ABSTRACT Family Asteraceae is considered one of the largest medicinally important families which includes valuable members economically and therapeutically. Secondary metabolites mainly flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones, triterpenoids besides volatile oils are among the active principles reported in this family. Concerning the genus Felicia , no enough data is available in literature about it's phytoconstituents, in spite of its common traditional use in several areas of the world especially South Africa. The aim of the review is to provide collective and updated information about this genus including its taxonomy, description, active principles, ethno-pharmacology and pharmacological uses. We mainly aim to encourage researchers to discover this genus, particularly those species whose phytoconstituents and biological activities have not been explored until now. MADRE DE CACAO (Surinam); ACACIA DES ANTILLES (French Guiana). Tree to 9 m; branches hairy when young; poisonous. Leaves with 4-8 pairs of leaflets; leaflets elliptical, acuminate, often dark-spotted or -blotched beneath, to 7 x 3 (-4) cm. Inflorescence to 15 cm. Petals pale purplish-pink, c.1.2 cm; standard petal marked with yellow from middle to base. Fruit narrowly oblong, somewhat woody, to 15 x 1.2 cm; seeds up to 11 per fruit. Range: Mexico to South America. Grown as an ornamental in the Botanic Gardens, Georgetown, Guyana (Index Seminum, 1982) and in French Guiana (de Granville, 1985). Grown as a shade tree in Surinam (Ostendorf, 1962). In tropical America this species is often interplanted with coffee and cacao trees to shade them; it is recommended for intensified utilization as a fuelwood for the humid tropics (National Academy of Sciences, 1980; Little, 1983). 9. Pterocarpus Jacquin Unarmed, nearly evergreen trees, sometimes lianas. Leaves alternate, petiolate, odd- pinnate, 1-pinnate; leaflets alternate. Inflorescence an axillary or terminal panicle or raceme. Flowers papilionaceous; sepals united in an unequally 5-toothed tube; standard and wing petals crisped (wavy); keel petals free or nearly so. -

L. borealis commonly grows in taiga and tundra. In some countries in Europe, including Poland, twinflower is protected as a glacial relict. Chemical composition of this species is not well known, however in folk medicine of Scandinavian countries, L. borealis has a long tradition as a cure for skin diseases and rheumatism. It is suggested that twinflower has potential medicinal properties. The new study on lead secondary metabolites responsible for biological activity are necessary. This short review summarizes very sparse knowledge on twinflower: its biology, distribution, conservation status, chemical constituents, and describes the role of this plant in folk tradition of Scandinavian countries. Pollinating Flies (Diptera): A major contribution to plant diversity and agricultural production Axel Ssymank', C.A. Kearns2, Thomas Pape 3 andF. Christian Thompson 4 Abstract. Diptera are one of the three largest and most diverse animal groups in the world. As an often neglected but important group of pollinators, they play a significant role in agrobiodiversity and the biodiversity of plants everywhere. Flies are present in almost all habitats and biomes and for many medicinal, food and ornamental plants, pollinating flies guarantee or enhance seed and fruit production. They are important in the natural landscape, in agriculture and in greenhouses, and have recently come into use in the production of seeds for seed banks. The Sao Paulo Pollinator Initiative, the CBD, and Pollinator secretariats were important starting points in the international recognition of pollinator importance. However, large gaps in our knowledge of the role of Diptera in pollination networks need to be addressed in order to sustain agriculture and to enable appropriate responses to climate change. At this 9th Conference of the Parties we would like to draw attention to the role of often-neglected Dipteran pollinators, to stress their current importance and potential future, use as pollinators in agriculture. A case study on flower flies that act as important pollinators, as adults, and major biocontrol agents, as larvae, illustrates their double importance for agriculture. Keywords. Manning National Botanical Institute, Kirstenbosch, Private Bag X7, Claremont, 7735 Republic of South Africa Received 4 December 1991; revised 21 May 1992 Circumscription of Lapeirousia corymbosa, type species of subgenus Paniculata section Fastigiata, previously regarded as comprising three subspecies, is restricted to plants with small blue (or white) flowers with symmetrical white' markings, and usually symmetrically disposed stamens. Subsp. fastigiata is elevated to species rank as L. fastigiata, and comprises plants with large yellow, actinomorphic flowers. Lapeirousia azurea, until now included in subsp. fastigiata, is treated as a separate species for plants with large dark blue, zygomorphic, and typically resupinate flowers. Field studies indicate that L. corymbosa subsp. alta is a distinct species, here described as L. neglecta. Floral morphology differs consistently in each species, as do aspects of leaf, capsule and seed morphology. Comparison of seeds in the two sections of subgenus Paniculata shows that species of section Fastigiata are derived in their smaller, reticulate (to rugose), ovoid seeds with a large funicular appendage. Seeds of section Paniculata accord closely with those of the presumed outgroup, Savannosiphon: they are comparatively large, smooth to rugulose and have a small appendage. Lapeirousia neglecta has seeds and chromosome morphology characteristic of section Paniculata, and it is now assigned to that section. The addition of L. -
