SECURITY CLASSIFICATION ' C ' - CONFIDENTIAL F 0 R C A B I N E T QUEENSLAND WATER RESOURCES COMM ISSION PROPOSED NAME FOR DAM AT LAKE DYER, LOCKYER VALLEY 1. PURPOSE OF SUBMISSION This submission proposes that a dam recently constructed on the site of Lake Dyer near Laidley be named Bill Gunn Dam. 2 • BACKG ROUND a 0 0 The Lockyer Valley is o ne of Queensland's major vegetable 0.... producing areas a nd is dependent on irrigated production on the alluvial soils . Development of the Valley has stressed the available water resources which are mostly derived from underground aquifers. In order to alluviate the situation, a number of recharge weirs have been constructed. An offstream storage has been constructed on the site of the existing Lake Dyer and another offstream storage is proposed at Lake Clarendon. Both storages will be operated in conjunction with the aquifers to improve the availability of irrigation supplies and thus stabilise irrigated production from the area. 3. PROPOSED NAME OF DAM While no change is proposed to the name Lake Dyer, it is proposed that the structure be named Bill Gunn Dam. The Honourable William Angus Manson Gunn is a Member of the Legislative Assembly where he represents the electorate of Somerset. He is currently Deputy Premier, Minister for Public Works, Main Roads and Expo and Minister for Police. On a number of occasions he has acted as Minister for Water Resources and Mari time Services. Prior to his election to the Legislative Assembly, he was a member of the Laidley Shire Council, serving as its Chairman. Mr. Gunn has long displayed an interest in Water Resources, particularly in those of the Lockye r Valley. He has also been a staunch supporter of irrigated agriculture. RECOMMENDATION In view of Mr. Gunn's long and distinguishe d public service to the State of Queensland in general and the Lockyer Valley in particular, it is recommended that the d a m recently constructed near Laidley at Lake Dy e r be named Bill Gunn Dam.
