After partition many families came from the then East Pakistan and settled in the Sealdah Railway Station area and its neighbourhood. It became necessary to open a branch for women at the nearest college. The girls had to take up jobs during the afternoons to maintain their families. So our college with its morning timings came into existence. Our college, together with all its sister colleges was housed in the same building at 24/2 Mahatma Gandhi Road, Kolkata- 700 009. Originally, Surendranath College was known as Ripon College. It had been named after the Viceroy, Lord Ripon. After independence it was named after its founder, the eminent Congress leader Surendranath Banerjee, nicknamed “Surrender Not” for his fiery anti-British attitude. The College shifted to its own premises at 24, Mahatma Gandhi Road and classes began there from 1997. This building is next door to the main one and used to be the Ripon hostel. 1.4 Mission Our college, having already completed its Diamond Jubilee, has a proud tradition of imparting education, which is morally correct and socially relevant. Students of our College come from a varied background. Many of them are from economically challenged backgrounds. It is our aim to help them become graduates, be self- reliant, become employable, become good human beings and sincere citizens of India. Over the years we have become one of the premier colleges of Central Kolkata.
