 Wu and Xu are playing together for the first-time in 2009.  Wu and Xu last event together prior to this week’s Sanya Openwas at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games where they place ninth after being eliminated 21-15 and 21-18 in 41 minutes by David Klemperer and Eric Koreng of Germany.  Wu and Xu are the only Chinese men’s team to medal on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour since the start of the international circuit in 1987.  Wu and Xu are the only Chinese men’s team to play in a SWATCH gold medal match with five appearances together in 2008 in Australia, China, Croatia, Russia and France.  Wu and Xu claimed China’sfirst-ever men’s medal by capturing the bronze at the 2006 Poland stop with a third-place win over Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes of Brazil.  Wu and Xu rank 28th on the all-time FIVB earnings list with $426,850.  For their FIVB careers, Wu is competing in his 57th SWATCH stop with $221,950 in earnings to rank 62nd.  Xu is playing in his 66th international event with $242,600 in winnings to rank 56 all-time.  Xu tied with Russia’s Dmitri Barsouk as the SWATCH FIVB World Tour’smost improved players in 2007.  Xu and Jialu Li placed fourth in the 2008 Sanya Open after losing to teams from Brazil and Argentina in the “final four” matches.  Bogatov and Prokopiev are playing together on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour for the first-time in 2009.  Bogatov and Prokopiev played in the 2006 SWATCH-FIVB Junior World Championships for players under the age of 21 in Myslowice, Poland. The Russians split four matches to place ninth where they were eliminated by the Ingrosso twices (Matteo and Paolo) of Italy.  Bogatov and Prokopiev competed together in the European Championships last month in Sochi, Russia. The Russians lost all three of their pool play matches, including a three-setter to Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira of Spain in 51 minutes (18-21, 21-18, 14-16).  Prokopiev placed third in the 2005 SWATCH-FIVB Junior World Championships in Rio de Janeiro with Yaroslav Koshkarev.  Prior to a guaranteed fourth-place this week, the best previous SWATCH FIVB World Tour finishes for Bogatov and Prokopiev have been ninths.  Bogatov and Prokopiev’s best previous SWATCH FIVB World Tour placement was ninth this season at July’s Russian Grand Slam in Moscow where the Russians also dropped a pool play match to Herrera and Gavira (19- 21, 17-21, 42 minutes).
