Lakey Peterson Lakey Peterson February 06, 2020 The daughter of a national swimming champion, Lakey Peterson was nicknamed “Lakey Surf Legend” at the age of five and, by 11 years old, was surfing competitively. She began winning National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) titles at 12 years old and at age 14, she became the first female to complete an aerial maneuver in competition. In 2011, Peterson competed as a wildcard in her first World Tour event, the U.S. Open of Surfing, where she placed runner-up. She went on to win every event in the North American Junior Pro Series that same year, securing an official spot on the 2012 World Surf League Women’s Championship Tour. Now in her seventh year on the Championship Tour, Peterson looks to improve on a career-best runner-up finish in the standings after winning two Championship Tour events in 2018. In addition to surfing, she is a committed philanthropist, working with several non-profits for the greater good of humanity and the environment. She also puts on a yearly surf contest for kids in her hometown of Santa Barbara, California. Away from competition, Peterson was featured in the Nike 6.0 women’s surf film “Leave A Message” and her first feature length film, “Zero to 100”, which chronicled her professional and personal journey and premiered in 2013. In 2019, Peterson married Thomas Allen, a Qualifying Series surfer from Australia. Sport: Surfing Currently Resides: Carpinteria, Calif. Professional female surfers, in particular, are drawing greater media attention than ever before and are seen by surf companies as the perfect vehicle to develop this global industry further. Because lifestyle branding has been developed as a modern marketing strategy, this thesis examines the lifestyle marketing practices of the three major surfing companies Billabong, Rip Curl and Quicksilver/Roxy through an investigation of the sponsorship experiences of fifteen sponsored female surfers. The research paradigm guiding this study is an interpretive approach that applies Doris Lessing’s (1991) concept of conformity and Michel Foucault’s (1979) notion of surveillance and the technologies of the self. An ethnographic approach was utilised to examine the main research purpose, namely to: determine the impact of lifestyle marketing by Billabong, Rip Curl and Quicksilver/Roxy on sponsored female surfers.
