Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, it offers insight into the cultural, religious and technological development of the Saflieni period in Malta's prehistory from 3300 to 3000 BCE. The structure comprises of three stories and was a place of burial and worship. The only prehistoric by xiquinhosilva underground temple discovered, it offers a unique opportunity to glean an understanding of Malta's rich prehistory. Several important artifacts have been recovered from the site including the 'sleeping lady'. With each chamber being carved only of flint and stone tools, it's a true architectural marvel. Red ocher paintings are still visible on some walls. The remains of over 7000 people have been recovered from this site. +356 21 80 5019 heritagemalta.org/museums- Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, Paola sites/hal-saflieni-hypogeum/ St. John's Co-Cathedral "World Famous Baroque Cathderal" A visit to the city of Valletta is incomplete without seeing the St. John's Co- Cathedral, considered by many to be one of the best examples of Baroque architecture and the most beautiful cathedral in the whole world. Constructed in the late 16th Century by the Knights of Malta, it features some of the most stunning interior decorations and wall frescoes in all of by Radoneme at English Europe, painted by renowned medieval artists, including the Grand Master Wikipedia Caravaggio. As you walk in, the sheer grandeur and opulence of the church are sure to take your breath away with a delicate tomb laid marble floor, gold-gilded decorations and fantastic altar designed by the great Maltese sculptor, Melchiorre Cafà. An in house museum showcasing sacred silk vestments of saints, Flemish tapestries, vintage choral books and other treasured artworks. Seven chapels are located inside the cathedral dedicated to eight different saints of the Knights and do not require an entry fee to visit if you just want to pray. As the fabric of the church is delicate and has to be constantly maintained by the heritage foundation, a limited number of tourists are allowed to visit at a time and women are advised not to wear sharp heels in order to avoid damage to the marble floors. The exquisite palace forms the formal residence of the President of Malta, although it was historically built as a country villa for Antoine de Paule, a knight of the Order of St. John. In the later years, it would be used as the by Berthold Werner abode of the Grand Masters of the order. During the Maltese Uprising, the palace was also the official place of meeting for the National Assembly. Expanded several times during its occupation by the Grand Masters, the palace holds within its confines two chapels, each of them consigned to Our Lady of Pilar and St. Anthony. The stunning limestone palace sits amid lovely gardens that are counted amid the city's prized spectacles, replete with walkways and aviary features. Ornamental ponds and splendidly carved sculptures dot the garden's expanse and a graceful canopy of palm, cypress, jacaranda and araucarias trees provide ample shelter from the bright sun. The museum focuses on the local ecosystem and features a wide array of collection of minerals, insects, reptiles, fish and by Tony Hisgett from fossils. The theft of the Goodwill Moon rock from this museum in 2004, Birmingham, UK brought the museum in the limelight. This church is said to be located right on the spot where Roman governor Publius converted his faith to Christianity under St. Paul. Created by famous architect Giorgio Grognet de Vassé, the church has a circular shape inspired by the Roman pantheon. More than just a remnant of the English colonial reign in Malta, Fort Rinella is also the world's oldest mechanical fortress that allowed its battalion to use a gigantic 100- tonne armor every few minutes. Jules Verne, acclaimed French novelist visited Fort Rinella in the by Frank Vincentz year 1889 and described the fort as " a marvel of the industrial age which would render Malta safe for ever". One of the most visited attractions in Malta, the Blue Grotto takes after its mesmerizing counterpart in Capri, the Grotta Azzurra di Capri. This magical grotto finds itself in the village of Qrendi near Wied iz-zurrieq, a quiet fishing town on by un.cloned Malta's south coast. Here, as the midday sun hits its denim waters, its surface reveals a miraculous sheen of phosphorescence, reflecting its underwater fauna. Tourists visit from near and far to witness this sight that can be viewed anytime between sunrise and one in the afternoon. The Blue Grotto and its cavernous arches are also famous sites for boating, snorkeling and rock-climbing. Blue Grotto, Il Qrendi, Żurrieq Maltese Catacomb Complexes "Hewn Cemeteries" The Maltese Catacomb Complexes were carved out of live rock and are located below the modern town of Rabat which was the ancient Roman town of Melite. During the Roman times, burials in the city premises were forbidden, hence an intricate burial system was developed. The complexes comprise the whole of St. Paul's and St. Augusta's complex by Azylber and have more than 1,000 tombs. These catacombs played an important role in Malta's early Christianity. It also gives a glimpse of the early Christian burial rituals. These interconnected, subterranean Roman cemeteries are a fine example of the Maltese underground architecture.     MALTESE NEWSLETTER 151 January 2017 In its news bulletin broadcast TVM reported on the estimated number of Maltese living overseas. According to statistics held by TVM the number of Maltese up to the fifth generation residing abroad around the world is estimated at about 900,000, which more than double the population living in Malta. By far the largest number of Maltese descendants up to the fifth generation lives in Australia where, according to the news report, from the census they are estimated at 447,000. The second largest group of Maltese overseas lives in the United States numbering 220,000 and England with 91,000 is the third largest. The surprising news was that there are Maltese who reside in places that one does not expect to find them, such as, Macao, Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Christmas Island, Vanuatu as well as Trinidad and Tobago. There are some, if only a few individuals, living in countries such as Iran, Iraq, Botswana and Congo. Malta’s membership of the European Union appears to have led to a substantial increase in the number of Maltese living in Belgium now numbering about 668. In continental Europe the Maltese presence includes 900 in Italy, 23 in the Vatican, 600 in France and 276 in the Netherlands. There is also a large longstanding Maltese community on the Mediterranean island of Corfu numbering 7,000. Malta’s commercial ties with the Middle East have led to an increase of Maltese presence in those countries including 733 in the United Arab Emirates and 36 in Qatar among others.

    MALTESE ASSOCIATION ORDER OF MALTA 2018 HOSPITALLER ACTIVITIES REPORT 2017 SAMOC Trolley Service A trolley refreshment service at Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre continues to be provided as a means of support and comfort to Our Lords the Sick undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment at the hospital. Prison Ministry Volunteers and Members of the Maltese Association visit several young foreign male and female inmates on a regular basis. The aim of these visits is to help these special people regain their confidence and self-esteem to be able to integrate with society once again after discounting their prison term. Prison Ministry Summer BBQ and Thanksgiving Supper The traditional annual Thanksgiving Supper and Summer BBQ for all inmates at the Young Persons Offenders Unit, in Mtahleb are held in January and August respectively. We are immensely thankful to our regular volunteers who unfailingly organise and assist in all the preparations and cooking. Visits to St Vincent de Paule Residence, Home for the Elderly This activity is organised by a dedicated member of the Order and an equally dedicated member of FOTO, mostly for the benefit of persons who lack family and friends to visit them. Monthly visits from October to June take place at the Ruzar Briffa Section. Pre-Lourdes Lunch for Malades The Maltese Association organised a familiarisation lunch for Our Lords the Sick at The Radisson Blu Hotel in St Julians. This event gives the opportunity for patients and personnel to meet up and get to know each other. The patients are also briefed on the pilgrimage to Lourdes.

We have strong family values , a wonderful history , a people noted for their hospitality and human warmth and of course our many centuries of Christian Catholic faith which is so imprinted in our ‘ dena ‘ . Our people have contributed greatly to the on-going development of Australia. Australia is my home but I am a Maltese Australian and proud of it . I was born at Floriana baptised at Msida did my first communion at Hamrun and my confirmation at Valletta . I lived at Pieta and Hamrun . Mum is form Paola and dad from Hamrun . My grandparents are from Rabat ,Luqa , Floriana and Imqaba , so you see I am from all over Malta !! I came to Australia when I was 13 days old . I have enjoyed my 41 years of ministry as a priest and have been blessed with countless meaningful connections with people . God has now called me to this new ministry in Darwin and the Northern Territory. I need many prayers so that I can serve God and His people . The only prehistoric by xiquinhosilva underground temple discovered, it offers a unique opportunity to glean an understanding of Malta's rich prehistory.

Although the Agency continued to strive to achieve satisfactory results in the number of visitors and generation of revenue it closed its books with a deficit. Besides organising several popular exhibitions and participated in important exhibitions abroad it continued to invest more in the sites under its management. During the year under review it also increased the number of staff employed not only to improve its operations but also to increase the resources needed for the vast number of cultural activities, projects and work carried out throughout the year. The Agency finances its operations through revenues, mainly from admission fees to museums and sites, and also from a Government subvention. The net revenue generated from admission fees by the Agency in 2019 reached €8,657,464 (2018: €8,957,154). A government subvention of €5,199,998 (2018: €5,049,996) was received during the year to meet the Agency's administrative expenditure for the financial year ended 31 December 2019. Furthermore, an amount of €253,836 (2018: €213,869) is paid to Government as rent on various sites and premises occupied by Heritage Malta.

Valletta in the 17th and 18th centuries To the original group of public buildings in Valletta the Order added in the 17th and 18th centuries, a theatre, a library, a custom house and a municipal palace for the Università of Valletta and the Three Cities. The Law Courts (Castellania) were rebuilt and the Church of St John was decorated by the paintings and sculpture of the Neapolitan artist Mattia Preti. During the 18th century new buildings in Valletta had a more worldly use. In 1732 the Manoel Theatre was built (the oldest standing theatre in Europe today), a library and warehouses along the Valletta Grand Harbour waterfront. Grand Master Pinto’s warehouses (known as Pinto Wharf) were built in the second half of the 18th century – today these have become the Valletta Waterfront sea- passenger terminal. The Grandmaster’s Palace and most of the auberges had their façade decorated on the th baroque style. Some of the richest houses (eg.Casa Rocca Piccola) were built in the 18 century. Strada San Giorgio and Strada Mercanti were the best streets of Valletta having most of the finest buildings with shops, stores or workrooms in the ground floor. Strada Forni and Strada San Paolo were mainly residential having fewer shops and fewer public buildings. In the 17th century more and more people went to live within the walls of the city.
