Welcome all to the August issue of The Mylander

I’d fi rstly like to thank all those that got in touch aft er my very fi rst issue of The Mylander in May. I am looking forward to delivering many more issues to your door and meeti ng some of you on my hunt for stories!

I hope this reaches you well and that you are enjoying the summer, with all that it brings. And especially to those who have the added joy (and challenges!) of moving into their new home. Living on the Chesterwell estate, it is fascinati ng to see just how quickly these houses are going up—and before you know it there are cars on the driveway! A warm welcome to all our new neighbours.

I know there are many new families joining our community and I have tried to put myself in your shoes—what do you want or need to know about your new community?

Please take a look at the new secti ons; Council Reports, Sport, From inside the Community, Charity, Churches and Learning & Growing. There is also a new feature of the magazine, the ‘What’s on’ guide, which I hope will develop as businesses and groups add to this in coming months. I hope, whatever your interests, that you fi nd something to read about in this issue.

I have really enjoyed getti ng to know more and more people from our Parish, be it councillors, members of the community, or businesses. There is a great buzz about our growing community and it will be great to see everyone together at the MCC Summer Fete on August Bank Holiday (Monday 26th). If you have not heard much about this, please turn to the advert on the back page or p17 to see what fantasti c prizes are available in the raffl e. I am sure it will be a day not to be missed and great fun for the whole family.

There is not much else to say other than ... happy reading!

4 Myland Community Council

This is my first Mylander contribution since being elected Chairman of the Council in May this year. I want to thank Councillor Pete Hewitt for all he has done as Chairman for the last year. I am pleased to say he has agreed to remain as Vice Chairman of the Council and also remain on our Planning & Highways Committee, where his expertise is very much appreciated.

The Council elections in May drew an increase in applicants to be a Councillor in the Myland Ward and such interest is always rewarding. Indeed, as at July, we have two vacancies for co- option to the Council and have four candidates applying. The successful two candidates will be decided at our July meeting.

Parish Councils remain largely ‘apolitical’ and free from party politics and Myland is no exception, believing that we work better for the Parish as a team. As a Council we have expanded our profile, not only on our website, but to Facebook as well. Our new Chair of the Community Engagement Committee, Marina de Smith, has ensured our presence at local fetes and is the driving force behind our Annual Fete. All of this ensures we do as much as we can to meet with and ascertain the views of residents in Myland. If you want to know more about your Council, please approach any of our Councillors (listed in the front of this magazine) or contact the Clerk to the Council, Katherine Kane (01206 854300), who will be pleased to assist you.

My job as Chairman is to ensure our Council meetings are managed and properly conducted. But I am also the public face of the Council and attend meetings and maintain liaison with Colchester Borough Council colleagues. I also meet regularly with our Borough Ward Councillors i.e. Mile End (Martin, David and Phil) and our Highwoods Ward (Gerard, Beverly and Phil). In May, I was pleased to be invited to attend the Annual Mayor Making Ceremony in the Town Hall, which saw Councillor Beverley Oxford elected as Deputy Mayor.

The next 12 months will no doubt be challenging but be assured that we, as a Council, are working to make sure Myland Council is working for you to improve your quality of life.

Councillor John Stewart Chairman

8 Council Reports

There are no reports in this issue from the Planning & Highways Committee, Neighbourhood Plan Group or Resources, Planning & Strategy Committee. Community Engagement Committee The Committee met on the 20th of May following the parish elections and I was delighted to be voted in as the new Chair for this year. We will be working hard to engage with the population of Myland to make events, such as the fete, a success.

On the 8th of May a group of 20 Myland senior citizens met for lunch at the Dog and Pheasant pub. It was lovely to see so many friends come together and enjoy each others company. The lunch was paid for by the now disbanded ‘Friends of Myland’, who left the money to the Council with the proviso that it be spent on the elderly of Myland and was hosted by Cllr Johnstone and myself.

The CEC held a poll recently through The Mylander, Facebook and website to find out where the residents of Myland would like to see the new ‘Lest we forget’ bench to be situated and most people voted for the bench to be placed by the War memorial at the top of Mile End Rd, near to the WI bench. The work to install it will commence soon.

The Community Engagement Committee meet on the third Monday of the month at 7.30pm at the MCC office, (101 Nayland Rd, CO4 5EN) and everyone is welcome to attend and see what we do.

The CEC are now looking for stall holders and volunteers to help with the setting up and running of the fete on August 26th. If you have any spare time or you would like a stall at the fete please contact either myself or Katherine on 01206 853400 or 07791463080 for more information.

In the meantime, I hope you have a lovely summer. Cllr Marina de Smith Chair - Community Engagement Committee

9 Council Reports

Annual Community Meeti ng The Annual Community Meeti ng (ACM) took place on 29th May, at Mile End Methodist Church Hall, as an open meeti ng for the general public to att end. It was an opportunity for residents to meet your Council representati ves and fi nd out more about the Parish.

Guest speaker representati ves from North East Essex NHS Clinical Commissioning Group were invited to share their thoughts on the challenges and opportuniti es for this part of Essex and the evening ended with the inaugural presentati on of the honorary Freedom of Myland.

The fi rst part of the evening received a presentati on from the North East Essex NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). Jane Mower and Chris Howlett gave the meeti ng a candid and thought provoking outline of the challenges facing health provision in a growing borough and surrounding parts of Essex.

The complexiti es of funding and the seemingly never ending phases of change present conti nual challenges. However, it was evident that much is happening to bring new strategic approaches to responsibility sharing and preventati ve measures to the fore.

The CCG is clearly giving focus to ways of improving health and well-being and it was pleasing to see how this aligned well with some of your council’s own acti ons. Access to green space is seen as an important element so that walking, cycling and other mobility means enable people to gain the acknowledged benefi ts from having ti me to enjoy quieter natural surroundings.

10 The second part of the evening saw the first ever presentation of the Freedom of Myland to local resident Patrick Mills.

Your council had decided to follow other towns and parishes in recognising residents who had given exceptional service to the community. This is an honorary award and is the highest that we can bestow upon an individual (or organisation) and when Patrick was nominated it was unanimously agreed he would be a fitting first recipient.

Patrick was instrumental in establishing the original Myland Parish Council (now Myland Community Council) as a means of giving local voice to the impending massive development of the Parish.

He subsequently served for many years on the Council and was concerned to give that same local voice to the residents of New Braiswick Park, which when built was outside the parish boundary. Again, he worked tirelessly with some others to petition for its successful inclusion into the parish.

Patrick is passionate about Myland and has researched 80 pages of history and fact that is available on-line. His passion for the people and place in which he lives was again evident when he was involved in awarding the Myland Order of Merit to others who had contributed to the ▲ Patrick Mills holding his framed certificate that community. It is planned that their names should Sir Bob Russell, High Steward of Colchester, be recorded for posterity on a Roll Of Honour to be presented during the ACM. displayed publicly. Cllr Pete Hewitt

[email protected] Council Reports

Myland Access Group In the last issue, I wrote about our continual efforts to survey the 30 footpaths and two bridleways of Myland. It doesn’t make for pleasant reading!

At least 18 of these Public Rights of Way are obstructed or all but extinguished. Eight of our Public Footpaths are now shared or segregated cycleways; six are regularly used by vehicular traffic, three are obstructed by buildings, and of course Public Footpath 39 is obstructed by the A12!

I am of course, not complaining about the provision of very necessary cycling infrastructure, the A12 or building new homes – merely asking why it always has to be at the expense of Public Footpaths?

I sometimes wonder how this state of affairs has come about. You might think that it is the natural result of development, but the National Planning Policy Framework does not allow it. Para 98 states - “Planning policy and decisions should protect and enhance Public Rights of Way.”

Colchester Borough Council has adopted the guidance note for developers which advises that - “Paths should be retained on their existing routes wherever possible.....There is every expectation therefore that the existing Public Right of Way should stay where it is, particularly in large development sites, where layout of the new build should be designed to accommodate the path alignment.”

In the current Chesterwell development between Mile End and Bergholt Roads, there are ten public footpaths and yet Essex Highways, who are a statutory consultee, have said that they will not be asking the developer to do anything at all to nine of them. This would appear to be an ideal opportunity to “protect and enhance”. The new build has not been designed to accommodate footpaths – the footpaths have simply been ignored! So much for protecting and enhancing!

We are continuing with our monthly litter picks and making footpath improvements. Keep an eye open on Facebook and noticeboards or call the clerk to find out more. Cllr Robert Johnstone

“This is the longest distance open water swimming event in north Essex and taking part is a great chance for people to experience the buzz of being part of a fantasti c sporti ng event.

“All the money raised through people taking part in this sponsored swim will go towards helping local people face incurable illness and bereavement, supporti ng them, their families and carers.”

Women’s Insti tute This quarter of W.I. began with the Annual Meeti ng when the various appointments were made. Ann Duff y was elected as President for the next year.

Aft er all the business had been completed, a fashion show with a diff erence took place! Quite a few members took part, wearing items of clothing that they had bought in charity shops. The audience had to guess how much had been paid for the clothes. There were plenty of bargains which our members had found and it proved to be quite a fun event!

In June, Michelle Cook gave a very interesti ng talk about Acorn Village and in July, Andy Bennett gave a fascinati ng insight into a year of beekeeping.

In additi on to our usual monthly meeti ngs, many of us att ended the Spring Valley Annual meeti ng which was held in Nayland Village Hall. Our speaker was Eve Regelous, a former theatrical agent. She told us of her dealings with various famous personaliti es. Aft erwards a singer entertained us with a wide variety of songs to suit all tastes.

Our next quarter promises to be a mixed bag- starti ng with Gillian Bruce speaking on ’How Climate Change Aff ects us all’. In September it’s down to the members with an evening of Heirlooms — Show and Tell, and in October, Bill Roberts will be sharing his experiences as an armed protecti on offi cer.

In additi on to our meeti ngs, the W.I. will be running the popular refreshment stall at the Annual Village Fete.

Hopefully all this informati on has whett ed your appeti te to come along and try an evening. We are a friendly lot of ladies, so why not be brave and come along to the Highwoods Community Centre on the fi rst Friday of the month at 7.30pm.

In May, we had a lady from the British Heart Foundation explaining some interesting facts and figures on heart related issues. In June, one of our own members, from E.A.C.H. Children’s Hospice, gave a very enlightening account of the work and treatment involved in looking after the children at the Hospice. Not only are the children looked after, but also considered are the parents, siblings and carers.

In July, we have a speaker from Cancer Research, another subject of considerable interest from which, no doubt, we will learn about some of the latest breakthroughs in treatment. August we do not meet, being a holiday month.

On our return in September we have a speaker from the Harwich Society, who will be telling us about the floods in the Harwich area in 1953. In October, Liz White will be telling us about the history of The Avenue of Remembrance in Colchester.

If you would like to join us please do come along on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the Myland Parish Halls, Mile End Road, 2.30pm – 4pm. Diana Swan Mothers’ Union We have just had a very successful Strawberry Tea and here are our dates for the rest of the year. Do join us if you can:

On Saturday 17th August, we are holding a coffee morning in the Parish Halls, 10am - 12noon; everyone is welcome. There will be a raffle and a Bring an’ Buy sale, (no books, CDs or videos please). Admission, including tea/coffee and cake, is £2.50.

On September 4th we will be entertained by Rev John Chandler, including hymns and other songs. October 2nd is when we pack shoeboxes for children, who would otherwise not have a Christmas present. November 6th, we shall have a “Quiet Hour” led by Rev Hazel Greenland and on December 4th, we enjoy a carol service and refreshments. June Chandler M.U. Secretary

A message from Your Mobile phone - Cybercrime and SMISHING

• Smishing Using smart phone texts to phish for victims’ confidential information -- is soaring, and it’s more dangerous than email phishing.

• Phishing The scam that involves tricking people into giving away confidential information, is surging via text messaging, posing a greater than ever risk of identity theft.

The reason? People trust text messages more than they do email, so they’re more likely to fall for the scam.

This type of phishing, better known as “smishing” has been around for years but because consumers have wised-up to email tricks and, in fact, are using email less and less for simple messages, scammers have switched their focus to SMS texts to target their victims.

The text usually contains a link that downloads malware, which steals as much data as it can find. And therein lies the threat:

Your smartphone knows a lot more about you than your PC, so an installed piece of malware might steal the phone numbers in your contact list and spread the virus in hopes to exponentially multiply. Even important bits of personal data, like banking credentials or your tracking location, can be at risk.

24 Scammers are also using texts to pose as tax authorities, not just in the US but also in the UK and Canada. The tactic creates a false sense of realism because many people don’t realize that text messages can be a threat. They say that the user is due a tax refund or needs to provide more information. Basically, they try to get users’ information, and that can be used for stealing their money.

Research suggests as many as one in three smartphone users had been targeted by a smishing attempt in just six months last year, although the actual number is likely to be higher, since most people don’t report scam attempts. What to Do

The best thing you can do to avoid falling victim is to never click on a link inside a text message.

Certainly, you should never respond to a request for a password or other confidential information. Instead, visit the real website of the organization that seems to be asking and check if it’s a genuine request.

You should also use extreme caution even if the message asks you to send the word “Stop” to stop receiving messages, as many do, unless you’re 100% sure that it’s genuine.

Sending a “Stop” message may not land you in immediate trouble but it signals to a phishing scammer that there’s a bite on the line.

In fact, for the same reason, you should never reply to text messages from someone you don’t know. It simply opens the door for an onslaught of spam. Block the sender if you can. But otherwise, just delete the message.

And don’t share your cell phone number on social media.

In addition, it’s wise to install an anti-malware app on your phone.

BIG Garden The Editor writes: The BIG Garden occupies a field of formerly agricultural land within High Woods Country Park in Colchester, with panoramic views across the valley towards the town. Since 2017, the Big Friendly Gardeners and Together We Grow CIC have managed the site as an independent community facility. MCC is very proud to provide financial support for this project as part of our Community Action Plan.

Summer is always a very popular time in the garden as the soft fruits are ready for picking, which of course always disappear very quickly when it comes to produce share out time.

The new raspberry bed we planted is going great guns and of course the strawberries do not get neglected for long. We also have our currant bushes.

Work continues with North Primary School alternating between their school and the Big Garden.

In the waiting room... We have some good news at Mill Road Surgery; we have finally employed a new Nurse Practitioner. Linda Smith will be starting early July, she is very experienced so will be up and running straight away. She will be here for a least a year to cover for Amy’s maternity leave, speaking of Amy she had a healthy baby boy in early June.

We also have a locum Nurse Practitioner, Ali Jones who will be doing a few clinics with us over the summer; there should be plenty of ‘on the day’ appointments now! Remember we also have pre bookable appointments at the weekend too.

Lots of us have booked our summer holidays now; if you are going abroad and would like advice from our nurses please make sure you get your travel assessment forms in at least a month before you go. We arrange the travel assessments in date of travel order so bear with us; we will contact you in plenty of time to have any vaccinations you need.

A few weeks ago I met with an Admiral Nurse, I will be honest I had not heard of them before. These nurses are there to provide support and advice to relatives and carers of people with Dementia. There are two Admiral Nurses based in the General Hospital and can be utilised if your relative with dementia is admitted and there are three more Admiral Nurses based at The Kingswood Centre on Turner Road. They are funded by Dementia UK charity and can be contacted via the helpline 0800 888 6678 or by calling The Kingswood Centre 01206 228944.

I hope you all enjoy a warm and not too wet summer, next time it will be all about flu vaccines again, where did that year go! Tina Potter Nurse Manger Mill Road Surgery

St Helena Hospice New technology to record end of life choices

If you have an incurable illness or care for someone who has an incurable illness or is suff ering from fragility or dementi a, then this arti cle will be of interest to you.

Have you heard of the My Care Choices Register, or MCCR for short? Developed and introduced by St Helena, the charity which helps local people face incurable illness and bereavement, the MCCR was fi rst launched in September 2013.

Research had showed that people don’t want to spend their last year or their last days in hospital but this was oft en the case due to poor co-ordinati on of care or crisis driven care. The introducti on of the MCCR has alleviated some of these issues.

The pati ent is empowered to record their end of life choices. Questi ons such as: Who do you want to care for you when you are too poorly to manage it all yourself? Where would you like to be? What informati on do you want those caring for you to know? These are oft en subjects that are never discussed – they are the elephant in the room.

Did you know that if you want to die at home, then you must have a DNACPR (do not att empt cardiopulmonary resuscitati on) form in place? This informati on can be listed on the My Care Choices Register and all local health care professionals can view it.

To fi nd out more, visit www.mycarechoices.online or chat to your healthcare professional.

The My Care Choices Register is specifi c to north east Essex but anyone can download the booklet and start the conversati on.

New café to beat loneliness Loneliness can affect anyone at any stage of life and can have a detrimental impact on health and well-being.

CAFE ‘Colchester and Friends Events’, an initiative to encourage people to come together and get talking, launched its first event on 3 June at GO4 Café. The free event is aimed at people struggling with isolation and loneliness who would like to meet for refreshments and a friendly chat.

From Monday 1 July, nine new venues joined GO4 Café to run CAFE events across Colchester: Age Concern Colchester, Book Rest Café, Greenstead Social Club, We Walk the Line Café at Firstsite, The Victoria Inn, Wednesday Coffee Mornings at Wimple Road Methodist Church, Mount Bures Connections, Thirsty Thursday and Friendly Friday at St Michael’s Church in Myland and 5T’s (Together on Thursdays for Tea at Two-Thirty) at St Mary’s Church Hall. Days and times vary depending on the venue.

Cllr Mike Lilley, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Communities, Wellbeing and Public Safety, said: “Loneliness can be devastating and it’s scary to think that as many as one in ten people say that television is their main companion.

“I’m really pleased that we are launching nine new venues in July and I would encourage anyone who is interested to go along. I hope that by bringing people together, we can help people be better connected to the communities they live in and at the same time support the aims and objectives of the Livewell Initia-tive.”

All kinds of venues are being encouraged to sign up to hold CAFE events, opening their doors for up to two hours once a week, to allow people to come in for refreshments and a friendly chat.

For more information on CAFE and becoming a CAFE venue, visit colchester.gov.uk/cafe. You can follow CAFE at Enjoy Colchester on Facebook and @YourColchester on Twitter.

Re-Cycle Re-Cycle is a charity based in Essex that takes unwanted bicycles and parts from the UK and ships them to trusted partners in Africa.

We believe in an Africa unlimited by transport. Our sustainable bike re-use model has a dual benefit:

• Bikes that have been languishing, unwanted in garages all over the UK are donated and put to good use, rather than ending up in landfill sites.

• These bikes are then shipped to Africa, providing a cheap, sustainable and eco-friendly form of transport for people and communities who have no other way of reaching each other. In 2018 we sent 16 container loads to Africa, containing 8,000 bikes. The need for bikes

649 million people live in rural communities in Africa, and many of these people must walk for long distances to reach crucial services and social support networks. Not only does this take a toll on health, it can also prevent children from reaching their place of education, denying them a good start in life.

Bikes provide an economical, easy to maintain form of transport. Having access to a bike can increase a family’s income by up to 35% and help to keep children in school. Other forms of transport can be either non-existent, or prohibitively expensive.

Re-Cycle choose not to refurbish donated bikes in the UK, and instead, after being quality checked, they are shipped to Africa and refurbished by qualified mechanics. In this way, our UK team have more time to source, check and ship bikes – and overseas bike mechanics (employed by partner organisations) have employment and can provide a place for new bike owners to take their bike for small repairs.

Bikes are cheap to repair, can last a lifetime when well cared for, and can be used by the entire family.

Shipping over 100,000 bikes to Africa is no mean feat; and Re-Cycle are fortunate enough to be heavily supported by volunteers who are vital to the running of the charity. We receive no government funding and rely on the support of the trusts, corporate organisations, groups and associations, individuals and our own fundraising.

32 Salifu’s story “Salifu Bah is a fourteen-year-old Grade 8 student and attends St Bosco basic school in Sintet in The Gambia. He received his bike on 1st October 2018. Before he got his bike, it uses to take him an hour to walk the 5 kilometres to get to school. He would sometimes have to leave before it got light and would often be late arriving.

It’s not uncommon for African children to face a ten mile walk to school. This often results in students being exhausted before class has even started. With a bicycle, this journey time can be reduced by 75% so students have more time and energy to focus on their lessons.

Not only did Salifu receive a bike, but he also attended Re-Cycle’s one day workshop, where students are taught how to maintain their bikes and when to take them to the mechanic. This means that students can identify problems before they become expensive to fix allowing their bikes to last longer.

Now enjoying school, Salifu’s favourite subject is English and he wants to become an education minister when he is older. He is also very happy that when he has finished his schooling, he will be able to give his bike to his brother so that he can use it to travel to school.

We aim to improve more lives, like Salifu’s through bicycle re-use.”

For further information on how you can support us or if you would like to make a donation of a bike of funds visit www.re-cycle.org

The charity also offers talks about the work of the charity to groups/associations, schools and churches. Please email: [email protected]

Love, Laugh, Learning Are you a looking for a new class for your little one? Do you want to make new friends in the local area? Are you looking for classes that are interactive, engaging and structured for your child’s development?

Love, Laugh, Learning (LLL) is launching in September this year, with classes for little ones from 0—5years old, within it’s very own venue at Fitness4less gym on Wyncolls Road.

Classes will be age appropriate with three aged groups: Little Loves (0 – 18 months), Little Laughers (18 months – 3 years) and Little Learners (3 – 5 years). Little Loves, being the youngest age group, will focus on sensory play, baby sign and bags to enhance activities. Little Learners will help toddlers to develop their communication skills through signing and learning about colours, shapes and numbers (and plenty of singing and games!) And Little Learners will help children to get school-ready by building confidence through continued learning and play.

38 In addition, there will be stay and play sessions in term-time from 1pm – 2.30pm on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. These will be £3 pay as you go, drop-in classes, with refreshments available for you and your child.

However, Kristy Kerry, the lady behind Love, Laugh, Learning, stresses that this is not just a learning through play type group—the intention behind the venue is to also provide a place for the whole community. The space will play host to a variety of businesses and services, that complement LLL’s values in supporting young families in the local area.

For example, Kristy will be supporting the Phoenix Midwives, by offering the space two nights a week for hypnobirthing classes. The Phoenix Team are part of a pilot scheme that is hoped to be rolled out within the next two years.

Kristy said, “It feels incredible to support the NHS and in particular the midwives who supported my family twice with my own little ones!”

The venue will also be hosting classes from Tiny Talk, Jo Jingles, Mind Over Mum baby massage and Sounds Right Phonics, as well as running parent workshops and first aid courses.

If all of that wasn’t enough, you can also hire the space for children’s (1 – 5years old) parties!

Kristy said, “I am forever grateful to Matt Skeats, the manager at Fitness4Less in Colchester, for believing in me and being so patient when all the building work was going on – it can’t have been easy! Matt was as keen as I was to come together to make something amazing for the local community.“

1st Myland Guides It’s been a busy start to the Summer term as we’ve spent a lot of time on our Amey Engineering challenge. We’ve designed stable structures (using sweets and toothpicks), re-designed towns and railways and made dancing drawing robots. This challenge was written with the idea of getting more girls into STEM subjects.

After half term we began work on our Innovate skill builder which forms part of our Express Myself theme award. We spent this evening working on a Sports Science activity and next week we’re turning the Guides into Top Trumps. We’ll be finishing the Skill builder later this term and will finish with a party in the park with food and games.

Our Guides helped at the Colchester Rotary 10K race in May by manning the water stations (as one of the runners this was VERY much appreciated). We’ve also had a few girls attend an International opportunity selection weekend – which if picked means they could travel the world with Girlguiding.

This weekend we visited 17th Colchester Sea Scouts for a camp in Mersea and our annual sailing weekend. Sadly the weather wasn’t kind to us but we had a lovely relaxed weekend completing pirate theme activities and eating fish and chips. There were late nights and early mornings but the girls were a pleasure to be around.
