Columbia College Chicago FRAMING IDEAS The Photographers of the New Bauhaus: An Expanded Vision Ken Josephson, Chicago, 1961 Curriculum Guide Aimed at middle school, high school, and college students, this resource is aligned with Illinois Learning Standards for English Language Arts Incorporating the Common Core and contains information on the artists and artistic traditions featured, questions for looking and discussion, and classroom activities. A corresponding image set can be found here. The MoCP is a nonprofit, tax- exempt organization accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The Museum is generously supported by Columbia College Chicago, the MoCP Advisory Committee, individuals, private and corporate foundations, and government agencies including the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. The museum’s education work is additionally supported by After School Matters, the Llyod A. Fry Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Introduction: The New Bauhaus Nathan Lerner, Light Volume, Chicago, 1937 The New Bauhaus, later called the Institute of Design (ID) at what is now the Illinois Institute of Technology was one of the most important schools of design and photography in America during the twentieth century. Founded in Chicago in 1937 by Lászlo Moholy-Nagy, the New Bauhaus aimed to train “the perfect designer” through a modernist and multi-disciplinary curriculum that encouraged experimentation and broke down the hierarchy between fine and applied arts and industry. In the mid 20th century, when fewer art schools existed and photography was seldom taught as anything other than a trade, the photography department at the ID was at the forefront of innovative methods of art education. -

Art Design Chicago, A Year-Long Initiative Spearheaded by Terra Foundation for American Art, Explores Chicago’s Pivotal Role In Global Art and Design Movements and Innovations Exhibition Schedule, January–December 2018 CHICAGO—October 11, 2017—Spearheaded by the Terra Foundation for American Art, Art Design Chicago is a year-long initiative that explores Chicago’s role as a catalyst and incubator for innovations in art and design. Focusing on the period between the 1871 Chicago Fire and the turn of the 21st century, Art Design Chicago will feature more than 25 exhibitions, several new scholarly publications, a documentary, as well as hundreds of academic and public programs, presented from January–December 2018. Together, these activities shine a light on Chicago’s art and design legacy, providing new insights into the city’s enduring influence on fine and decorative arts, graphic and commercial design, product development, and film, and revealing lesser-known narratives of ingenuity and perseverance. Art Design Chicago was developed in partnership with more than 60 cultural organizations throughout the City of Chicago and beyond, which range widely in scale, mission, and approach. While the majority of the initiative’s activity will take place in and around Chicago, several of the exhibitions are expected to tour nationally and internationally and others will open at organizations across the U.S. To support the success of Art Design Chicago, Terra Foundation is investing more than $6.5 million, with monies going toward research and development as well as implementation grants to cultural partners, and promotional and administrative costs for the initiative. -

For Immediate Release: Thursday, December 12, 2019 Contact: Charlotte Easterling 608.257.0158 x 240 [email protected] MMoCA CELEBRATES MAJOR GIFT OF NEARLY 100 WORKS OF CHICAGO IMAGIST ART UNCOMMON ACCUMULATION: THE MARK AND JUDY BEDNAR COLLECTION OF CHICAGO IMAGISM March 14–July 19, 2020 MADISON, WI— To celebrate Mark and Judy Bednar’s transformative gift of Chicago Imagist art from their collection to the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, MMoCA will bring together the works in the museum’s main galleries with the exhibition Uncommon Accumulation: The Mark and Judy Bednar Collection of Chicago Imagism. From March 14 through July 19, 2020, Uncommon Accumulation will showcase the works that have already been gifted to the museum alongside the promised gifts that have been collected by the Bednars over the past 45 years. The gift from the Bednars complements the museum’s existing collection of Chicago Imagism through its inclusion of artworks produced very early in the careers of several of the artists. Formative works by Roger Brown, Robert Lostutter, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, Ed Paschke, Christina Ramberg, Barbara Rossi, Karl Wirsum, and Ray Yoshida from the 1960s and 70s—a period when some of the Imagists were still in graduate school at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC)—are part of this extraordinary gift. These new additions uphold MMoCA as having one of the largest, and now one of the most comprehensive, collections of Chicago Imagism. The Chicago Imagists were a group of figurative artists who emerged in Chicago in the mid-1960s. Using vibrant color and bold lines, they depicted the human body as grossly distorted and highly stylized.
