16 Sainik Samachar July 16-31, 2018 Anyone who aspires to become a seaman must begin by acquiring a first-hand knowledge of the wind and waves. It has long been recognised by the Indian Navy that – even in an age of technological complexity – sail training still provides the best possible foundation for a seaman. A sailing ship teaches trainees to work together as a team, and to take decisions under challenging and physically demanding circumstances. It provides an unparalleled opportunity for aspiring seagoing officers and men to develop and exhibit confidence, courage, and sound judgment; precisely the qualities that the Indian Navy needs. The Commanding Officer of Tarangini is privileged to be commanding a ship where he has been a sea trainee in his cadet’s time. ‘Sail Training International’ organises tall ship races and regattas, which promote international friendship and understanding between young sailors and the thousands of visitors. Sunderland, by virtue of its location and rich sailing culture, is aptly placed to host the tall ship races. When a sail training international event visits a host port, it is invariably a major attraction for visitors. Tall ship races and regattas bring together, not just thousands of visitors, but also hundreds of young participants from all backgrounds and nationalities. Each event generates keen competition and committed effort from the participants, while the visitors are also caught up in the excitement and atmosphere of the regatta. - PRO Navy
