As those of you who receive our E-Mail Blasts or regularly check our web site are already aware, Great Day! Tours has not been “sitting idle”, as we gradually brought back our tours for those wanting to travel, starting last June and, by July, our annual tour to Mount Rushmore showed that there was much “pent-up” demand for travel. During September we introduced a dozen tours and most sold out within days. This 2021 Tour Book has more tours to choose from than ever before. • Wisconsin's Famous and Historic Trees R. Bruce Allison
Nature/Wisconsin History Allison “Each of us from birth to death is intimately connected with trees. On Every Root their beauty and longevity we hang our memories and beliefs, trusting an Anchor trees to be symbols of our achievements and the things we hold dear.” —from the Preface Wisconsin’s Famous and Historic Trees Ever A llison y Root an Anchor In Every Root an Anchor, writer and arborist R. Bruce Allison celebrates Wisconsin’s most significant, unusual, and historic trees. More than one hundred fascinating tales introduce us to trees in every corner of the state, some remarkable for their size or age, others for their intriguing histories. From magnificent elms to beloved pines, from hanging trees to surveyors’ witness trees, from Frank Lloyd Wright’s oaks to Ben Logan’s maple, these trees are woven into our social and emotional history, contributing indelibly to our sense of place. They are anchors for time-honored family and community customs, manifestations of our ideals, and reminders of our lives’ most significant events. For this updated edition, Allison revisits the trees’ histories and tells us which of these unique landmarks are still standing. He sets forth an environmental message as well, reminding us to recognize our undeniable connectedness to trees and to manage our tree resources wisely. As early Wisconsin conservationist Increase Lapham said, tree histories increase our love of home and improve our hearts. They deserve to be told and remembered. WHS R. THE ORIGINS OF SOME MADISON, WISCONSIN, STREET NAMES BURR ANGLE, DOLORES KESTER, AND ANN WAIDELICH COPYRIGHT © BURR ANGLE 2010 Burr Angle, Dolores Kester, and Ann Waidelich Copyright © Burr Angle 2010 “Many facts, minute in themselves, are in this view very important. The details, which is the appropriate province of the local historian to spread before the public are not so much history itself, as materials for history, leaving to the general historian, who has before him all these details, to exhibit the connection of the several parts, and their dependence one upon another.” Daniel S. Durrie A History of Madison, 1874 Burr Angle, Dolores Kester, and Ann Waidelich Copyright © Burr Angle 2010 Contents This document contains information on the origins of street names in several areas of Madison, Wisconsin. Part I is a short history of the Northside of Madison from the 1840s to the present as revealed by street naming practices. Part II presents more information about Northside street names. Part III explains how the Army changed the designations of streets at Truax Field from letters and numbers to “avenues of honor.” Part IV is a sidebar with sketches of several carpenters, contractors, and developers who helped build the Northside from the 1920s through the 1970s. Part V discusses and lists the names of Eastside streets between the Yahara River and Starkweather Creek. Part VI uses the same format as Part V to discuss the names of Westside streets from Wingra Park to Nakoma. Part VII is devoted to Westside areas north of the Beltline to about 1970. Part VIII returns to the Eastside with facts about streets from Starkweather Creek and Monona Drive to Interstate 90.
