1. SITUATION OVERVIEW

The North Lombok was hit by earthquakes of 6.4 & 7 Richter scale on July 29th and August 5th, 2018. This 7 RS earthquake was felt in Denpasar, , East Lombok, North Lombok, West Lombok, Central Lombok and West Sumbawa. The epicentre of this earthquake was at a depth of 10 km and located at 8o22’12.0” S & 116o28’48.00” E (inland) in the area of West Nusa Tenggara Province.

Based on the data from the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) on August 5th, the number of displaced persons are 270.168 people, the number of injured people 1.033, and the number of causalities 259 people. The magnitude of this quake destroyed not only houses and buildings, but also public facilities.

The IDPs are now stay in 121 shelters in different areas: 23 (Tunjungsari), 17 (Batulayar), 11 (Pemenang), 3 (Lingsar & Narmada), 35 (Gangga & Tanjung), 9 (Kayangan, Bayan & Sembalun), 17 (East Lombok) and 6 (Mataram).

2. CARITAS RESPONSE  After the 6.4 Richter scale earthquake hit Lombok on 29 July 2018, the Diocese of Denpasar has deployed its emergency response team to assist the people affected by the earthquake. A rapid need assessment was immediately done to determine type of interventions and services will be provided for the affected people. The Diocese of Denpasar Emergency Response Team (TTB-KD) is focusing their work in Torean sub village of Loloan village, North Lombok which was severely impacted. In their appeal to KARINA, the diocese emergency response team plans to provide hygiene kits for 188 households.  While distributing the food items on 7-10 August, TTB-KD also conducted rapid assessment after the 7 RS quake. TTB-KD was assisted by Interfaith Forum of West Nusa Tenggara Province to distribute 188 hygiene kits at Torean, Loloan Village, Bayan Sub-district at North Lombok.  PERDHAKI sent 6 doctors and 8 nurses to support the medical assistance at St. Antony Ampenan Catholic Hospital. Diocese of came to join the solidarity act by providing 150 tents, 600 sleeping mats, toiletries, etc.  On August 8th, the Director of KARINA, Fr. Antonius Banu K, went to Diocese of Denpasar to have a coordination meeting with the Vicariate General and TTB-KD. This accompaniment was meant to help the CI SITUATION REPORT SITREP 1

local diocese to set up the mechanism of emergency response and to fill the gaps. As a result, they now have a structure for emergency response and will be activated immediately.  On August 13th, 2 staffs of KARINA will be deployed to Lombok in order to follow up the result of coordination meeting and to strengthen the humanitarian services of the local diocese. 4 volunteers from Caritas Diocese of Tanjung Karang and Caritas Arch-Diocese of will join our staffs in Lombok to support the emergency response. They will help the TTB-KD to complete the hygiene kits’ distribution and also doing monitoring, rapid assessment of new area and developing new project.  The volunteers from diocese will also set up a media centre at the Parish of St. Maria Immaculate, Mataram, where they operate the emergency response.

3. COORDINATION  On Monday, August 13th, KARINA will do the coordination meeting to determine the next step of responding the needs of Denpasar Diocese.  The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has issued a statement that external assistance is still not needed since the national government still has the sufficient capacity in managing it.

4. MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS So far, KARINA has released 3 situation reports with the Humanitarian Forum of Indonesia. By next week, KARINA will release a single situation report regularly.

5. PLEDGES AND CONTRIBUTIONS KARINA has provided hygiene kits for 188 families from the Lenten campaign fund to assist the emergency response needs of the Denpasar Diocese.
