedic system is that followed by Hindus since Rig vedic times. Both are still practiced in India. Though all the three systems make USe of herbs (fresh and dry), minerals, animal products, etc., the Amchi system, having evolved in its special environment, has its own characteristics.

Sirsir La, at 4,828m, is a few metres higher than Europe’s Mont Blanc, and I was just over half way up the continuous 1,670m ascent to get there. This physiological response may have been a reality check, but it was no surprise. The ride to the remote village of Photoksar on the third day of my altitude cycling expedition in the Indian Himalaya had always loomed as an enormous challenge, and I was not yet fully acclimatised. I drew on experience to pace myself: keeping the pedals spinning in a low gear, trying to relax as much as possible and avoiding unnecessary exertion.

    AAC Publications Palzampiu Valley, Likir (5,619m GPS), east flank; Nia (5,681m GPS) west ridge India, Ladakh In August I traveled to Ladakh and climbed two previously virgin peaks on the southern rim of the Palzampiu Valley. My goal had been to reach the restricted area of the Siachen Glacier, but all expeditions, including one from the Indian Air Force, were denied a permit. Two of my team members then pulled out, leaving me to set off alone. On arrival in Leh, Rimo Expeditions provided me with a climbing partner, Thinles, and cook Dawa. We started our approach on August 30, crossing the Lasirmu La (5,550m) to the Thanglasgo Valley. We descended this north to the confluence with the Palzampiu at Wachan, then walked southwest up the Palzampiu. After seven days’ trekking we established a base camp at 5,086m. On September 6 we set off at 3:40 a.m. and reached the glacier from the north. Working west up gentle slopes (PD), we reached the first summit, Likir Peak (34°22.717'N; 77°17.268'E), at 6:40 a.m. We named it after the pass to the southwest, Likir La (ca 5,560m). One hour later we had traversed the ridge to our second summit, Nia Peak (34°22.377'N; 77°17.747'E). This was also named after a nearby pass, the Nia La (ca 5,400m), located to the northeast. We reversed the ridge toward Likir Peak to descend. With a little time to spare, we relocated to the Markha Valley and climbed Kang Yatse West (6,200m) before making it back to Leh on the 14th for beers and curry.

One third of the lake is in India while the remaining two thirds lies in Tibet, which is controlled by China. Majority of the streams which fill the lake are located on the Tibetan side. Pangong Tso is about five hours drive from Leh in Ladakh region of Jammu & Kashmir. The route passes through beautiful Ladakh countryside, over Chang La, the third highest motorable mountain pass (5289 m) in the world. The first glimpse of the serene, bright blue waters and rocky lakeshore remains etched in the memory of tourists. There is a narrow ramp- like formation of land running into the lake which is also a favorite with tourists. During winter the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water. The salt water lake does not support vegetation or aquatic life except for some small crustaceans. However, there are lots of water birds. The lake acts as an important breeding ground for a large variety of migratory birds like Brahmani Ducks, are black necked cranes and Seagulls. One can also spot Ladakhi Marmots, the rodent-like creatures which can grow up to the size of a small dog.

SNOW LEOPARD SPECIAL: LADAKH 1 – 14/17 MARCH 2017 LEADERS: MIKE WATSON & JIGMET DADUL. 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Snow Leopard Special: Ladakh 2017 www.birdquest-tours.com Snow Leopard guarding its Blue Sheep kill in Hemis NP (Mike Watson). Our ffth visit to the mountains of Ladakh in search of Snow Leopards was another success and resulted in two sightings, involving maybe two different cats, however, the second of these was certainly our most prolonged close range encounter so far involving a leopard at its Blue Sheep kill over the course of three days! Many thousands of images later we felt we could hardly better it so we did not spend quite as much time scanning as usual and looked for other animals instead. This resulted in a longer bird and mammal list than last time when we spend many more hours at vantage points. Other mammalian highlights included: two sightings of Grey (or Tibetan) Wolf; Siberian Ibex; Urial, Ladakh’s endemic ‘red sheep’; any amount of Blue Sheep (or Bharal), the Snow Leopard’s favourite prey, as well as other hardy alpine inhabitants such as Woolly Hare, Mountain Weasel and (Tibetan) Red Fox. The Tibetan Plateau Extension added Argali (the world’s largest sheep) and Kiang (Tibetan Wild Ass). Billed as a joint Birdquest/Wild Images tour, our birders were happy with a good selection of old favourite Himalayan specialities including: Himalayan Snowcock, Lammergeier, Himalayan Griffon Vulture, Golden Ea- gle, Ibisbill, Solitary Snipe (three plus another while acclimatizing pre-tour), Hill and Snow Pigeons, Eurasian Eagle Owl, Red-billed and Alpine Choughs, White-browed Tit-Warbler (six), Wallcreeper, Güldenstädt’s Red- start, Brown Dipper, Robin and Brown Accentors, Brandt’s Mountain Finch, Streaked and Great Rosefnches, Twite and Red-fronted Serin on the main tour.

Flug mit AUA Boeing 767 der sehr angenehm und kurzweilig ist. De Ankunft am International Airport Indira Gandhi erfolgt pünktlich um 00:05 und damit sind wir schon beim nächsten Tag. Tag 2 – So. 09. Aug Wir treffen Yvo und sind auf die Suche nach einem funktionierenden ATM da ich unvorsichtigerweise nicht vorab entsprechende Menge an Rupien im Gepäck habe. Durch einen technischen Defekt sind alle 6 ATMs des Airports Out of Order, also wechsle ich einmal 200 EUR. Mit dem Shuttle Bus wechseln wir zum Domestic Airport wo wir auch Sukhjit und Ganesh (Gini) treffen. Bei Aufgabe des Gepäcks wird Goli einmal ein wenig Geld für 6kg Übergepäck abgeknöpft da auf domestic Flights unterschiedliche Gewichtsbeschränkungen bestehen. Ich bin mit meinen 13,5 kg fein raus. Der Flug nach Leh ist angenehm und ich habe sogar 30 Minuten gedöst. Der Anflug auf den Militärflughafen von Leh über die Berggipfel ist beeindruckend aber sicher nix für Flugangstneurotiker.
