The pretty Northumbrian Village of Chatton is only 1½ miles to the North and has the popular Percy Arms Hotel and a village shop. Chillingham is equidistant between Alnmouth and Berwick train stations, on the main east coast line, both of which offer regular services to Edinburgh and London. The A1 trunk road is 7 miles to the east and Newcastle airport is 50 miles to the south. North Northumberland is arguably one of the most beautiful and unspoilt corners of England; as well as glorious scenery the area has a huge amount to offer in the way of lifestyle and culture. The magnificent east coast provides a mixture of sandy beaches, historic castles and the world class bird sanctuary of the Farne Islands. The rugged beauty of the Cheviot Hills and renowned River Tweed form a picturesque border with Scotland as well as offering wide open spaces within the National Park. The medieval market town of Alnwick with its cobbled streets, narrow alleys and fine stone buildings provides a wide range of specialist shops and family businesses along with restaurants, a theatre/cine ma and the now well-known Castle and Gardens. Newcastle upon Tyne is a vibrant centre of art and culture with the renowned Sage musical centre, theatres, art galleries, including the Baltic, and a dynamic city centre as well as the Quayside which hosts numerous international events throughout the year. There are several excellent links and inland golf courses nearby including Goswick, Belford and Bamburgh. Shooting is available locally with first class grouse shooting in the Lammermuirs and Cheviot Hills together with many organised pheasant and partridge shoots. Nearby the River Till, a tributary of the Tweed, provides productive salmon and trout fishing. High quality National Hunt Racing at Kelso and the local hunts include the West Percy, the Percy and the College Valley/North Northumberland. Good local state education is available in Wooler and Belford for first and middle schools with the Duchess High School in Alnwick. Well-respected private schools are nearby at St Oswalds in Alnwick and Longridge Towers near Berwick. DIRECTIONS From the north travelling on the A1 follow the by-pass around Berwick upon Tweed and continue south for 15 miles, turn west onto the B6349 signposted for Wooler and Chatton and continue into Chatton. Take the left hand turn sign posted for Chillingham Castle, continue for 1½ miles and turn left signed to Chillingham Cattle. The Estate House is on your left after approx 400 yards and just over the dry ford. From the south leave the A697 (3 miles north of Wooperton Sawmill) signposted Lilburn, take the first left over a bridge and after 300 metres turn right following brown signs for Chillingham Wild Cattle. After 1 mile turn right and after ¾ mile fork left and continue until the gates of Chillingham Castle are in front of you, turn left for Chillingham Village and once in the village continue as above. DESCRIPTION The Estate House is a substantial 18th Century Grade 2 Listed Country House of dressed sandstone under a Welsh slate roof and was originally the Dower House for the Earls of Tankerville from Chillingham Castle and lived in for many years by Violet Dowager Countess of Tankerville. The rooms are well proportioned and following a recent re-design the Estate House now provides excellent family accommodation in a wonderful setting. The house has been fully modernised in 2007 including a new central heating system and re-wired throughout. The property has many original features including ornate Flemish brick fireplaces and 17th Century oak panelling brought from Chillingham Castle, with carved figures of 16th Century King’s Heads above the fireplace. The accommodation is spacious and bright and makes for ideal, comfortable family living. The triple aspect drawing room has at its heart a Flemish brick open fireplace. The family room opens into a lovely bright and spacious kitchen with Aga and double doors to the front garden. The panelled dining room is a lovely cosy room for candlelit dinners. The first floor boasts 6 bedrooms (1 en-suite) and 2 family bathrooms. A door from the landing leads to the guest apartment which is on separate services and is ideal for staff or an overflow of family/guests and has a living room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. To the rear of the house are a useful range of stone built outhouses, one of which houses a brand new heating system and the others have many other different potential uses including office accommodation or additional storage. OUTSIDE The Estate House sits in a formal garden enclosed to the front and surrounded by traditional Yew hedges interspersed with specimen Rhododendrons and box hedging. To the west is the village green garden which is laid to lawn with a mixture of mature oak and fruit trees. There are two paddocks extending to 2.2 acres to the rear of the Estate House, ideal for horses/ponies or a small flock of sheep. There is a range of brick buildings including gardener’s stores and wooden garages which could be converted to stabling and tack rooms.
