    AMBIVALENCES AND ASYMMETRIES IN THE URBANIZATION PROCESS IN THE GULF OF MEXICO: ENVIRONMENTAL PRESSURES AND POPULATION CONCENTRATION Cuauhtémoc León and Hipólito Rodríguez FRAMEWORK: A DEFINITION OF THIS SPACE Three different countries surround this great marine water body; human activities both inland and in coastal zones and marine areas have modified, and will continue to modify this space’s biochemical, ecosystemic and, of course, socio-economic conditions. Such activities can be formally identified as the Gulf of Mexico’s economic and social space. From a historical perspective, they have had certain common traits and have perhaps been evolving at different intensities, but at least in a parallel fashion. The pace of changes has left marks shaping the landscape that can be “read,” yet unfortunately, in most instances these comprise an expansion and sequence of deleterious transformations. The boundaries of the Gulf of Mexico and, therefore, of what is considered to be its coastal zone, were defined a priori. Actually, they are of an operational nature so as to be able to deal simultaneously with three dimensions: the terrestrial landscape analyzed as ecoregions; socio-demographic dynamics studied on the basis of municipalities (or counties); and urban cores or cities, which enable us to easily visualize population concentration. Thus, the coastal zone was delimited as a mostly terrestrial strip having municipal boundaries (and therefore jurisdictional ones) and landscape features. As a result, this is not necessarily a region in the economic or geographic sense but rather, most likely, it is composed of asymmetrical, disconnected, and perhaps complementary territorial and political units which at most depend upon one another to a certain degree.

In 2009 it was positioned itself on the Cancun-Cozumel air bridge, with six daily ights on Dornier 228 aircraft that have a capacity for 19 passengers. It was then that the company began working together with Grupo Lomas Travel, a destination manager interested in providing the best experiences to those who visit Cancun and the Maya Riviera since 1981. The company’s eet is made up of four Dornier 228, three Fokker 50, a Cessna 206 and a 402. Currently, its routes are Cancun-Cozumel and Cancun-Mérida daily and Villahermosa-Mérida and Cancun-Chetumal from Monday to Saturday. For this year, the Villahermosa-Salina Cruz, Villahermosa-Veracruz, Veracruz-Poza Rica, Villahermosa-Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Toluca-Acapulco, Toluca-Bajío, Toluca-Morelia, Bajío-Monterrey and Morelia-Guadalajara routes were scheduled. The airline, chaired by Pablo González Ulloa, is the most important in Quintana Roo state and the one that leads the ights from the Mexican southeast. “With the Dornier we do short ights, lasting an hour on average, and the Cancun-Cozumel air bridge, three times a day in each direction,” said the director of the company, adding that “charter ights are also made, starting, generally, from Cancun to destinations like Chichen-Itza and Palenque”.

A LAS INSTITUCIONES DE CRÉDITO DEL PAÍS: Nos referimos a la Circular 2026/96, expedida por este Instituto Central el 1° de julio de 2005, relativa a las disposiciones de operaciones de caja. Sobre el particular, con fundamento en los artículos 2o., 3o., fracción I, 4o., 24 a 27, 37 y demás relativos de la Ley del Banco de México, 48 de la Ley de Instituciones de Crédito, 8o., 10, 16 bis, fracción II, y 28 del Reglamento Interior del Banco de México, así como Único del Acuerdo de Adscripción de sus Unidades Administrativas, nos permitimos comunicarles que debido a que el Banco de México ha dejado de ofrecer el servicio de corresponsalía de caja en la ciudad de Iguala, Guerrero, resolvió modificar los Anexos 2 y 22 de la citada Circular 2026/96. U.S. citizens have been the target of violent crimes, such as kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery by organized criminal groups in various Mexican states. For information on security conditions in specific regions of Mexico, which can vary, travelers should reference the state-by-state assessments further below. This Travel Warning replaces the Travel Warning for Mexico, issued January 9, 2014, to update information about the security situation and to advise the public of additional restrictions on the travel of U.S. government (USG) personnel. General Conditions: Millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year for study, tourism, and business, including more than 150,000 who cross the border every day. The Mexican government dedicates substantial resources to protect visitors to major tourist destinations, and there is no evidence that organized criminal groups have targeted U.S. visitors or residents based on their nationality. Resort areas and tourist destinations in Mexico generally do not see the levels of drug-related violence and crime that are reported in the border region or in areas along major trafficking routes. Nevertheless, U.S. travelers should be aware that the Mexican government has been engaged in an extensive effort to counter organized criminal groups that engage in narcotics trafficking and other unlawful activities throughout Mexico. The groups themselves are engaged in a violent struggle to control drug trafficking routes and other criminal activity.
