Received 25 February, 2019; Accepted August 5, 2019 Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is one of the commonest infectious disease in pregnancy, and in pregnancy we have very limited number of antibiotics to treat the UTI. This study was conducted on 151 patients who attended the gynecology clinic during the study period. Nineteen UTI proven cases of UTI were studied for prevalence of microorganism and sensitivity pattern against different antibiotics. Among the bacteria isolated, Escherichia coli (73.68%) and Staphylococcus aureus (10.52%) were the most prevalent Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria respectively. To know the resistance pattern of microorganism we used commercially available discs of different antibiotics. Gram negative bacteria showed more resistance as compared to Gram positive one. It is observed that the most effective antibiotic for Gram negative isolates is Ceftriaxone (87.5%), followed by Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid (81.25%), Amikacin (75%), Cefuroxime (75%), Cefixime (68.75%) and Mezlocillin (62.5%). For the Gram positive bacteria, Ceftriaxone, Amikacin and Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid were the most effective antimicrobials (100%). -

Recently,the emergence of carbapenem resistance strains are constantly being reported and a growing source of concern for pediatricians. Case presentation: We reported 4 cases of neonatal septicemia caused by Raoultella planticola. Their gestational age was 211 to 269 days, and their birth weight was 1490 to 3000 g.The R. planticola infections were detected on the 9th to 27th day after hospitalizationandoccuredbetweenMayandJune.They clinically manifested as poor mental response, recurrent cyanosis, apnea, decreased heart rate and blood oxygen, recurrent jaundice, fever or nonelevation of body temperature. The C-reactive protein and procalcitonin were elevated at significantly in the initial phase of the infection,and they had leukocytosis or leukopenia. Prior to R.planticola infection,all of them recevied at least one broad-spectrum antibiotic for 7- 27d.All the R.planticola strains detected were only sensitive to amikacin, but resistant to other groups of drugs: cephalosporins (such as cefazolin, ceftetan,etc) and penicillins (such as ampicillin-sulbactam,piperacillin, etc),and even developed resistance to carbapenem. All the infants were clinically cured and discharged with overall good prognosis. Conclusion: Neonatal septicemia caused by Raoultella planticola mostly occured in hot and humid summer, which lack specific clinical manifestations. -

234 NEW METHODS FOR PATHOGENS : A REVLEW DANIEL Y. C. FUNG The Pennsylvania State University Intr ductioii Interests in new methods for identification of bacterial pathogens have increased greatly in recent years due to the awareness of, the need for, and the potential of rapid methods and automation in Micro- biology. In 1971 a report by the U .So National Institute of General Medical Sciences presented the status of mechanization and automation in the clinical laboratory; autcnnation in microbiology was one of the topics reviewed (Kinney, 19-71). Richardson (1972) summttrized the developments of automation in the dairy Laboratories. These topics have been discussed in detail in the International Symposium on Rapid Methods and Automation in Microbiology first held L~IStockholm, Sweden, 1973, and again in Cambridge University, England, 1976. Another symposium was held in Kiel, Germny, 1974 with the title Automation of Microbio1ogr;ical Food Analysis. TheIn proceedings of the First International Symposium were published in two volumes : Automation in Microbiology and Innrmnolom (Heden and Illeni, 1975a) and New Approaches to the Identification of Microorganisms (Heden and Illeni, 1975b). The purpose of this article is to summarize the highlights of some automated microbiological tests and rapid methods relevant to the food industry. Hopefully some of these methods could be adapted and used routinely by the food industry. New Approaches and Automation in Microbioloa Generally the approach to developing new nethods for pathogens involved either a search for new ideas and related instrument develop- ment or improvement of existing bacteriological methods. The impetus for the development of new ideas and instruments mbly comes from clinical needs for rapid detection of organisms and antibiotic sensitivity testing. -

Mackenzie4, Klaus Pfefer4 and Dieter Häussinger2,3 Abstract Background: Raoultella are Gram-negative rod-shaped aerobic bacteria which grow in water and soil. They mostly cause nosocomial infections associated with surgical procedures. This case study is the frst report of a Raoultella infec- tion in Africa. Case presentation We report a case of a surgical site infection (SSI) caused by Raoultella planticola which developed after caesarean sec- tion (CS) and surgery for secondary small bowel obstruction. The patient became febrile with neutrophilia (19,157/µL) 4 days after laparotomy and started to develop clinical signs of a SSI on the 8 th day after laparotomy. The patient con- tinued to be febrile and became critically ill despite empirical treatment with ceftriaxone and vancomycin. Raoultella species with extended antimicrobial resistance (AMR) carrying the CTX-M-9 β-lactamase was isolated from the wound discharge. Considering the antimicrobial susceptibility test, ceftriaxone was replaced by ceftazidime. The patient recovered and could be discharged on day 29 after CS. Conclusions: Raoultella planticola was isolated from an infected surgical site after repeated abdominal surgery. Due to the infection the patient’s stay in the hospital was prolonged for a total of 4 weeks. It is noted that patients under- going surgical and prolonged inpatient treatment are at risk for infections caused by Raoultella. -

The study aims to investigate the disper- sion of plasmid-mediated antibiotic-resistant E. coli from six rivers in Sarawak and two aquaculture farms in Borneo. Methods: A total of 74 water samples were collected for the determination of their bacteria colony count. An IMViC test identified 31 E. coli isolates and tested their susceptibility against twelve clinically important antibiotics. The extraction of plasmid DNA was done using alkali lysis SDS procedures. Characteristics, including plasmid copy number, molecular weight size, resistance rate and multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR), were assessed. Results: Our findings revealed that bacterial counts in rivers and aquaculture farms ranged from log 2.00 to 3.68 CFU/mL and log 1.70 to 5.48 cfu/mL, respectively. Resistance to piperacillin (100%) was observed in all E. coli; resistance to amoxicillin (100%) and ampicillin (100%) was observed in E. -
