TOORAWEENAH & EGLINTON TENNIS CLUBS

We welcome new members from the Tooraweenah Tennis Club into our Seniors Group. A very keen group of players travel from Quambone, Gilgandra, Coonabarabran, and surrounding districts to play at Tooraweenah Tennis Complex which is comprised of 3 courts and a comfortable Clubhouse. These new members always attend the Dubbo Tournament as well as many Team Events in Western NSW.

At the Bathurst Teams’ tournament we also claimed a handful of members from Eglinton, near Bathurst. We are hoping that all these new members will be able to participate in new initiatives we are planning to involve more of our members in various playing opportunities around the state.

Four days of clear sunshine enabled all events to be concluded in this year’s Merimbula Seniors’ Tournament after rain marred last year’s final day. Entries were down a little on last year’s event, however a change in format meant that all players could compete on all four days. Day one as usual was the Mixed events with two cards in the 65 and 70 year old sections. On Tuesday, regular Pam Crawford from Tumut paired with former world champion Helen Worland from Orange to win their card in the 45/55 Ladies Doubles but they lost the final to the Victorian pair of Sue Walter and Judy Buzza. NSW Tennis Seniors Secretary Robyn Castle from played with former world champion squash player Heather McKay of to win their card in the 65 Ladies Doubles before going down to Jenny Grose from Shepparton and Denise Martin from Sydney. Arthur Olsen and Daphne On Wednesday the 10 year events were played with locals Dennis Love and Kennedy winners 70XD John Rheinberger taking out the two-card 40/60 Men’s Doubles from Frank Marris and Terry Walker of Canberra. The 70 Men’s doubles had six pairs playing, and the strong Canberra pair of David Coutts and David Sprott dominated the event with the maximum 30 games. Arthur Olsen and Ken Smith were only three games behind the winners but lost their match to the two Davids 3-6. In the 40/50 Ladies doubles two pairs ended on 29 games. Susan Roche and Kaye Savory won the event on a count back after they had beaten Judy Buzza and Denise Martin in their round 6-5. A close one! Jenny Grose and Sue Walter beat Pam Crawford and Helen Worland in the two- card 60 Ladies’ Doubles played at the Bega courts. Two cards were also necessary for the 70 Ladies’ doubles with Heather McKay and Judy Logan from Wagga defeating Joyce Rogers and June Simpson from Melbourne 6-5 in an exciting playoff. Foster Ofati and This year the combined age doubles were played on the Thursday which Carol Drucza provided the largest number of matches for the week. Bob Warren and John Rheinberger won the 100/110 doubles followed by James Poso the youngest and Bob Meek the oldest competitors from the Merimbula club in second spot. The 120/130 Men’s Combined doubles was played in very windy conditions on five courts at Bega in the afternoon with David Herring and John Mansfield being too strong for Rob Hughes and Len Little in the two-card event. Former Bega resident of 50 years ago Peter Kilborn teamed with Peter Musgrove to win the 140 Men’s Combined without dropping a set. The gentlemen of tennis played the 150 Men’s Combined with Barrie Arnold from Sydney and Roy Scholz of Albury defeating former greats Bob McWhinnie of Wollongong and double knee replacement Garry Potter 8-6 in their round to win the event. Pam Crawford and Helen Worland had revenge over Jenny Grose and Sue Walter when they met in the final of the 100/120 Ladies’ Combined winning the playoff six games to five, in what can only be described as a “nail biter” – and very challenging in the wind!. The final event of the doubles saw Judy Buzza and June Simpson defeat Sue Johnston and Joyce Rogers to win the 130 Ladies’ Combined. All singles events were played at Merimbula each morning in brilliant sunshine at 8am and 9am. Merimbula’s coach, James Poso defeated Bob Warren 6-2 6-2 to win the 35-45 Men’s Singles - he says he’ll be back to do it again next year! Len Little defeated Terry McLean 7-6 6-2 in the 55-65 event while John Mansfield won the 70/75 Singles from David Herring. Helen Worland was too strong for Sue Walter in the 35/65 Ladies’ singles while June Simpson won the 70/75 event. Merimbula Club wishes to thank the Seniors for their great support of the Sunday afternoon function, Trivia Night at the Club and for patronising the Kitchen for lunch and teas.
