RAMELLI CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF THE SACRED HEART, MILAN 1 ABSTRACT The Teaching of Addai is a Syriac document convincingly dated by some scholars in the fourth or fifth century AD. I agree with this dating, but I think that there may be some points containing possible historical traces that go back even to the first century AD, such as the letters exchanged by king Abgar and Tiberius. Some elements in them point to the real historical context of the reign of Abgar ‘the Black’ in the first century. The author of the Doctrina might have known the tradition of some historical letters written by Abgar and Tiberius. 117 Perspectives on Koinonia The Report from the Third Quinquennium of the Dialogue between the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity of the Roman Catholic Church and some Classical Pentecostal Churches and Leaders 1989 Introduction 1. This is a report of conversations held on the international level between the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unityl and some classical Pentecostal churches and leaders. It contains the results of the third phase of dialogue held 1985-1989. 2. Contacts for the dialogue were initiated in 1969 and 1970. Among the topics discussed during the first quinquennium (1972-1976) were Baptism in the Holy Spirit, Christian Initiation and the Char- isms, Scripture and Tradition, and The Human Person and the Gifts. In' the second quinquennium (1977-1982) consideration was given to Faith and Religious Experience, Speaking in Tongues, and Mary. The co-chairpersons during this third quinquennium, 1985-1989, were the Rev. Kilian McDonnell, OSB, Collegeville, Minnesota, USA and the Rev. Justus T. du Plessis of the Apos- tolic Faith Mission of South Africa. The conversations dealt with the subject of the Church as Koinonia. 3. The Rev. David J. du Plessis chaired the Pentecostal delegation during the first two phases of the dialogue. Indeed, the origin of the international Pentecostal/Roman Catholic dialogue, almost twenty years ago, owes much to initiatives he took during and after the Second Vatican Council. David du Plessis continued to take part in the third phase of the dialogue, providing important insights to our deliberations, until his death in 1987. The dialogue commission acknowledges, with gratitude to God, David du Plessis' important contribution to the origin and continuation of our work. -

The Contribution and Ecumenical Vision of Metropolitan Germanos Strenopoulos and Professor Hamilcar Alivisatos for a “Koinonia of Churches”
Draft outline used during the conference on The Hope of Communion: From 1920 to 2020 The contribution and ecumenical vision of Metropolitan Germanos Strenopoulos and Professor Hamilcar Alivisatos for a “Koinonia of Churches” Prof. Stylianos Tsompanidis, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki I. “Founding Fathers” of the Ecumenical Movement As the famous 1920 Encyclical of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople “Unto the Churches of Christ Everywhere” marks its 100th anniversary, this paper focuses on the contribution and ecumenical vision of Metropolitan Germanos Strenopoulos and Professor Hamilcar Alivisatos for a “Koinonia of Churches”. Both are among those who played a decisive role in the early stages of the Ecumenical Movement and accompanied with brilliant figures, pioneers and enthusiasts of the unitary effort of the Church. They are considered the "founding fathers" of the Ecumenical Movement. Metropolitan Germanos’s role was undeniably fundamental, not only during the drafting of the encyclical, but also during the phase when it was received by the non- Orthodox churches and by the ecumenical movement. The metropolitan, an astute and cultured man, embodied the genuine and mature ecumenical awareness of the Church of Constantinople. Likewise, since 1914 and on, Professor Η. Alivisatos participated in all the meetings and in fact as an active and important member of the ecumenical movements, precursors of the WCC. In 1948, at the founding General Assembly of WCC, Η. Alivisatos and the metropolitan of Thyateira Germanos (Strenopoulos) contributed to the voting of the first Constitution of the WCC.In that way they acted in general terms according to the spirit of the Patriarchal Encyclical and also, they founded the Council on a structure that was not substantially different from the one that was proposed and specified at the time of the circulation of the Encyclical. -

religions Article Believing in the Church: Why Ecumenism Needs the Invisibility of the Church Bradford Littlejohn Political Theory, Patrick Henry College, Purcellville, VA 20132, USA; [email protected] Received: 30 November 2018; Accepted: 5 February 2019; Published: 12 February 2019 Abstract: Amidst the plethora of approaches to ecumenical dialogue and church reunion over the last century, a common theme has been the depreciation of the classic Protestant distinction between the “visible” and “invisible” church. Often seen as privileging an abstract predestinarianism over the concrete lives and structures of church communities and underwriting a complacency about division that deprives Christians of any motive to ecumenical endeavor, the concept of the “invisible” church has been widely marginalized in favor of a renewed focus on the “visible” church as the true church. However, I argue that this stress on visible unity creates a pressure toward institutional forms of unity that ultimately privilege Roman Catholic ecclesiologies at the expense of Protestant ones, and thus fails of its ecumenical promise. Renewed attention to Reformational understandings of the relationship between divine grace and human action and the centrality and uniqueness of Christ as the foundation of the church, I argue, dispels some misunderstandings of the church’s “invisibility” and demonstrates the indispensability of the concept. I argue that this Reformational framework, which refuses to accept the empirical divisions of the Church as definitive and summons us to an ecumenism that belongs to the church’s sanctification, provides the best theological ground for ecumenical endeavor.
