Meet Lucy Pevensey Downland meadow

Interpretation area Nature trail Car park Banstead Woods and Chipstead Downs have a fascinating history. Alluded to in the Holly Lane car park, Domesday Book 1086, they have been owned by kings and queens of England and Holly Lane, Banstead, Knights of the Realm. CR5 3NR The site was recently designated a Local Nature Reserve by the Council for its ancient woodland, rare species and chalk grassland habitats, which are in significant decline nationally. This designation gives this landscape greater protection. Entrance Banstead Woods includes areas of medieval wood banks of ancient oak along with younger sessile oak, beech, sweet chestnut and veteran trees including hornbeam and historic hazel coppices. The chalk grassland includes the downland meadows of Stagbury Downs, home to a variety of wild flowers, including several rare orchid species. Much of the site is already a Site of Special Scientific Interest or Site of Nature Follow the way markers Conservation Importance.
