Despite moving with the times, they are, however, no longer in the best position to sort out for themselves the many problems that confront them. Corruption, money laundering, match-fixing, misplaced government interven- tion, legal disputes of various sorts, and so on, can, indeed, only be dealt with effectively if authority is clearly defined and if the status and independence of football’s governing bodies is recognised by law and they are provided with the necessary means. The Independent European Sport Review initiated by the sports ministers of the EU’s five key member states in cooperation with UEFA and FIFA is an important step in this direction. Its concludes in favour of sport being accorded a special, independent status and supports the European sport model. -

UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - 2017/18 SEASON MATCH PRESS KITS Östersund Arena - Ostersund Thursday 15 February 2018 19.00CET (19.00 local time) Östersunds FK Round of 32, First leg Arsenal FC Match background 2 Legend 4 1 Östersunds FK - Arsenal FC Thursday 15 February 2018 - 19.00CET (19.00 local time) Match press kit Östersund Arena, Ostersund Match background There is a touch of footballing romance in the air as European debutants Östersund, led by unsung English coach Graham Potter, entertain the Premier League aristocrats of Arsenal in the first leg of the round of 32. • The Swedish side have already played a dozen matches in their maiden European adventure, qualifying as the runners-up of Group J behind Athletic Club – and only on head-to-head records after both amassed 11 points. Arsenal, meanwhile, cruised through their first UEFA Europa League group stage, clinching top spot in Group H with a game to spare. Previous meetings • The two clubs have never met in European competition, and Östersund have yet to face opposition from England. • Arsenal have posted three wins and a draw in their four encounters with Swedish opponents. In each season that they have faced a team from Sweden, they have gone on to reach a European final – and lose it on penalties after a goalless draw. • The Gunners defeated IFK Göteborg 5-1 on aggregate in the 1979/80 European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals en route to losing the final on spot kicks to Valencia in Brussels. Twenty years later they were shoot-out sufferers once again against Galatasaray in Copenhagen in the final of the UEFA Cup, having beaten AIK home (3-1, with Fredrik Ljungberg among the Gunners' scorers) and away (3-2) in the UEFA Champions League first group stage. -

Previous meetings • The sides are meeting for the first time; neither has played a competitive fixture against a team from their opponents' home country. • In 12 UEFA competition fixtures between Italian and Israeli clubs, the Serie A representatives have recorded six wins, three draws and three defeats. Online accreditation 11 Announcements 23 PHOTO: ALBERTO LINGRIA a tasteeditorial of EURO The first European title of the year has just been bestowed on Italy, who won the 3rd European Futsal Championship in a tournament that they also hosted. Next it will be the turn of the youth players in both the men’s (Under-17 and Under-19) and women’s categories (Under-19) to compete for European honours from May to July, when the final rounds of their European champion- ships will be taking place. At senior level, however, the players only have European club competition medals to contend for this year. The national teams are not dormant though. At the end of March, the UEFA EURO 2004 qualifiers move into their criti- cal phase and, come autumn, the 15 teams who will join hosts Portugal in the final round next year will be known. There could be a lot of drama to come. I am happy to report that with UEFA EURO 2004 only 15 months away, preparations are well advanced, and EURO 2004, SA, the joint operation set up by UEFA and the Portuguese Football Federation, is running at full speed. -
