2 The Revenue Model

The Child Mind Institute raises both philanthropic and fee-for-service revenue to support its activities. Families who utilize the Institute’s six clinical centers generate revenue that helps provide care for patients without the same financial resources, both at the centers and within public and charter schools in underserved areas in NYC and Newark, New Jersey. Additionally, this revenue supports the Child Mind Institute’s public education and science initiatives, ensuring that the Institute can help children receive the accurate diagnoses and evidence-based care that they need now and in the future. ❖ Financial aid packages cover up to 70% of the cost of the Institute’s clinical services for families in need, providing access to care that typically generates significant progress within 11 visits for full-pay families and within 16-20 visits for families receiving financial aid. Treatment programs within the Student Success Program are provided free of cost. ❖ The Student Success Program and Ellen Wiesenthal Initiative bring clinical and capacity-building services to schools that lack comprehensive mental health services, enabling frontline educators to reduce disruptive classroom behaviors and facilitate learning. ❖ Through the Healthy Brain Network, participants receive comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations; accurate, objective diagnosis; and care coordination.

The Child Mind Institute currently raises approximately $16M annually from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Most of the Institute’s annual revenue is contributed via give/get from its 32 Board members, who have been devoted supporters and advocates since the Institute was founded in 2009. Board members support the Institute through major gifts and sponsorship of the annual Child Advocacy Award dinner. While hundreds of donors give small and mid-level gifts (under $10K) and several dozen donors give at the $25K+ level, the organization is also working to grow the Annual Fund through a grateful patient program.

3 San Francisco Bay Area Need

With a large number of youth waiting for the care they need and an established base of leaders and donors willing to invest in the Child Mind Institute’s growth, the organization has determined that now is the time to expand to the West Coast.

Thanks to three generous families in the Silicon Valley, the Child Mind Institute has already secured $15 million to launch a Child Mind Institute West Coast clinical operation, which will open in the Fall of 2019. This regional expansion will help address several critical areas of need.

Limited Availability of Intensive, Evidence-Based Care • Shortage of evidence-based children’s mental health care in the region • Lack of multidisciplinary services that address multifaceted challenges • Limited coordination between mental healthcare providers • Shortage of pediatric neuropsychological testing services to deliver diagnoses • Low practitioner ration, with only 36 child psychiatrists per 100,000 children in San Francisco, compared to 128 per 100,000 in Manhattan

High Cost • High cost of living in the San Francisco Bay area, which is the fourth most expensive U.S. city to live in with costs that are on average 62.6% higher than the national average • Barriers to care faced by struggling lower and middle class families

Significant Mental Health Stigma • Performance-driven culture that sets high expectations for kids • Pressure to gain acceptance to elite programs that magnifies mental health challenges

“I’ve heard stories of parents “The prices are high for “We’ve seen kids attempt spending 10+ hours calling everyone – not just the low suicide, and parents won’t every provider they can find income families…middle class take them into treatment online, only to find none of families in the Bay Area are because they don’t want it to them have availability and being squeezed, it’s so hard go on their records for don’t know who does.” to keep up.” college acceptances…”
