Dues are $20 per year for an individual or family. The Longhunter is included with membership. Membership is valid from 1 January to 31 December. Meetings The SKGS meets regularly at 6:30pm on the third Monday of the month at the Kentucky Library, Western Kentucky University. These meetings provide time for the exchange of ideas, discussion of research methods, organization of data, and techniques for preservation of documents, as well as the study of historical events that affected the lives and movements of our ancestors. A cordial welcome is extended to all visitors and prospective members. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience and understanding as a new issue of "The Longhunter" fi nally comes off th e press! Efforts are now underway to ensure that the next edition will not be so long in coming. A new editorial commjttee has been organized to set forth some structure and guidelines to facilitate the preparation and publication of "The Longhunter." Both the membership and the officers of the Southern Kentucky Genealogical Society believe that the journal can be revitalized and look forward to providing a better periodical. This will take the issue index through the year 2012. Th e Longhunter accepts letters, Family Bible transcriptions, Family stories, and Abstracts & Transcriptions of all records from All en, Barren , Bu tl er, Edmonson, Hart, Logan, Simpson, and Warren counties. If you have a Family Bible with birth, marriage and death dates please let me know. I will be happy to transcribe it for the Journal. This is one way to preserve family history. They have moved to FindMyPast.com Ie,.;,/. >tate, Editor The longhunter, Volume XXXVIII - Iss ues 1 & 2 A History of the Little Muddy Creek Valley (Butler County, Kentucky) Written by Roger Grady Givens of Green River Ramblins Publishing Co. Roger G. Givens is an amateur historian and former co-publisher of the Butler County Banner newspaper, where he wrote weekly articles about Butler County's historical events, people and places. He wrote a feature article about Butler County for the magazine Back Home in Kentucky. He is co-author along with Nancy Richey of Images of America, Butler County by Arcadia Publishing. Givens' current book is, African American Life in Butler County, Kentucky - Black Culture, Contributions, and Community. Givens has given several talks about the Civil War in Butler County and wrote a 200th Anniversary saga and historical booklet of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Butler County. He is retired but stays active serving on the Morgantown/Butler County Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors, Green River Museum, Board of Directors, Kentucky Historical Highway Marker, county chairperson and is Vice President of the Charles Duncan Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution in Bowling Green. The Little Muddy Creek Valley was among the first areas to be settled in what would later become Butler County, Kentucky in 1810. Settlement of this area of Logan County began around 1800 with the Borah, Carson, Ewing, Hay, Helm, Kuykendall, and Porter families. The Carson, Helm, Kuykendall and Porter families were the more prominent in the area. Five of these families: - Borah, Carson, Hay, Helm, and Kuykendall - had at least one known Revolutionary War veteran in each while the Porter fam ily had four veterans
