DISCLAIMER

The Life-Line Bulletin, published monthly by the International Service Office of Gamblers Anonymous, 4981 Irwindale Ave., #700, Irwindale, California 91706, is a newsletter for and about members of Gamblers Anonymous. Opinions expressed herein are not to be attributed to Gamblers Anonymous as a whole nor does the publication of any article imply any endorsement by Gamblers Anonymous as a whole. Any manuscript or other material submitted to Gamblers Anonymous for consideration to be published in the Life-Line Bulletin cannot be returned. No portion of any Life-Line Bulletin may be used or reprinted without the express written permission of our International Service Office.

GAMBLING , for the compulsive gambler is defined as follows: any betting or wagering, for self or others, whether for money or not, no matter how slight or insignificant, where the outcome is uncertain or depends upon chance or “skill” constitutes gambling. From Your International Executive Secretary

I would like to share some pertinent information with the Fellowship during these extremely difficult times.

First of all, with the outbreak of the Covid-19 (coronavirus) and the “Stay at Home Order” by California’s Governor to close all non-essential businesses (including Non-Profits) in the state of California by midnight, March 19, 2020 the Gamblers Anonymous International Service Office is temporarily closed. All employees are currently working from their homes, trying our best to keep things running as smoothly as possible. The following are some things that are being done:

The International Directory is being updated on a continuous basis. If you have not done so, please email [email protected] with any changes/updates.

All messages left by calling the Gamblers Anonymous telephone number (626) 960-3500, are being answered daily. The (213) 386-8789 phone number that Gamblers Anonymous had for many years, was disconnected in order to save money, as our (626) number has been in effect since our move over 8 years ago.

All mail is being picked up and receipts are being processed on handwritten receipts. Since QuickBooks is on our Desktop computers, we can continue banking and when we return to the Office, we will input everything into QuickBooks at that time.

And speaking of mail, after more than 62 years, the time has come to say “goodbye” to our P.O. Box 17173, , CA 90017. We closed the P.O. Box on March 23 rd and all mail will be forwarded and delivered to our physical Office address at:

Gamblers Anonymous International Service Office 4981 Irwindale Avenue #700 Irwindale, CA 91706

We started changing over a few months ago, and have been receiving mail at the above address.

As many of you know, the International Conference and Trustees Meeting that was to be held in Seattle, Washington, April 24 – 26, 2020, had to be cancelled. I would personally like to THANK the Seattle Conference Committee for all of their hard work during this difficult time.

1 I’m sure I have forgotten some other “pertinent information” and if you can think of something or have any questions, please email me at karenh@gamblers- anonymous.org or leave a voice message with your phone number and I will do my best to get back to you in a timely manner.

Be safe, take care of yourselves and your families, and know that we are all in this together and our G.A. meetings will come back stronger than ever!

Love to all, Karen H.

P.S. I have asked David M. to submit something for this issue of the Bulletin, which follows. Thanks David!

IT’S SOMETIMES HARD TO FIND THE GOOD IN ALL THE TURMOIL

I am writing this on behalf of 9 very dedicated people, who equally participate in this miracle type of event. I’m speaking about the Gamblers Anonymous approved Telephone Conference Call System. Around the 15th of March, it became apparent that most, if not all, G.A. physical meetings were going to be closed due to the Corona virus. It was then that the Telephone Conference Call Committee mobilized to go from 1 meeting on a Wednesday evening to what is now 8 meetings a week. This was done as a stopgap for people to stay connected with the program. So with the best of intentions by the committee to help our brothers and sisters during this challenging time, we have found a fountain of wonders. The calls that come in every day have been from all across the country. The predominant statement from the callers is how they are so grateful to be able to connect with everyone and their therapies. The meetings have been expanded to 2 hours, and still we do not have the ability to allocate time for everyone to speak. We also notice that there are many members who make nearly every meeting during the course of the week. The time for each meeting is 9PM ET every night of the week, but the phone numbers and meeting IDs are different for every meeting. (Please see pages 3 and 4.)

Ordinarily, I would end with what I have written above, but I will do the Steve Jobs thing - “But wait, there’s more.”

Although the telephone conference call platform recently celebrated its 6th year of operation, the single meeting that was in place on Wednesday, was viewed upon as just an extra meeting to augment physical meetings. It is only because of the turmoil created by the Corona Virus that there has been a significant uptick in the amount of interest in creating more times for telephone conference call meetings. That led to the additional 6 meetings held at 9PM ET and an additional meeting at 3PM ET on Friday. But it gets better, because a new meeting will be starting Wednesday, April 1st. This one will be the first G.A. approved Spanish speaking meeting. The team of admins that have pulled this new meeting together, have a 2nd such meeting in the works, due for Saturday, but that is not

2 yet official. There are also 3 G.A. approved meetings out of , and a new meeting is being cultivated for Latvia. There are 168 hours in the week. There is still room if people want to start a meeting with any specialty, language is not the only limitation.

Finally, a quick word about why these meetings are not being held on other well-known conference calling platforms - the simple answer is to preserve anonymity. Yes, these hi-tech systems have lots of glitzy features, but everyone who calls those non-G.A. approved meetings are putting their personal information and life in the hands of others. The Telephone Conference Call committee has always and will continue to take all the necessary precautions to protect the members who call into the platform from any breach of personal information, because anonymity is not a choice. It is a mandate of the Gamblers Anonymous program.

The committee will provide updates when any G.A. approved telephone conference call meetings get added to the system. If you are looking for that information, you will find them on the Trustee website. The address is trusteewebsite.com . Below is the current information effective March 30, 2020.

Cheerfully submitted on behalf of the committee,

David M. - New Jersey

HELP IS AVAILABLE!

On page 17, item #7: “We encourage everyone in Gamblers Anonymous to have a Pressure Relief Group Meeting ...”

Any member desiring individual assistance with his/her Pressure Relief, please contact John R. at [email protected] . He will reply by email or phone if you provide your number.

6 TWELVE STEPS OF UNITY

Unity – Something that is complete within itself, with a oneness of purpose of thought and spirit.

For the compulsive gambler who walks through the door, out of a want and need to stop gambling, and with a desire to become a member of Gamblers Anonymous, it often seems to be a tremendous task simply to stop gambling and restore oneself to a normal way of thinking and living. In the beginning there is an understanding confusion of the mind and the normal impatience. We try to open our minds to share with others who have experienced the first steps of recovery.

The new member often blocks out any discussion of the Unity Program for a period of time, and even those members who have abstained from gambling for longer periods often avoid or put aside the need for discussion and the acceptance of the Unity Program for any number of reasons, but the truth of the matter is the great need for an understanding of the progress of our recovery, made possible by the tools that are available to us as contained in the Steps of Unity.

The Gamblers Anonymous Unity Program is a framework for the well-being of individual groups and the Fellowship as a whole. The Unity Program is outlined in Twelve Steps and is meant to insure the continuity and perpetuity of Gamblers Anonymous.

In order to maintain the Fellowship for present and future members, both individuals and groups follow the proven concepts upon which the Unity Program is based. The essence of this program is in the preservation of common welfare, members understand that what is best for the group is best for each individual.

The Unity Program serves to protect the Fellowship from disruption. Members work together under the principles of unity in order to preserve and perpetuate the opportunity for themselves and other compulsive gamblers to recover and grow within the Fellowship.

STEP 3

The only requirement for Gamblers Anonymous membership is a desire to stop gambling.

Regardless of who a person is, or how grave their emotional, legal or financial complications may be, Gamblers Anonymous welcomes anyone who demonstrates a desire to stop gambling.

7 For membership it is not necessary that one pay dues or sign a pledge. Those who have returned to gambling are especially encouraged to attend meetings and get help because it is the desire to stop gambling – not the abstinence – that is required for membership.

Expressing a desire to stop gambling doesn’t always mean that the member can overcome the strong urge to gamble, but nevertheless, it is the desire that is the requirement.

A Lifeliner is a member of the G.A. fellowship who cares enough about the financial well being of G.A. to make a monthly donation. This donation helps to insure that G.A. will always be there for the compulsive gambler who still suffers.

You will benefit by becoming a Lifeliner because...

... it offers you a way to give back to the program that has given you so much.

... it allows you to make a commitment to the program in a more direct way.

... it helps the International Service Office to spread the message to those who haven’t yet been blessed as you have.

... it makes you one of a special group of people who do a little extra for the program that saved their lives.

... it gives you a sense of responsibility.

... it helps you remember that Gamblers Anonymous needs you as much as you need Gamblers Anonymous.

We are self supporting through our own contributions.

How often have you thought or heard: “Gamblers Anonymous saved my life. I can’t do enough to repay the program for what it has done for me.”

One of the ways you can give is by becoming a Lifeliner. Simply fill out the bottom of this flyer and send it to I.S.O. with your personal monthly tax deductible contribution and you will receive a receipt by return mail along with an envelope for your next month’s contribution. It’s that easy!!
