TIMES Volume 1 1993

Dear Florida NOW Members,

As 1992 ends, it is time for reflection, and to a large degree, relief that it's over. The much heralded Year of the Women was actually the culmination of many years of planning and effort. In Florida, women ran in record numbers. While they didn't all win, it would be shortsighted to view these elections solely in terms of winning and losing. Women were not only the candidates, but also campaign manager~ and were invaluable in strategic planning. Most importantly across the nation the money raised for these campaigns came from women - in unprecedented amounts. While in Florida, the results were somewhat disappointing, we do have things to celebrate. Former South Palm Beach NOW President, Suzanne Jacobs and Broward NOW member, , were elected to the Florida House of Representatives.

To the new Congress, Florida will send five women, including Dade NOW's and Jacksonville NOW's Corinne Brown. Other NOW members elected to Congress include Peter Deutsch and Alc~ Hastings. NOW played a pivotal role in these campaigns. While nationally women were elected in historic proportions, much remains to be done to reach our goal of parity. We will not rest until we have won.

As 1993 approaches, there are many challenges ahead. We will, as always, protect abortion rights and work to secure civil rights for lesbians and gay men. Opportunities at the federal level must be seized and acted upon NOW. We must be ready to promote women at all levels of government. To position women at the appellate and federal levels of the judiciary, we must elect th~m at the county and circuit level. Naming women to the local judicial nominating committees and actively lobbying the governor will be part of the task. The process is a long and arduous one. Florida NOW is committed every step of the way.

Our political goals are only part of our agenda. In 1993, we will actively seek diversity and promote growth for our organization. Plans for regional forums are underway. The first in the Panhandle is scheduled for January 23. Fundraising and membership training will be offered on a continuing basis. The coming year promises to be an active one for Florida NOW.

In doing all of this important and critical work, we must not neglect the cultural and artistic sides of our being. living feminism in our daily lives keeps our souls nourished, and is the very foundation of our movement.

Finally, we must reaffirm our commitment to young Feminists. Their aspirations and dreams are too precious to squander. We must give them the tools and resources to continue the struggle. With them, we can say with pride and certainly, we "gave everything (we) had for justice". Best personal wishes for 1993.

Until Equality and Justice are Ours,
