4 Chairman’s Notes

Firstly my welcome to the Players, Management Team, Committee and Supporters of Tamworth FC and to the Match Officials for this Evostik Southern Premier Division Central league fixture.

Since my last notes and the 2-0 defeat at home to Royston we have suffered two further defeats, both away, to Redditch Utd and Banbury Utd. Last Saturday’s game at Banbury saw a much improved performance and, having got back to 1-1 just before half time with another Joe Marsden penalty, we were well on top in the second half until an injury to Sam Squire led to Banbury getting on top and scoring a winner with 5 mins remaining – a disappointing end to a game we really deserved to have got something from.

Looking back in the club’s history at the corresponding Saturday fixtures over the last 10 years I see that last season on 6th March 2018 we won 3-1 at home against Burgess Hill in a Bostik Premier League fixture with Keiran Morphew getting MOTM and Gareth Heath, Sam Nunn and Brendan Orcran scoring the goals. Two seasons ago on 11th March 2017 we lost 3-1 at home against Enfield Town in a Ryman Premier League fixture with Keiran again MOTM. Three years ago on 12th March 2016 we won 1-0 at home against Merstham with Keiran again getting MOTM and Michael Brothers getting the goal. Four years ago on 7th March 2015 we won 2-0 in a Ryman North League fixture at home to Soham Town Rangers with Joe Wight MOTM and Sam Newson scoring. Five years ago on 8th March 2014 we lost 2-1 at home against Cheshunt with Keiran MOTM and Ryan Crisp scoring our goal.

Six years ago on 9th March 2013 there was no corresponding fixture. Seven years ago on 10th March 2012 we beat Harlow Town 3-1 at home with goals from MOTM Duane Wright and Deakan Napier (2). Eight years ago on 12th March 2011 we drew 0-0 away at Enfield with Pip Boyland getting MOTM. Nine seasons ago on 6th February 2010, in our last season at Step 5 in the Ridgeons Premier League, we drew 1-1 at home against Felixstowe with MOTM Danny Smy scoring our goal. Finally ten years ago on 7th March 2009 we drew 0-0 away against Chalfont St Peter in a replay in the Quarter Final of the FA Vase losing 6-5 on penalties with Craig Parker getting MOTM.

Returning to this afternoons visitors, while it will be the Lambs first visit to Bloomfields, this will be the second time we have met them this season having played them away in a Tuesday night fixture back in January when we returned home with all 3 pts having won 2-1 with goals from Gareth Heath and Reece Dobson. Despite going down to 10 men midway through the second half when we were 1-0 up, a memorable defensive performance with Keiran getting our MOTM award saw us hold on to the 3pts, a win which took us up to 3rd place in the table. The Lambs are currently 13th in the table with 41 pts from their 32 games after having beaten Halesowen Town 4-1 at home last Saturday. After our defeat at Banbury on Saturday we have slipped back to 10th place with our 45 pts from our 33 games.

As ever, let’s get behind the Marketmen as the 12th man and help ensure that it’s us that get the 3 points this afternoon and get back into the play-off places.

Enjoy the game

9 NMFC Club History

Needham Market Football Club was officially formed in 1919 although records do indicate that games were played in the late 1890’s in the town. The original home for the club was Young’s Meadow until a move to Crowley Park was the base until 1996. The club then moved and opened a new development called ‘Bloomfields’. With the passing away of former player Arthur Rodwell leaving the club some money and with obtaining a successful Lottery Grant, we purchased the land the club is now situated on. With a great deal of hard and prudent work by some very enthusiastic individuals, we now find ourselves situated in a facility that we totally own and the club is truly proud of. The complex is named after club stalwart Derrick Bloomfield who has given more than 70 years service to the club. As well as being a player Derrick has held virtually every role in the club. To recognise his service the club awarded him a testimonial match when Ipswich Town Football Club visited the ground in 2004. He was also presented with a long service award from The Football Association for his achievement. When Needham Market Football Club first entered the Suffolk & Ipswich Football League (then known as the Ipswich & District League), it was also the playing arena for Clacton Town, Harwich & Parkeston, Hadleigh United, Stowmarket Town, Sudbury Town (now known as AFC Sudbury), and Woodbridge Town. Over the yeas the club has won many trophies with one of the most notable being crowned champions of the Senior Division of The Suffolk & Ipswich League in the 1995 / 1996 season. This coincided with the opening of ‘Bloomfields’ and a new chapter in the clubs history, as we then applied for promotion to the Jewson (then Ridgeons now Thurlow Nunn) League Division 1 which was duly accepted. Other honours won by the club include The Suffolk & Ipswich League Cup in the 1977 / 1978 season and the 1979 / 1980 season. The Suffolk Football Association Junior Cup was won in the season 1984 / 1985 and a successful trip to Portman Road the home of Ipswich Town Football Club; saw the club victorious in The Suffolk Football Association Senior Cup in the season of 1989 / 1990 and again in the season of 2004 / 2005. The final was also reached in this competition in the seasons of 1970 / 1971, 1979 / 1980, 1998 / 1999 and 1999 / 2000, unfortunately having to settle for runners-up spot on each occasion. The Reserve Team won The Suffolk & Ipswich Football League Reserves Division in the seasons of 1970 / 1971 and 1971 / 1972, and also The Suffolk & Ipswich Football League Intermediate B Division in the season of 1993 / 1994. Division Three of The Suffolk & Ipswich Football League was also won in the seasons of 1985 / 1986 and 2003 / 2004. After moving to the Essex & Suffolk Border League the Division Two title was won in the season of 1998 / 1999, and a year later came runners up in the League Cup losing out to Senior Division side Gas Recreation. The Reserve Team are currently playing in the Ridgeons Reserve League North Division. The Third Team or A Team as they were known, won The Suffolk & Ipswich League Division Eight Championship in the season 1983 / 1984, and were also successful in winning the Orwell Cup in the seasons of 1992 / 1993 and 1995 / 1996. In the season of 1996 / 1997 they also won The Saul Charity Cup. On the subject of The Saul Charity Cup it is an honour to have been the inaugural winners of this competition when first held in the season of 1935 / 1936. In the season of 2003 / 2004 they won Division Three of The Suffolk & Ipswich Football League and followed this success up a year later by winning Division 2 of The Suffolk & Ipswich Football League. This side also became the first A Team to win The Suffolk Football Association Primary Cup in the season of 2004 / 2005, and also became the highest placed A Team to reach Division One of The Suffolk & Ipswich Football League. The club no longer runs an A Team as most of the clubs young players now start in the reserve team. After being in The Ridgeons League Division 1 for a number of seasons we finally finished as runners up in the season of 2004 / 2005. This was a big thing for the club and to the Manager at that time Mark Morsley for all his efforts in getting the club promotion. In the clubs inaugural season in the Ridgeons Premier Division they finished in a very creditable 6 th place, and had a good run in The FA Vase going out to eventual winners Nantwich Town 6-3 AET. Manager Mark Morsley left the club at the end of the season under good terms after being appointed Manager of AFC Sudbury who had been newly promoted to The Ryman League. The club acted swiftly and appointed Danny Laws and Chris Tracey as joint managers for the 2006 / 2007 season. In their first season of Management they assembled a very young and talented squad of players who gained experience and some notable results. The club won its first ever FA Cup tie when they defeated Desborough Town at home. In The Suffolk Football Association Premier Cup a record crowd of 750 saw Ipswich Town win 3-0 at ‘Bloomfields’, but the biggest achievement was finishing in fourth position in the Ridgeons League Premier Division on 81 points and also lifting The East Anglian Cup after beating Concord Rangers 2-1 in the final. For season 2007 / 2008 Danny Laws was sole Manager after Chris Tracey decided to return to AFC Sudbury. This season proves to be fantastic for Danny and the players as the club moves to a new level making historic landmarks along the way. Finishing runners-up in the Ridgeons League Premier Division with a must win game on the last day of the season to first placed Soham Town Rangers needed. Unfortunately the game resulted in a 4-0 defeat. We were also losing semi-finalists in The FA Carlsberg Vase losing out to eventual winners Kirkham & Wesham. However Suffolk Football Association Premier Cup glory was achieved beating Leiston on penalties in the final held at Portman Road the home of Ipswich Town Football Club. Silverware was not finished there as victory for the first time in the Ridgeons League Challenge Cup beating Gorleston 2-1 in the final finished off the season on a high. Another good season in 2008 / 2009 for the club as a third place finish in the Ridgeons League Premier Division was achieved just missing out on 2 nd place on the last day of the season. Consecutive Suffolk Football Association Premier Cup finals achieved losing 3-2 to Lowestoft Town in what was a very exciting game of football. Having gone 2-0 down early on and somewhat looking out of the game, but the never say die attitude of the side were soon on level terms and only a last gasp penalty took the game away from extra time. A great run in The FA Vase once again this time going out to the lottery of a penalty shoot out to Chalfont St. Peter in the Quarter Finals. Season 2009 / 2010 was the most successful in the clubs history. The 1 st Team not only won The Eastern Counties League Premier Division for the first time, but also The Eastern Counties League – League Challenge Cup to make it a Domestic Double; a feat not achieved for some 15 years. A third successive Suffolk FA Premier Cup Final was also achieved only to be defeated by a very strong Ipswich Town XI. However the team did not disgrace themselves and came away with their heads

10 held high. For the second consecutive season, the Quarter Finals of the National FA Carlsberg Vase Competition were also reached only to once again be knocked out this stage. The 2010 / 2011 Season saw a new chapter in Needham Market Football Clubs history as for the first time Step 4 Football awaited in the form of The Ryman League Division One North. The anticipation, optimism and confidence was very high at the start of the season but no one was getting carried away as consolidation in the league was the priority. Well who would have thought the season we were to have. Challenging at the top of the league for the whole season with East Thurrock United who would eventually go on and win the championship, but we would have another bite of the cherry as 2 nd place was cemented in the league and a home semi-final play off. Unfortunately we would go on to lose this match 3-1 to Brentwood Town which was very difficult to take at the time especially as we finished 18 points ahead of them in the regular playing season. A fourth consecutive Final appearance in the Suffolk FA Premier Cup was also to be achieved but unfortunately a 2-0 defeat would ensue to Ryman Premier Division side Bury Town. Season 2011 / 2012 saw the club open its doors to a new venture as we introduced a full time Academy Programme for 16-18 year olds who would be studying for an NVQ in Sports Development half of the day and coached by Ex-Professional player Kevin Horlock the remainder of the day. In truth the scheme was a massive success with the lads on the scheme also forming our Reserve side who had an excellent season. They finished runners up in the Ridgeons Reserve League North Division, Semi-Finalists in The Suffolk FA Senior Reserve Cup and reached the 3 rd Qualifying Round of The FA Youth Cup (the furthest the club had ever reached). The future of this football club may well come from these up and coming players who will continue to develop and under their teaching, coaching and leadership the Academy will grow from strength to strength becoming very important to the legacy of the football clubs future. The First Team once again challenged for The Ryman League Division One North Title up until Christmas when a run of bad results ended the automatic promotion route but the club remained in the play off positions for the remainder of the season. We were top scorers in the division with 104 goals and finished 4 th in the division. Victory in the play off semi-final away at Tilbury in shall we say a mammoth match!! set up a play off final 36 hours later at league runners up Enfield Town. In truth this was too short a turnaround and we were both physically and mentality drained unfortunately losing the game 1-0. Season 2012 / 2013 was a very difficult one in comparison with the previous seasons in that Needham had a long barren spell without recording a win at Bloomfields until the New Year. The club did following his resignation from Leiston move quickly to get Mark Morsley in harness once more with Danny Laws. But with the lure of managing at a higher level Danny decided to take the vacant post at Leiston and Mark was forced to take on the responsibilities as Manager earlier than he had originally intended. This did however give Mark the opportunity to assess the squad particularly the youngsters from the Academy. It is fair to say that he found the quality of the lads excellent and rewarded some of them with contracts with the 1 st Team. This is a great testimony to the hard work put in by Kevin Horlock and the Academy staff. Season 2013 / 2014 saw Needham achieve a number of major achievements for the club most notably reaching the 4 th Qualifying Round of The FA Cup for the first time where we lost 1-0 to Cambridge United in front of a record 1,784 spectators. In the League we managed to clinch 5 th place and a play off spot after winning 7-1 on the last day of the season. However we unfortunately lost the semi-final 1-0 to Witham Town who were eventual play off winners. Season 2014 / 2015 was yet another historic one for the club as the 1 st Team became Ryman League Division 1 North Champions sealing promotion to The Ryman Premier Division for the first time. A season long battle ensued with Harlow Town but the club managed to win the league courtesy of a professional, classy 5-0 victory away to Chatham Town on the final day of the regular season. A first for the club also saw our Reserve Side compete at Step 6 Thurlow Nunn Division 1 for the very first time. Conducting ourselves very well we finished in a respectable 16 th position having won 10 out of 12 points in the last 4 games of the season. The Youth Team had a great run in The FA Youth Cup reaching the 1 st Round Proper for the very first time only to bow our to Stevenage losing 4-3 in a pulsating game. They did however provide more silverware for the club as they won The Thulow Nunn Youth Cup for the first time defeating Histon 3-1 to cap off a brilliant season for the football club. Season 2015 / 2016 saw the 1 st Team competing at Step 3 of The Football League Pyramid for the first time in the Clubs History. Having won the Ryman North Division the previous Season they were now playing in The Ryman League Premier Division, which turned out to be a very hard season compared to the previous one. Survival was the main aim and this was achieved finishing in 20 th position. The Reserve Team struggled in The Thurlow Nunn Division 1 League finishing bottom of the table with the Youth Team finishing in 3 rd place in The Thurlow Nunn Youth League. Disappointingly both FA Competitions Cup & Trophy were exited at the first hurdle but once again the Youth Team had a good run in The FA Youth Cup. The 1 st Teams second Season at Step 3 Season 2016 / 2017 saw them occupy a Play-Off Spot for virtually all of the season leading the table for several weeks along the way. However results towards the end of the season saw them drop out of contention finishing in 9 th place, but this was a great achievement compared to the previous season’s relegation battle. The youngsters in the Reserve Team found life tough again in The Thurlow Nunn Division 1 finishing third from bottom and the Under 18 Youth Teams both finished in 6 th place in their respective leagues (Thurlow Nunn Central Division & Eastern Junior Alliance). Overall the Club is in a very good position both on and off the field with many exciting times ahead for everyone connected and involved with Needham Market FC. Season 2017 / 2018 was an indifferent year for the 1 st Team with too many inconsistent results seeing the side in the bottom half of the table but always clear of the relegation area. The ethos of the Reserve Team was to continue to play youngsters and despite struggling physically at times the football played was very good and often complemented by the opposition. The midweek Under 18 Youth Team finished in mid table but could not finish their league campaign due to such a backlog of fixtures caused by the wet weather. The club increased its Youth section competing in the Eastern Junior Alliance League at U18, U16, U14 & U13 levels with a mixture of league and cup results. Overall the Club is in a very good position with the completion of a New 3G Pitch and currently under construction a purpose built changing room block, toilets, disabled lift access and first floor conference facilities, café and a 3 sided veranda for viewing, a new league for the 1 st Team & Reserve Team for the coming season and a greater extension to the clubs Youth Section and the introduction of ladies teams so many exciting times ahead are ahead for everyone connected and involved with Needham Market FC.

Needham Market Women reach first of two potential finals in first season together

The Market Women have made it to their first cup final – in their first season as a team – after a 2-0 away win against Alresford Colne Rangers in the Suffolk Women’s League Knockout Cup semi-final.

Needham Market have set up a clash with divisional rivals East Bergholt United in the final, having already beaten them last weekend to progress to the semi-final of the Suffolk Women’s Cup.

They also faced them last weekend Away in the League and beat them 3-0 to go top of the table and condemned them to their first league defeat in two seasons!!

Needham Women beat East Bergholt 3-2 in quarter finals of Suffolk Women's Cup 2018/19 season. Freya Louis’ side are in great form ahead of it, and it showed as they overcame their semi-finalists with a clean sheet performance. The first half ended goalless as, although Needham had the majority of possession, Alresford made it difficult to finish in the final third. The first goal came from striker Lois Balfour who tapped it in from a precise cross before Francesca Rainbird won a penalty – converted by Amber Sparkes – after a late slide inside the box. “It wasn’t an easy game,” manager Freya Louis said. “But we had every faith that we would make it into that final. “Week in, week out these girls work their socks off and they deserve to have made it.”

Footballers to study at Needham Market FC thanks to college link-up

The pair signed the deal which will see students from the IpswIch college learn alongside playing football.

The transfer window may now be firmly closed - but a new deal between a college and a football club aims to open up new opportunities for sport lovers who want to gain an education.

Lee Mandley from Suffolk New College and Robert Peace from Needham Market shook on the deal that will bring a new partnership between the organisations. Picture: SUFFOLK NEW COLLEGE

The partnership will see Suffolk New College oversee a BTEC programme at Needham Market Football Club from September 2019.

The contract will give those aged 16 and over the chance to pursue their footballing careers by training at the academy based at Needham Market’s Evo-Stik Southern League’s home ground, Bloomfields - whilst gaining a full-time qualification at the same time.

The course will allow them to choose from a range of subjects to study alongside their football training.

Talks began last year and operations and academy director at the club, Robert Peace, is delighted to get the deal over the line. He said: “I’m very excited and delighted about this link up. For us, it adds something extra to our education provision. “Everyone in the region knows Suffolk New College and the good reputation they have - therefore we are delighted to be partnered with them. “It’s important for us as we want our academy graduates to progress. “Statistics show that the vast majority of prospects won’t make it to professional football so it’s important that everyone who goes through our academy has something to fall back on. “We want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to progress onto a university course or into employment. “Numbers wise, we anticipate offering around 70 to 80 places by year two and we will have regular dialogue with the college to see how this link up can grow.”

Lee Mandley, head of sport and public services at Suffolk New College, said: “We established a positive connection with representatives at Needham Market Football Club last year and the culmination of lots of hard work is this deal. “In my opinion, they are the club that is moving forward rapidly in this county. They are doing great things both on and off the pitch so we are proud to be in partnership with them.”

Currently, the football club has created a golf academy to run alongside the football provision in partnership with Hintlesham Golf Club.

Colchester United Hall of Fame inductee Steve Foley on Layer Road life

Legend - Colchester United Hall of Fame inductee Steve Foley at the Former Players Association dinner. Left to right: Barry Smith, Steve Green (Green Square), Kevin Cain, Terry Sutton (PMS Leashold), Alan Cadman

Steve Foley remembers exactly how much was in his first pay packet as a Colchester United first-team player. But after making his U’s debut as a teenager in 1971, he only ended up keeping half of it. “I think my first wage was £8 a week – and I had to give £4 to my mum,” said the Colchester stalwart, who went on to make more than 300 appearances for the club during a decade of playing at Layer Road.

Foley’s huge contribution to Colchester as both a player and coach was acknowledged at the weekend, after he was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame at the club’s Former Players Association dinner. Having joined the U’s as a 16-year-old apprentice in the summer of 1969, the Clacton-born midfielder did not take long to make his mark. Dick Graham gave him his Colchester first-team debut little more than two years later when they hosted Exeter City – and he made an immediate impression. But while Foley immediately stamped his mark on the game with a two-goal brace, he still has one big regret from that game against the Grecians.

“I made my debut for Colchester when I was 17 and we played Exeter in an evening game,” recalls Foley, who was nicknamed ‘Zora’ during his time at the U’s. “I scored two goals and we were 2-0 up and we got a penalty. “They chucked me the ball and said go and get your hat-trick and I bottled it! “I didn’t take it and the penalty-taker missed it as well. “That was my very first game and my biggest regret. “I owe a lot to Dick Graham who was the manager at the time and also the people who spotted me, as well. “To be fair to Dick, I wouldn’t say he was a great coach but he made you work and if you don’t work in this life, then you don’t get anything. “If you look at the top players now, they work hard – it’s as simple as that.”

Foley went on to score 56 goals over the space of a decade for Colchester between 1971 and 1981 and helped the club win promotion twice in 1974 and 1977. He eventually left the U’s as a player in the summer of 1981 but returned five years later, though, joining the youth team coaching staff as an assistant to boss Roy Massey. Foley went on to serve Colchester as youth-team level as a coach and had three separate spell as caretaker boss of their first team. He took over as youth team boss from Massey and, after a brief stint at Watford, he returned back to Layer Road. Foley later worked for both Norwich City and Ipswich Town in various coaching capacities along with within the local non-league scene – but there is one club that is always closest to his heart. “Having been at Colchester, Norwich and Ipswich, people always ask me who my favourite club is and for me it’s my first love and that’s Colchester,” he said. “Having been born in Clacton many years ago and getting a couple of buses to get to Colchester first thing in the morning, sweeping the terraces, I’d do it all again. “I used to paint the place at Layer Road and cut the pitch and that’s how it was. “I’ve still got all of my contracts. “Colchester’s result is the first I look for. I just want them to win promotion and get on. “I hear some negativity about the stadium not being the same as Layer Road but things move on and that’s life.”

16 Opposition Club History

Over four score years ago, in the summer of 1933, a football team in Tamworth was just a dream for the lovers of the beautiful game who worked together to set up a new club in the town.

The demise of Tamworth Castle FC left the town with no senior level football club, but a campaign involving a town businessman and the local newspaper set the wheels in motion to form another club, and so Tamworth FC was born. The original ground on which the team played was next to the now demolished Jolly Sailor pub, and from 1934 onwards The Lamb became the club’s new home, where they remain to this day.

The club played its early football in the Birmingham Combination, switching to the Birmingham League (now known as the West Midlands League) in the 1950s, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that the club achieved notable success with two league championships and numerous victories in the League Cup, Birmingham Senior Cup and Staffordshire Senior Cup. The club also reached the First Round of the FA Cup on two occasions, and on the second of those occasions they progressed to the Second Round by virtue of a 2-1 victory over Torquay United at The Lamb.

These were good times indeed for Tamworth FC, but it wasn’t to last. Despite gaining entry to the Southern League in 1972, the club’s fortunes went on a dramatic slide as the 1970s proved to be as cruel as the 1960s had been kind. Attendances fell to record low levels; The Lamb fell into disrepair and it became a major effort just to keep the club alive. In 1984, a consortium of local businessmen (including the current Chairman Bob Andrews) took the club over and set about restoring it to its former glory. The club returned to the West Midlands League and gradually found their feet again, eventually winning the Championship in 1988 and regaining their Southern League status after a four years hiatus.

The following season Tamworth progressed to even greater things reaching the final of the FA Vase, and, on May 6 th 1989 in front of a Wembley crowd of 26,487 (the record attendance for the Vase final at the ‘old’ Wembley), they played out a 1-1 draw with Sudbury Town and won the replay at Peterborough four days later 3-0 to give the club, and the town, possibly its finest moment ever.

The Vase triumph did not crystalise into further success though and manager Graham Smith left the club two years later while four managers in four seasons failed to springboard the club until February 1995 when former Birmingham City player Paul Hendrie with instant results. He turned another mediocre season around and guided the Lambs to within a point of promotion then secured the 1996/97 Southern League Midland Division Championship by a 26 point margin.

The next boost came in January 2001, when former European Cup winner Gary Mills was appointed manager and with the club staring relegation squarely in the face his impact was almost as instant as Smith’s. Firstly he guided the side away from the drop, and then masterminded a Championship challenge in the 2001/02 season, which ended in heartbreaking fashion on the final day at Folkstone. Mills left Tamworth, and the club swiftly appointed his assistant Darron Gee into the hot seat.

Gee and the club as a whole started the 2002/03 campaign with a renewed sense of purpose and were rewarded with the Southern League Champions with 3 weeks left of the season. It could have been even better but a storming run to the FA Trophy final, ended in disappointment at Villa Park with defeat to Burscough.

Mark Cooper was then appointed, and fans were rewarded with two fantastic FA Cup runs. The first against Stoke City in 2005-6 was halted by penalty kicks in a replay in the Third Round Proper and a live BBC TV fixture against Championship side Norwich City in 2006-7 ended in defeat. Lack of progress in the league saw ‘Coops’ leave and Mills return soon after and promotion to Conference National was achieved with a game to spare in 2008-09 .

When Mills departed former Nottingham Forest star Des Lyttle, took hold of the reins but with relegation a distinct possibility stepped down with four games to go and the then academy coaches including Vase winner Dale Belford stepped up to help and it went to the wire, but a nervy televised victory ensured survival with 14 minutes of the season remaining.

17 Opposition Club History

Prior to his sad passing in December 2011, long serving Club President Len Gendle predicted the FA Cup victory at Gateshead and The Lambs went on to be narrowly defeated by Premiership side Everton in a 3 rd Round match at as boss rebuilt his squad but found the going increasingly tougher and in early January 2013 assistant Dale Belford was asked to step in as caretaker manager once again and rescue the club from the drop with the highest ever top flight points haul.

Belford continued as permanent boss into the 2013-14 season, although the side was ultimately relegated from the Conference Premier so the successful former Wrexham player manager Andy Morrell and assistant Mike Fowler came to the club, taking them on a World beating 12 game winning run whilst narrowly missing out on the playoffs in in 2014-15 and 2015-16.

During the summer break of 2016 Chairman Bob Andrews oversaw the multi-million pound replacement of The Lamb’s 80+ year old grass pitch with a state of the art artificial 3G surface, one of only a handful of similar surfaces in the top two tiers of the non league pyramid at the time.

It completely changed The Lamb from being a one team venue into a facility for the club’s burgeoning youth and academy sides as well as bringing the community into a popular hub for local football for all abilities across all ages.

Despite the progress being away from the first team, inconsistent results and performances conspired to relieve Morrell of his duties in February 2018. Following relegation to step 3 of the non league pyramid at the end of the season, assistant Fowler took the reins into 2018-19 as Head Coach alongside newly appointed Director of Football, Tim Harris, who had tasted success with home town club Gloucester City and promotion to the Football League with Newport County. However, after defeat in the FA Cup to local rivals Hednesford, Fowler stepped down and Harris steadied the ship for one game until former Boston United ad St Neots Town boss Dennis Greene was appointed on 20 September 2018.

Did you know that there is a football league within the United Kingdom that consists of just two teams?

This league, which is affiliated with the Football Association, exists in the Isles of Scilly..

You have to travel 25 miles out to get to the Isles of Scilly and they only have a total 2,300 people living on them so the pool of players you can pick from for football is already very small. But regardless it hasn’t stopped them starting their own Football League which has been running since the 1920s. Two teams, Garrison Gunners and Woolpack Wanderers both play at Garrison Field, they meet 17 times in the league each season as well as playing an additional 5 games of various cup competitions, so only 22 games per season as much matches. The teams take it in turns to use the home and away dugout at Garrison Field. In terms of the players, the players move between teams each season because at the start of the season, the two captains are chosen, then for example if you’re on a school playground where you have the two captains and you pick the players from the pool. The players names are drawn on pieces of paper, pulled out of hats which make up their teams. The league runs from November to March during the winter months when there is a lot less tourists as the island relies on the tourism to function, it’s a big source of their revenue coming in to the population of those on the Isles of Scilly. The players are older and not the usual 18 to 30 years old as they head to look for better job prospects. It can be difficult to get squads together each season because players come back and forwards, however they still continue to keep going on despite the restrictions. There used to be five teams across different islands but due to players being few and far between, it has to be cut down. It goes to show the spirit of just wanting to play football for the love of the sport, it doesn’t matter what team you’re on, who you’re up against, whether it’s against same players every week, they’re just playing it because they like football, a great thing to see on such a small island. Even though no teams play in the Cornwall leagues (mainly due to cost), they do travel over once a year, a combined team from the two teams play against a team from Penzance in the Lyonesse Cup, which interestingly has the smallest trophy in the world at just 6mm tall (check out what it looks like in the video below). It just shows that this is football totally stripped back of all the money and everything else on top of it, it’s just football for the love of football. It’s quirky, it’s unique, it’s different. Would you like to be playing in a league like this where you know you’ll be playing against the same players each week, you know exactly what’s going to happen, same ground, atmosphere etc, would you get bored of this? Like mentioned earlier in the article, it’s like being back at primary or secondary school where you pick your mates and people you know and want for your side, so surely not, right?!

A Northern Premier League side are considering ending their 35 year stay in English football and switch to the Welsh leagues for next season.

Colwyn Bay have expressed that they are exploring that possibility due to financial struggles, if they don’t then they might end up going bust. Colwyn Bay Football club are to explore a possible return to Welsh football on financial grounds. They are to hold talks with the FA of Wales later this week and will discuss the issue further before making a final decision. Interim chairman Bill Murray told a supporters meeting on Monday that the club needs £100,000 a year more revenue to stay competitive in the English system and with lack of support from the town in terms people coming to games and business investment, that is looking impossible. The club needs home gates of 450 to 500 to stay competitive in England and despite playing some good football this season, they are not getting that sort of support from people in the town. “To carry on as we are will see the club fold inside two years,” he warned. “The club has been kept afloat in recent years by the generous support of David and Brian Titchiner, but they can’t keep bailing the club out.” He told supporters there were three options: – 1 Stay as we are and see the club die. – 2 Stay in England on a drastically reduced budget and slide further down the pyramid. – 3 Start again in local Welsh Football and look to re-build from there to possibly challenge for Welsh Premier status in three or four years.

If the club go for the third option, Craig Hogg and Neil Coverley said they would consider staying with the club providing there was a realistic and feasible plan in place with a view to taking the club forward. As things stand making progress in England is not realistically feasible. The club have been in the English system for over 30 years and got as high as the , but in recent years have not been getting big enough attendances at home games to make it viable. Mr Murray said: “My heart wants to stay in England where we have had some great times, but times have changed and with the current financial situation, my head says return to local Welsh football to try and give the club feasible targets to work towards – otherwise there could be no club at all.” Any resignation from the Evostik League has to be submitted by March 31st, and so the club has four weeks to make a decision.

We’ve seen the first relegation of the season last weekend after Staines Town lost their place in the Southern Football League Premier South Division. They suffered a crushing 7-0 defeat to mid-table Hartley Wintney, which became one of their worst defeats of the season, including a 10-3 defeat to Basingstoke Town. Staines’ record in the league so far has seen them play 33, win 3, draw 0, lose 30, score 35, concede 115 and a total of 9 points.

A group of people each paying £49 to own a Non-League football club and make every decision? For now, you’ll have to file the majority of us under sceptical.

Among the promises on the OWNAFC website, once the decision of which club to takeover has been voted on, subscribers can expect to: Make new signings, hire and fire staff, negotiate contracts, set admission prices, full financial control, select the squad, plan training sessions and make history. Owners will call the shots via an app on their mobile phones. The NLP understands Northern Premier League Premier Division club Hednesford Town – who are up for sale and debt free – are the target with OWNAFC founder Stuart Harvey having already attended games and met officials.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Harvey explains his vision of allowing people to live out their dream of owning a football club and taking the game back to the people. “It replaces the boardroom nonsense we see at many clubs with the people that matter,” he says. There’s nothing wrong with that and a glance across English football’s landscape shows there is a lot to be desired when it comes to some of the ownership of clubs in this county.

The eagle-eyed will point out that an online community taking on a team is essentially an updated version of MyFootballClub, who took over Ebbsfleet United in 2008. Again the promise was the chance to live out the real life version of Football Manager. Membership numbers topped 27,000, initially it saved Fleet and there was an FA Trophy win at Wembley.

But, with no vote on the actual picking of Liam Daish’s team – the big selling point – and perhaps the lack of a star name club, renewals dwindled. Eventually the Kent club were running on empty, bargaining with clubs who had sell-on fees with players, like Stevenage with Michael Bostwick, to bring in quick revenue before they eventually dropped out of Non-League’s top flight in 2013 on the brink of non-existence before being taken over again.

Harvey says it is, “… giving people a second club to grow to love – for the football fan who is out priced in the modern game.” If it is Hednesford, what about their fans? Suddenly the big decisions, all the decisions, are being decided by a majority vote by people who have probably never heard of the Pitmen, despite their illustrious Non-League past.

How much they pay to watch their team, who signs, who doesn’t, and, potentially, who plays can be signed off at the click of a button by somebody on the other side of the world waiting in the queue at McDonalds for a burger. While those who follow football from the top, where anything outside of the Manchester Uniteds, Liverpools, Real Madrids and Barcelonas barely exists, Non-League football maybe does seem a bit inconsequential and somehow less important.

But it matters. These clubs are part of people’s lives. Football at this level isn’t a joke. They may be fewer in numbers, but to supporters those three points on a Saturday mean just as much in the Evo-Stik Premier as they do in the Premier League. For players, what happens on and off the pitch can impact the rest of their career. It’s a responsibility that will hopefully be impressed on any owners should it go through.

Running a football club through a mobile phone isn’t as straightforward as it sounds. There are rules and regulations to be adhered to and if it goes the same way as MyFC, what’s to hold the interest long-term.

Any takeover will have to be passed off by the authorities and you’d hope robust questions are asked and business plans are poured over.

A football club as a plaything will make many people uncomfortable. Maybe it will work and others will follow. As the headline on OWNAFC’s website asks, ‘Do you have what it takes to run a real football club?’ Time will certainly tell.
