Pastor Gallups, I know that you are a big promoter of sexual purity before marriage. But, the truth is that many young people will engage in sexual activity inspite of what you or I tell them. Be hon- est, now. If you KNEW a person was going to have premarital sex no matter what you told them, wouldn’t you encourage them to use a condom and be as safe as possible? - S. I. Milton

Dear S.I., Thank you for your question. Here is the real truth. Many young people, in fact MOST young people, do NOT engage in premarital sex. The most recent statistics show that teenage sexual activity before marriage is actually on the decline! Of course, as you pointed out, there are some that will seriously jeopardize their life and future no mat- ter what facts they are presented with. No, I would not recommend that a person use a condom or any other of the “safe sex” lies, even if I KNEW FOR SURE they were going to have sex anyway. Why? Because the use of condoms is NOT a safeguard against sexually transmitted dis- ease. There is a 16% failure rate of condoms in prevent- ing pregnancy alone. A woman can only get preg- nant a few days a month. What do you think is the failure rate of a condom preventing an STD when you can contract one of these 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year? Many medical experts estimate the failure rate of condoms for pre- venting STDs and even AIDS is over 50%! If my child were going to jump out of an airplane with a parachute and if I KNEW that parachutes would not open at least 50% of the time, I would not tell him to just “pull it a little tighter, be safe and have a good time.” No, I would beg him, plead with him and do everything with in my power to encourage him NOT to jump. Of course some peo- ple will “jump” anyway. When we conduct our lives, God’s way, especially in the area of our sexuality - we invite all the bless- ings of life and the Lord Jesus into our lives and relationships. THAT is what I want for my loved ones! How about you?
