The end-points are chosen because mathematical work started to appear regularly in 1883 and 1933 saw the formation of the Industrial and Agricultural Research Section– to promote these particular applications was to encourage mathematical methods. In the period three movements are distinguished, associated with major figures in the history of mathematical statistics–F. Y. Edgeworth, Karl Pearson and R. A. Fisher. The first two movements were based on the conviction that the use of mathematical methods could transform the way the Society did its traditional work in economic/social statistics while the third movement was associated with an enlargement in the scope of statistics. The study tries to synthesise research based on the Society’s archives with research on the wider history of statistics. Key names : Arthur Bowley, F. Y. Edgeworth, R. A. Still, it takes ones breath when realizing the huge challenges ahead. Articles and Letters Statistics has not always been considered as being very necessary. In 1848 the Dutch On Bayesian Measures of Ministry of Home Affairs established an ofŮice of statistics. And then, thirty years later Uncertainty in Large or InŮinite minister Kappeyne van de Coppelo abolishes the “superŮluous” ofŮice. The ofŮice was Dimensional Models p. 4 quite rightly put back in place in 1899, as “Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek” (CBS). Among the IMS program highlights were the three Wald Lectures given by Emmanuel Candès, and the Blackwell 2–3 Members’ News: ASA Fellows; ICM speakers; David Allison; Lecture by Martin Wainwright—Xiao-Li Meng writes about how inspirational these Mike Cohen; David Cox lectures (among others) were, on page 10. Press release 13 August 2014 Two Fields Medals 2014 awarded to ERC laureates The 2014 Fields Medals were awarded today to four outstanding mathematicians, of whom two are grantees of the European Research Council (ERC): Prof. Artur Avila (Brazil-France), an ERC Starting grant holder since 2010, and Prof. Martin Hairer (Austria) has been selected for funding under an ERC Consolidator grant in 2013. They received the prize respectively for their work on dynamical systems and probability, and on stochastic analysis. The other two laureates are Prof. Manjul Barghava (Canada-US) and Prof. Maryam Mirzakhani (Iran). The Medals were announced at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) taking place from 13 – 21 August in Seoul, South Korea. On the occasion of the announcement, ERC President Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, a mathematician himself, said: “On behalf of the ERC Scientific Council, I would like to congratulate warmly all four Fields Medallists for their outstanding contributions to the field of mathematics. My special congratulations go to Artur Avila and Martin Hairer, who are both brilliant scientists supported by the ERC. We are happy to see that their remarkable talent in the endless frontiers of science has been recognised. The Fields Medals awarded today are also a sign that the ERC continues to identity and fund the most promising researchers across Europe; this is true not only in mathematics but in all scientific disciplines.” EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, said: “I would like to congratulate the four laureates of the Fields Medal announced today. The Random Matrix Technique of Ghosts and Shadows Alan Edelman November 22, 2009 Abstract We propose to abandon the notion that a random matrix has to be sampled for it to exist. Much of today's applied nite random matrix theory concerns real or complex random matrices (β = 1; 2). The threefold way so named by Dyson in 1962 [2] adds quaternions (β = 4). While it is true there are only three real division algebras (β=dimension over the reals), this mathematical fact while critical in some ways, in other ways is irrelevant and perhaps has been over interpreted over the decades. We introduce the notion of a ghost random matrix quantity that exists for every beta, and a shadow quantity which may be real or complex which allows for computation. Any number of computations have successfully given reasonable answers to date though diculties remain in some cases. Though it may seem absurd to have a three and a quarter dimensional or pi dimensional algebra, that is exactly what we propose and what we compute with. In the end β becomes a noisiness parameter rather than a dimension. 1 Introduction This conference article contains an idea which has become a technique. Perhaps it might be labeled a conjecture, but I think idea is the better label right now. The idea was discussed informally to a number of researchers and students at MIT for a number of years now, probably dating back to 2003 or so. It was also presented at a number of conferences [3] . As slides do not quite capture a talk, this seemed a good place to write down the ideas. -

And here are some potential reasons why. I often read R-bloggers (Galili, 2015) to see new and exciting things users are doing in the wonderful world of R. Recently I came across Norm Matloff’s (2014) blog post with the title “Why are we still teaching t-tests?” To be honest, many RSS personnel have echoed Norm’s sentiments over the years. There do seem to be some fields which are perpetually stuck in decades long past — in terms of the statistical methods they teach and use. Reading Norm’s post got me thinking it might be good to offer some explanations, or at least opinions, on why some fields tend to be stubbornly behind the analytic times. This month’s article will offer some of my own thoughts on the matter. I offer these opinions having been academically raised in one such Rip Van Winkle (Washington, 1819) field and subsequently realized how much of what I was taught has very little practical utility with real world research problems and data.
