Batish draws on listeners' familiarity with the styles and technology of Western music and augments this with hissitar and some African-sounding rhythms. The juxtaposition works well and is easily palatable; Batish often creates a dialogue between the sitar and rock guitar leads, all carried along by an electronic drum machine. Special guests for this performance will be Musical Janitors, who offer their own unique blend of music. Doug .Martsch and Wayne Flower (Tree People) are the Janitors, a fine representation of the Boise local color. Where punk meets folk, cut through the genius and you'll find Musical Janitors. The SPB and Electric Grapevine Productions-sponsored show will start at 8:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $8.50 at the Record Exchange, Spike's and' the Union Station. Students can get discounted advance tickets for $6.50 t the Union Station. Tickets will be $10 at the door. U2’S CREATIVE PROCESS: SKETCHING IN SOUND K. Paul Harris A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music Chapel Hill 2006 Approved by : Advisor: John Covach Reader: Allen Anderson Reader: David Garcia Reader: Jocelyn Neal Reader: Severine Neff © 2006 K. Paul Harris ALL RIGHTS RES ERVED ii ABSTRACT K. PAUL HARRIS: U2’s Creative Process: Sketching in Sound (Under the direction of John Covach) The music of Irish rock band, U2, evinces a compositional process developed by musicians of exceptional inexperience who underwent an equally exceptional insular development, to become one of the most critically acclaimed rock bands of all time. This dissertation uses a variety of resources —principally demos of mature songs from U2’s seventh studio album, Achtung Baby (1991), recordings of earl y performances surrounding the recording of their debut album, Boy (1980), and video documentary sources chronicling the recording of songs from The Unforgettable Fire (1984) and The Joshua Tree (1987) —as a comparative basis for an assessment of U2’s signa ture musical style, their aesthetic of song, and their use of the recording studio in the realization and development of that aesthetic. U2 arose from the post -punk milieu of the late 1970s, that took its lead from the slightly older punks, (the Sex Pisto ls and t he Clash ), to forge a style distinct from mainstream pop. The members of U2 had widely divergent musical tastes and abilities (some bordering on no ability at all) which compelled them to begin writing their own music from the outset, typically th rough interminable rehearsal —a form of live sketching.

Roy Orbison écrit sa première chanson "A Vow of Love". Dès ses 8 ans, il chante dans les radios locales. Albinos, presque aveugle de naissance, il souffrira par la suite de presbytie, de strabisme et d'hypermétropie.

CRUSH ON YOU Written by Shea Mayo Sydney Blanke Fourth Wall Management “Row, row, row your boat, Gently down the stream. Throw the boys overboard And listen to them scream.” Nursery Rhyme “It's my right to be hellish I still get jealous” Nick Jonas EXT. THE WOODS - NIGHT A clearing in the woods. Moonlight sifts through treetops, soft and ethereal. A puffy little owl hoots. And are those... flower petals softly falling like snow? Is it just me, or are these woods prettier than your average woods? It’s like a Victorian fairy painting on a greeting card in a New Age bookstore. A barefoot young woman in pajamas, BRIDGET (19, looking like the girl in the fairy painting) tiptoes through the woods. POV BEHIND A TREE: Someone, or something, watches Bridget step into the clearing, unseen... The unseen figure slowly approaches Bridget from behind... Stepping closer, and closer, and closer, until -- Bridget whips around, startled. She stares up at the unseen figure, still shrouded in darkness, despite the moonlight. BRIDGET You scared me. The dark figure takes another step forward. Bridget steps back. The figure steps forward, she steps back. She keeps backing away until she’s backed right up against a tree. Bridget’s breathing is rapid, she’s trembling, transfixed, terrified, or, actually, wait a sec... turned on? Let’s go with the latter, because suddenly, Bridget and the dark figure -- MAKE OUT AGAINST THE TREE. HOT. HEAVY. FAIRYTALE SEX FOREST. After several intense beats, Bridget pulls away. The dark figure whispers something in her ear, and she smiles.

“Oh, Pretty Woman”—Roy Orbison (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2007 Essay by Cary O’Dell Roy Orbison Original label Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” (often erroneously referred to as just “Pretty Woman”) was recorded in 1964 and was added to the National Registry in 2007. It was written by Orbison and his long-time co-writer Bill Dees. (Previously, the duo had partnered on Orbison’s hit “It’s Over.”) Orbison would recall about the song’s formation: We’d just begun about six in the evening. What you do is play anything that comes to mind, and my wife wanted to go to town to get something. I said, “Do you need any money?” And Bill Dees said, “Pretty woman never needs any money.” Then he said, “Would that make a great song title?” I said, “No, but ‘Petty Woman’ would.” So I started playing the guitar and he was slapping the table for drums. That was the conception, and by the time she got back—which was about 40 minutes—we had the song. “The song,” released on the Monument label, would become one of the most enduring and timeless hits in rock and popular music. Its melody is immediately recognizable, its bass line and driving drum beat completely infectious. A bone fide classic, “Oh, Pretty Woman” has enjoyed the legacy of a classic song—it has been covered, parodied, saluted and sampled. Still, nothing quite compares to the original. The musicianship of the first recording—featuring guitar players Billy Sanford, Jerry Kennedy and Wayne Moss—is flawless, polished to a fine sheen.
