i TEAM JAPAN: THEMES OF ‘JAPANESENESS’ IN MASS MEDIA SPORTS NARRATIVES A Dissertation submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Michael Plugh July 2015 Examining Committee Members: Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Doctoral Program Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Doctoral Program John Campbell, Media and Communication Doctoral Program Lance Strate, External Member, Fordham University ii © Copyright 2015 by MichaelPlugh All Rights Reserved iii Abstract This dissertation concerns the reproduction and negotiation of Japanese national identity at the intersection between sports, media, and globalization. The research includes the analysis of newspaper coverage of the most significant sporting events in recent Japanese history, including the 2014 Koshien National High School Baseball Championships, the awarding of the People’s Honor Award, the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, wrestler Hakuho’s record breaking victories in the sumo ring, and the bidding process for the 2020 Olympic Games. 2054 Japanese language articles were examined by thematic analysis in order to identify the extent to which established themes of “Japaneseness” were reproduced or renegotiated in the coverage. The research contributes to a broader understanding of national identity negotiation by illustrating the manner in which established symbolic boundaries are reproduced in service of the nation, particularly via mass media. Furthermore, the manner in which change is negotiated through processes of assimilation and rejection was considered through the lens of hybridity theory. iv To my wife, Ari, and my children, Hiroto and Mia. Your love sustained me throughout this process.

  • Cinematic Ghosts: Haunting and Spectrality from Silent Cinema to the Digital Era
Cinematic Ghosts: Haunting and Spectrality from Silent Cinema to the Digital Era. Edited by Murray Leeder. Bloomsbury Academic, 2015 (307 pages). Anton Karl Kozlovic Murray Leeder’s exciting new book sits comfortably alongside The Haunted Screen: Ghosts in Literature & Film (Kovacs), Ghost Images: Cinema of the Afterlife (Ruffles), Dark Places: The Haunted House in Film (Curtis), Popular Ghosts: The Haunted Spaces of Everyday Culture (Blanco and Peeren), The Spectralities Reader: Ghost and Haunting in Contemporary Cultural Theory (Blanco and Peeren), The Ghostly and the Ghosted in Literature and Film: Spectral Identities (Kröger and Anderson), and The Spectral Metaphor: Living Ghosts and the Agency of Invisibility (Peeren) amongst others. Within his Introduction Leeder claims that “[g]hosts have been with cinema since its first days” (4), that “cinematic double exposures, [were] the first conventional strategy for displaying ghosts on screen” (5), and that “[c]inema does not need to depict ghosts to be ghostly and haunted” (3). However, despite the above-listed texts and his own reference list (9–10), Leeder somewhat surprisingly goes on to claim that “this volume marks the first collection of essays specifically about cinematic ghosts” (9), and that the “principal focus here is on films featuring ‘non-figurative ghosts’—that is, ghosts supposed, at least diegetically, to be ‘real’— in contrast to ‘figurative ghosts’” (10). In what follows, his collection of fifteen essays is divided across three main parts chronologically examining the phenomenon. Part One of the book is devoted to the ghosts of precinema and silent cinema. In Chapter One, “Phantom Images and Modern Manifestations: Spirit Photography, Magic Theater, Trick Films, and Photography’s Uncanny”, Tom Gunning links “Freud’s uncanny, the hope to use modern technology to overcoming [sic] death or contact the afterlife, and the technologies and practices that led to cinema” (10).

We love all the marathons of all the scary movies. We will watch them all and scare ourselves to the point where we can't go to sleep. Zakiya: Yeah. You gotta watch them back to back. To back to back. You don't let the scariness die down. You gotta keep a high level of... Titi: Exactly. Zakiya: ...Anxiety. Titi: You watch six scary movies back to back and then a Cheerios commercial come on, you still gonna be shook by that Cheerios commercial. That's the type of scared we want to be. Zakiya: "What was that behind her?"... "It's just milk!". Titi: Those honey nut O's. I don't know. www.dopelabspodcast.com Titi: I'm Titi. Zakiya: And I'm Zakiya. Titi: And from Spotify studio. Vol. LXXXXVIII Jonathan Dayton High School May 2021 May 2021 Edition EDITORIAL BOARD Brielle & Nicole Ramundo Ms. Rooney-Kuhn Sarah Zarember Editors in Chief Advisor Opinions Editor EDITORIAL BOARD OPINION This year has definitely been challenging for the students at Jonathan Dayton. The new virtual setting has impacted everyone’s lives and schedules, and it can be hard to find the light in this dark situation. Not being able to have the normal high school experience for almost two school years is something that the students at Dayton never imagined. However, despite the current circumstances, it is imperative that we remember to make the best out of this situation, and to continue to look forward to the improvements the future is sure to hold. Just because we are interacting with teachers and classmates through a computer screen does not mean new goals cannot be achieved and memories cannot be made. If we look to the bright side of this situation and remain calm, patient, and hopeful, we will be back through Dayton’s doors very soon. Kinane joked that he thinks "the only people who believe in poltergeists are people who don't have any real-world problems," and following that statement, he states that believing in ghosts and engaging in paranormal culture is stereotypically "white" (0:39-1:20). The parallel drawn between daily life andthe topic of race is referredto as privilege, and Kinane insinuates that white privilege leaves an individual with a significant amount of free time and resources to engage in seemingly illogical beliefs, such as ghosts; however, ghost hunting reality television lends itself to more thanboredom, as it is a new and exciting genre specific to the 21st century. In this thesis, ghost hunting reality television is explored and recognized as a cultural artifact. Born from the combination of secular methodology, religion, and technology, an unlikely and obscure genre explodes from obscurity to popular culture to such a degree that tier one celebrities, such as Post Malone, guest star on longstanding ghost hunting reality show Ghost Adventures (2008-present).
