What A week FLEW OUT with Air NZ in time to go the Dally M Awards – where the best of the INRL season is celebrated. It should have been renamed the Jonathan Thurston Show, and you can underline how good he really is after that final. I owe a special vote of thanks to Vodafone Warriors CEO Jim Doyle and NRL boss Dave Smith, for organis- ing the treatment I received. It was terrific to catch up with all the Kiwis in the NRL, and men like Cameron Smith and Billy Slater from the Storm. Well Done THe Menzies Hotel Not surprisingly, I had a huge amount of work to do ahead of the 2005 Kiwis Reunion and fair play to the Menzies Hotel. They could not do enough for me. I totally recommend the place, the staff were awesome, nothing was too much trouble- and I am the first to admit I can be a bit demanding – but they totally got how important it was to me, and were right into having the Kiwis as guests. Grand Final Lunch Date I had the superb Carbine Club Grand Final lunch on Thursday, another chance to meet some of the good people I’ve been lucky enough to know through league. I was especially pleased to be there for two men I greatly admire, and who have both been huge servants of the Vodafone Warriors.

INTERNATIONAL RUGBY LEAGUE AUSTRALIAN RUGBY LEAGUE TEST MATCHES IN BRISBANE Brisbane first hosted a test match at the Exhibition Ground in 1908 against New Zealand on their All Golds tour with Australia losing 24-12 in front of 6 000 people which helped to kick start the new code in Queensland. The “Ekka” ground would host 6 tests up to 1928 before the switch to the “Gabba” which hosted 9 tests until 1951 when Australia won the only test of the famous 1951 series against France. The “Ekka” then hosted another 4 tests up to 1960 before the complete switch to Lang Park. Up to this point Australia won almost as many games as they lost in Brisbane even against the dominant Great Britain side. The biggest crowd for an “Ekka” test was 39 200 in 1928 and 46 355 in 1954 at the Gabba. Australia’s biggest win was 56-6 against France in 1960. MPs Saleh Ashour, Mohammad Al-Hadiya, Saadoun Hammad and Saif Al-Azemi also called on the government to issue an official statement over the report which was published in the Arabic press to clarify its position towards the report. The opposition to the reported decision has so far come mainly from pro-government MPs which means that the gov- ernment is expected to have tough time passing such austeri- ty measures through the National Assembly. MP Ashour said in a statement that the government cannot legally increase prices of public services because the National Assembly issued a law in 1992 banning such a measure without the pri- or approval of the National Assembly. MP Hammad said the National Assembly will not accept any plan to lift subsidies on public services because this will greatly harm low and middle-income families. MP Hadiya said that the planned raise of electricity from two fils a kilowatt to seven fils and petrol from 60 fils a liter to 110 fils as stated in the report is “a crime against citizen consumers who include many low income families”.

Bennett calls for bad boy body: Wayne Bennett, one of the most respected figures in rugby league, has broken his silence over the recent spate of off-field incidents and called for the game to tackle the issue the same way it did with drugs and on-field violence, by appointing an independent body to sit in judgment of players. Bennett insisted alcohol abuse was not as bad among today's players as in the past, but said they were under more scrutiny now and the negative publicity was bad for the code.
