Box 90153, NL-5000 LE Tilburg, The Netherlands; [email protected] Received: 2 October 2020; Accepted: 9 November 2020; Published: 13 November 2020 Abstract: The Passion is a contemporary performance of the passion of Christ live on stage, combined with pop music, city marketing, social media, and entertainment. The result is an encounter between the Christian gospel and traditional elements of devotion like a procession of the cross on the one hand, and the typical mediatization and commercialization of late modern society on the other. In this article, I will first briefly describe the phenomenon, including the different effects that the event has upon the audience and the stakeholders and benefits it has for them. It is one characteristic of The Passion that it allows for a variety of possible approaches, and this is, at the same time, part of its formula for success. Another characteristic is the configured intertextuality between the sacred biblical text and secular pop songs. In the second section, I will interpret this as a central mode of storytelling in The Passion. It can evoke traditional, but also new, interpretations of the Christian gospel. The purpose of the article is to interpret The Passion as an expression of constructive public theology. It is an example of how the gospel is brought into dialogue with secular society. In this part of the chapter, we will see how Jesus shocks everyone with His agape love. Craft for 1st & 2nd: Feet Starter Activity: The Worst Chores We’ve all got chores to do and some we like better than others. To introduce our lesson, have some discussion about the chores that you all like the best. Ask them why they like them! Mention some of your own that you had as a kid that you actually liked and why (or maybe some that you like doing now!). Below are some ideas: 1) Mowing the lawn (enjoyed using the lawn mower as a kid) 2) Washing the car (enjoyed playing with the water) 3) Raking the leaves (got to play in the piles afterwards) After having some good discussion on the chores that aren’t so bad then ask the kids what are some of the chores that they think are the worst and ask them why. Then share with them some of the chores that you like the least. -

John 11:47-53 People of the Passion: Caiaphas, The Schemer Midweek Lenten Service #1 Ash Wednesday March 6, 2011 Then the chief priest and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What are we accomplishing?" they asked. "Here is this man performing many miraculous signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation." Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish." He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God. So from that day on they plotted to take his life. (NIV) As we begin our Lenten sermon series titled "People of the Passion" we're going to begin by looking at the person some might well argue is the greatest villain of the Passion History. But it's probably not who you think. It's not Judas, always listed last of the 12 disciples, often with an ominous explanatory note along the lines of "who betrayed him." It's not Pilate, who was everything a judge is not supposed to be. It's Caiaphas. It was Caiaphas who got this whole thing started. Without Caiaphas, Judas and Pilate would not have entered the picture. -

Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." (9) "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!" (10) Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." New International Version Kenneth N. Taylor, in his Living Gospels: The Paraphrased Gospels, puts it this way: "Master, You shouldn't be washing our feet like this!" Christ responds, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this" (verse 7). Peter, still not convinced, flatly states, "You shall never wash my feet" (verse 8). Christ's next words, however, finally cause him to give in: "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." Jesus' response—whatever His tone of voice—struck the disciple squarely between the eyes: Peter's eternal life was on the line! This time, his response is quite different: "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!" (verse 9). This sounds a little like Psalm 51:2, where David prays, "Wash me thoroughly. -

HOW TO SAVE YOUR LIFE – JOHN 12:20-26 July 8 & 9, 2017 TEXT: John 12:19-26 MEMORY VERSE: John 12:25 I read about a chapel on the campus of Stony Brook School on Long IslanD which has part of our text engraveD which says, “Sir, we woulD see Jesus.” That is a gooD worD for any true believer anD shoulD be our aim every time we gather together to stuDy the Scriptures. Verses 20-23. In this context, I think we will see Jesus when we properly unDerstanD His answer. What we are looking at coulD have happeneD within a couple of Days after Jesus came to Jerusalem. JESUS’ HOUR HAD COME. This was the first part of Jesus’ reply. Several times earlier He had saiD that His hour had not yet come. We see an example of this in 2:4. Even though Jesus woulD supply 120 gallons of the best wine, He was saying that the hour of His crucifixion had not yet come. In other places, they coulD not seize Him because “His hour had not yet come” (7:30, 8:20). But now this suDDenly changes – the hour has come – Jesus says (verse 23). JESUS WAS TO BE GLORIFIED. Jesus’ glory woulD be seen in a much wiDer context – His glory consisteD in opening the Doors wiDer anD wiDer, so that people from every tribe anD tongue woulD be members of His spiritual family. There was another sense in which Jesus woulD be glorifieD anD that was by the cross. “The hour” of His Death, burial, anD resurrection was at hanD. -

Contemplation with Scripture: John 12:1-8 Mary of Bethany by Yvette Rock Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.” Contemplative Prayer with Scripture This contemplative exercise can be done with any Gospel story. It takes a little time, a quiet space for prayer, and your imagination. Introduction (1) Setting the scene: The place: the village of Bethany, the table, the people in the room (babies, children, women, the poor); step one (2) Make yourself comfortable; breathe deeply Prepare yourself for prayer. JOHN 12,20-22 AS A MISSIONARY TEXT: AN EXEGETICAL STUDY IN THE LIGHT OF ISAIAH 42B AND ISAIAH 52,15 LXX Dominic Obielosi Introduction John 12, 20-22 has no direct synoptic parallel. The small section is about Greeks coming to see Jesus. It affirms the universality of the mission of Christ for the salvation of all. In John’s Gospel economy, all are children of God. Salvation is for all. It is not a strict reserve of any. This introduction of the special visit by Greeks at the crucial moment in which Jesus seems to be ending his earthly ministry coupled with their insistence to see Jesus makes the whole episode theologically significant. The visit by the Greeks raises a lot of questions. In the first place, it seems to be lacking in connection with the sequence of the narrative in the rest of the chapter. It sounds like an intrusion. Again, it is apparently foreign to Jesus’ proclamation of the advent of his hour. It is the presupposition of this paper that an understanding of the theological significance of the episode resolves these apparent problems. The researcher believes that the text underscores the missionary task of the Messiah as a call to gather all nations to God and not just a nation. It echoes directly, the provision of Isa 42b and Isa 52,15LXX as one of the functional demands of the Messiah. It is therefore a missionary text detailing Jesus messianic fulfilment as getting beyond the confines of Palestine to reach the ends of the earth, including the gentile nations. -
