From 14 – 17 March at the Esplanade Theatre, SDT will mesmerise audiences with this charming and sentimental tale of adventure, mistaken identity and a beautiful life-sized doll. A new staging by Artistic Director Janek Schergen, featuring original choreography by Arthur Saint-Leon, Coppélia is set to a ballet libretto by Charles Nuittier, with music by Léo Delibes. Based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffman, this three-act ballet tells the light-hearted story of the mysterious Dr Coppélius who owns a beautiful life-sized puppet, Coppélia. A village youth named Franz, betrothed to the beautiful Swanilda becomes infatuated with Coppélia, not knowing that she just a doll. The magic and fun begins when Coppélia springs to life! Coppélia is one of the most performed and favourite full-length classical ballets from SDT’s repertoire. This colourful ballet was first performed by SDT in 1995 with staging by Colin Peasley of The Australian Ballet. Following this, the production was revived again in 1997, 2001 and 2007. This year, Artistic Director Janek Schergen will be bringing this ballet back to life with a new staging.

    American Modern Ensemble at National Sawdust on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at 7:00 pm: “Lingua Franca,” A Program of Recent and Brand New Music About Mangled Text, ICU Sounds, Rising, Falling, and Clashing Cultures Guest Ensemble: SYBARITE5 Message on chopstick wrapper in David Feurzeig’s Lingua Franca AME pianist Blair McMillen (photo by Bob London), SYBARITE5 The third definition of the phrase “lingua franca” in the Merriam Webster dictionary is: “something resembling a common language.” Lingua Franca is the name of a work by David Feurzeig that titles American Modern Ensemble’s November 1 concert at Brooklyn’s National Sawdust – describing a program that also includes a diversity of recent and new works by three winners of AME’s 10th Annual Composition Competition – Pierce Gradone, Texu Kim, and Aaron Mencher – and AME founder Robert Paterson: • David Feurzeig’s Lingua Franca (2014, New York premiere) for cello and bass, five settings of “unedited texts from around the world, composed in appreciation of the range of global English expression” which are also recited by the players • Pierce Gradone’s The Art of Falling (2011) for solo piano American Modern Ensemble’s Lingua Franca, November 1, 2017, at National Sawdust - Page 2 of 4 • Texu Kim’s Co.Ko. – un poco Loco (2017) for solo piano, “a 10-minute musical essay in three movements, reflecting contemporary Korea, where its own traditions and Western influences mingle in a slightly crazy way” • Aaron Mencher’s Rise (2016) for solo cello, evoking its title both figuratively and literally • Robert Paterson’s Ouvir Estrelas (2017, world premiere), a song setting of a poem in Portuguese by Brazilian Parnassian poet Olavo Bilac • Robert Paterson’s I See You, the New York premiere of a version for string quintet and recording of this 2016 work, originally scored for string orchestra and recording, inspired by a week the composer spent by his father’s bedside in the ICU The acclaimed string quintet SYBARITE5, the program’s guest ensemble, will perform I See You.

Bolender spent the final third of his 70-year career in Kansas City, as Artistic Director of the Kansas City Ballet 1981-1995 (Missouri State Ballet 1986- 2000) and Director Emeritus, 1996-2006. Bolender’s records constitute the first processed collection of the Kansas City Ballet Archives. The collection spans Bolender’s lifetime with the bulk of records dating after 1960. Stravinsky is one of the most important neo-classical composers of the twentieth century. The purpose of this document is to examine how Stravinsky upholds his neoclassical aesthetic in his violin writing through his two pieces, Suite italienne and Duo Concertant. In these works, Stravinsky’s use of neoclassicism is revealed in two opposite ways. In Suite Italienne, Stravinsky based the composition upon actual music from the eighteenth century. In Duo Concertant, Stravinsky followed the stylistic features of the eighteenth century without parodying actual music from that era.     Author David Hajdu Makes Songwriter Debut With Waiting for the Angel, ​ Culminating A 5-Year Collaboration with Esteemed Multi-Genre Composers Jill Sobule, Fred Hersch, Renee Rosnes & Michael “Mickey” Leonard Out August 28th on Miranda Music Album Features Top-Call Vocalists & Musicians Including Jo Lawry, Karen Oberlin, Michael Winther, Steve Wilson, Steven Bernstein, Charles Pillow, Peter Bernstein, Dave Eggar, Sean Smith & Carl Allen After years of writing about songs in books and essays, David Hajdu has taken up writing them. Over the past five years, Hajdu has been working with several esteemed composers of jazz, pop and theater music: the pianists Renee Rosnes and Fred Hersch, the alternative-folk singer-songwriter Jill Sobule, and the veteran Broadway composer Michael (Mickey) Leonard. The result is Waiting for the Angel, a collection of quirkily artful songs that defy easy ​ ​ categorization. The album will be released by Miranda Music as a CD and digital download, with a bonus track, on August 28. An all-star group of artists came together to record the material: singers Jo Lawry, Karen Oberlin, and Michael Winther; pianists Rosnes and Hersch, playing the songs they composed; additional pianist Tedd Firth; and a band with saxophonist Steve Wilson, trumpeter Steven Bernstein, guitarist Peter Bernstein; oboist Charles Pillow, cellist Dave Eggar, bassist Sean Smith, and drummer Carl Allen. Much like Hajdu's writing in prose, the lyrics on Waiting for the Angel tell unexpected tales ​ ​ from unconventional vantage points. "David Hajdu's lyrics tell complex and moving stories -- always from his unique point of view," says Fred Hersch. "They are so easy to work with, the songs almost write themselves." Jill Sobule adds, "I wish I wrote those lyrics myself." As Renee Rosnes says, "When David first ​ asked if I might be interest to write some songs together, I was very intrigued.
