The goal is to provide a deeper understanding of this rich image and its influence on the Gospel. In an attempt to do so, three areas of concentration are explored. First, the most common and accepted views of the background of the “Lamb of God” title in first century Judaism and Christianity are reviewed. -

Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha. They lived in the town of Bethany, which was about two miles away from Jerusalem. Mary and Martha sent a message to Jesus, likely expecting Him to come right away. Jesus loved Mary, Martha, and Lazarus; yet He stayed where He was, and Lazarus died. Why would Jesus do such a thing? Jesus said that Lazarus’ sickness was “for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it” (John 11:4). He said that He was glad He wasn’t there when Lazarus died so that the disciples may believe. (John 11:15) Jesus’ timing is always perfect, and He acts—or doesn’t act—so that God will be glorified. By the time Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. -

How much time had elapsed since the beginning of Jesus' ministry? About one year, as this is the second "Passover" (John 6:4) mentioned, so Jesus is one-third into His three-year ministry. This Passover is also six months after the previous "feast of the Jews" mentioned in John 5, which shows that the Gospel of John, like the other three Gospels, is not a diary. Each of the four Gospel writers described the highlights of Jesus' ministry as led by the Holy Spirit, so there are overlaps, & elements unique to each. Why did "a great multitude" (John 6:2) follow Jesus? Was Jesus' question, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” (John 6:5) to Philip intended to start a private chat? Since at least one other disciple, Andrew, also replied to the question, it was heard by more than just Philip, and probably all of the twelve disciples. -

We will focus mostly on those two statements, see how they are connected, and challenge the kids to know and believe in not just any Jesus, but the actual Jesus revealed in the Scriptures. Craft for 1st & 2nd: Light of the World Craft Starter Activity: Board Games All of the kids have played board games before. To get the lesson started ask the kids what their favorite board games are and why they like them. Consider sharing with them what some of your favorite board games were as a kid or are today if you still like them! Teachers: Consider bringing some of your games from home or pulling out some of the games from the classroom just to enhance the discussion. We will then shift the discussion to the “Guess Who” game which leads us into our study. Q: How many of you have ever played the game “Guess Who” before? Describe to me how that game works. * You win if you are the first to correctly identify the other character! The reason we are talking about this game is because in the last several chapters of John, we have seen the Jewish people, especially the Pharisees (the religious leaders of the day), playing a game with Jesus. -

John 13:1-15 “Jesus: Turning the World Upside-Down” Scripture: John 13:1-15 Memory Verse: Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Lesson Focus: This chapter of John we see how Jesus completely turns things upside- down from what is normal in our fallen world. In this part of the chapter, we will see how Jesus shocks everyone with His agape love. Activities and Crafts: Coloring Picture of Jesus Washing Feet Word Search of different terms from lesson, Bring It Home Discussion for 3rd – 5th. Craft for 1st & 2nd: Feet Starter Activity: The Worst Chores We’ve all got chores to do and some we like better than others. To introduce our lesson, have some discussion about the chores that you all like the best. Ask them why they like them! Mention some of your own that you had as a kid that you actually liked and why (or maybe some that you like doing now!). Below are some ideas: 1) Mowing the lawn (enjoyed using the lawn mower as a kid) 2) Washing the car (enjoyed playing with the water) 3) Raking the leaves (got to play in the piles afterwards) After having some good discussion on the chores that aren’t so bad then ask the kids what are some of the chores that they think are the worst and ask them why. Then share with them some of the chores that you like the least. -

IMMANUEL BAPTIST CHURCH SERIES: JOHN (GOSPEL OF TRUTH) LESSON: ON HAVING THE LIGHT OF LIFE JOHN 8:12-20 MAY 2, 2021 MAIN POINT Jesus Christ is the light of the world. Whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. JOHN CONTEXT Perhaps it is helpful to point out that we are skipping John 7:53-8:11 in our Sunday school curriculum. In fact, many of your Bible’s might have a footnote or parenthetical mark explaining that John 7:53-8:11 is a disputed passage for its authenticity. We won’t get into the reasons in this section of the lesson, but I have included in the commentary section a brief excerpt from an article by John Piper for reasons why scholars doubt its authenticity. Despite that we are skipping over John 7:53-8:11, John 8:12-20 still fits nicely into the context of the end of John 7. In the chapter, Jesus is in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Tabernacles or otherwise called, the Feast of Booths. On the final day of the feast, Jesus stood up and declared, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’” (7:37-38). Jesus’ use of the water analogy is a fitting one because the Feast of Tabernacles celebrated in part the event of Moses striking the rock and water coming forth. Similarly, Jesus in John 8:12 will refer to himself as the light of the world. -

1 “Encounters with Jesus: Healing of Man Born Blind” John 9:1-41 6/17/12 This morning we continue our series of encounters with Jesus. So far we’ve watched as Jesus interacted with a good religious man (Nicodemus), an adulterous woman, and a dejected disciple (Peter). I hope you are finding these encounters to be as challenging as I am! Today we look at the healing of a blind man, a story that has implications for both physical and spiritual blindness. It also says some important things about the dangers of organized religion. I’ve asked Mary Miner and Bonnie to help me with the reading of John 9. 1 As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" 3 Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God's works might be revealed in him. 6 When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man's eyes, 7 saying to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see. 8 The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, "Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?" 9 Some were saying, "It is he." Others were saying, "No, but it is someone like him." He kept saying, "I am the man." 2 10 But they kept asking him, "Then how were your eyes opened?" 11 He answered, "The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me, "Go to Siloam and wash.' Then I went and washed and received my sight." 12 They said to him, "Where is he?" He said, "I do not know." 13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. -

John 11:47-53 People of the Passion: Caiaphas, The Schemer Midweek Lenten Service #1 Ash Wednesday March 6, 2011 Then the chief priest and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What are we accomplishing?" they asked. "Here is this man performing many miraculous signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation." Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish." He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God. So from that day on they plotted to take his life. (NIV) As we begin our Lenten sermon series titled "People of the Passion" we're going to begin by looking at the person some might well argue is the greatest villain of the Passion History. But it's probably not who you think. It's not Judas, always listed last of the 12 disciples, often with an ominous explanatory note along the lines of "who betrayed him." It's not Pilate, who was everything a judge is not supposed to be. It's Caiaphas. It was Caiaphas who got this whole thing started. Without Caiaphas, Judas and Pilate would not have entered the picture. -

John 6.15-21 STUDY GUIDE
THE GOSPEL OF JOHN Small Group Discussion Guide Text: John 6:15-21 Theme/ Big Idea: Jesus is “I Am” who comes offering peace in the midst of chaos and life in the midst of death. Context/ Background Information: In John 6:1-14, Jesus miraculously provided bread in the wilderness. According to Matthew and Mark, “immediately after” feeding the 5,000 Jesus made the disciples get into a boat while he remained behind to disperse the crowds and pray (Matt 14:22-33; Mark 6:45-52). John 6:15 provides a likely motive for moving so quickly to send the disciples away. In verse 15, the crowds wanted to “take him by force and make him king.” Remarkably, Jesus’ actions reveal he is not interested in being the earthly king the people wanted nor was he interested in his disciples adopting the perspective of the crowd. Instead, we are told Jesus withdrew to the mountain by himself. Rather than fulfill their expectations and become the king they wanted, Jesus is concerned with being the king they desperately need. Think about it, if ever there was a time to fall in line with the expectations of the people and attempt to overthrow Rome, it was when 10 to 15,000 people were ready to make Jesus king. Yet Jesus resisted their expectations and withdrew. The reason, according to John 18:36, is because Jesus’ “kingdom is not of this world.” Rome is infinitely too small a throne for him. Jesus is the King of Kings, the Lord of Hosts and John captures that vividly in the miracle of Jesus walking on the water.
