The primary teaching assignment will be to teach foundation courses in three- dimensional design, ceramics, sculpture and, depending on experience and qualifications, art history. The assigned teaching schedule may include evenings and weekends. Other related courses may be assigned as determined by the needs of the College and the qualifications and experiences of the selected candidate. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Provide class instruction of 14-16 lecture equivalent hours per week, in accordance with established course outlines and departmental procedures. • Assist the studio art and art history programs in identifying and addressing instructional needs • Communicate and work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Participate actively in all full-time faculty responsibilities, such as curriculum review and development, committee membership, and other duties as described in the Faculty Handbook and required by contract and district policy. • Develop and revise course materials as necessary to assure innovative and creative teaching and learning. • Maintain necessary attendance and evaluation records and submit them according to designated deadlines. • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with District Policy. • Demonstrate effectiveness in working with students from first-generation and/or historically under-represented groups as they pursue their academic goals. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Academic Qualifications: Master’s in fine arts, art, or art history OR Bachelor’ in any of the above AND Master’s in Humanities OR the equivalent. (NOTE: ‘’Master’s in fine arts” as used here refers to any master’s degree in the subject matter of fine arts, which is defined to include visual studio arts such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and metal and jewelry art; and also art education and art therapy. It does not refer to the “Master of Fine Arts” (MFA) degree when that degree is based on specialization in performing arts or dance, film, video, photography, creative writing or other non- plastic arts.) Foreign degrees must be evaluated by a recognized credential evaluation service, prior to submission. Individuals lacking the above degree-based academic qualifications, but who may have an equivalent background must submit either an Equivalency Form as part of their application package. Desirable Attributes and Experience: Possession of minimum qualifications in Art History: Master’s in art history, history of art and architecture or visual culture/visual studies OR Bachelor’s in art history and master’s in history OR Master’s in art with a recorded emphasis or concentration in art history OR the equivalent. • Previous community college teaching experience in three-dimensional design, sculpture and/or ceramics. • A broad, traditional background in art with the ability to teach a wide variety of art courses in three- dimensional design, sculpture and/or ceramics. • Possession of minimum qualifications to teach art history courses. • Abilities, training and experience which will help define and establish new directions and techniques in art education at Gavilan, including evolving technologies and the use of computers and multi-media. • A portfolio demonstrating professional skills as an artist. • Prior experience in teaching art in a college setting. • Art curating/gallery experience. • Knowledge and skills necessary to implement a student-centered approach to learning that is motivational, builds self-esteem and addresses differences in student learning styles and needs. • Demonstrated involvement in community activities/service. • A commitment to the education of students for a more complex, diverse and technological world environment. • Experience that demonstrates sensitivity to the social, economic and diversity represented by community college students including first-generation, under-prepared or historically under- represented students. • Ability to engage and motivate students from diverse cultural, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds. • Role model of professionalism SALARY Initial salary placement in the current Faculty Salary Schedule depends on education and experience. Benefit package includes employee and dependent medical, vision, dental plans, and $50,000 life insurance.
