FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT® FOR HEALTHY LIVING FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

THE HARRISBURG AREA YMCA 2012 Annual Report A place to Learn, Grow, Thrive. ThERE IS NO ORGANization Quite Like the YMCA.

That’s because in many neighborhoods across our service area, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change. We work tirelessly every day to nurture the potential of kids, improve the community’s health and well- being, and give back and support our neighbors.

We recognize for communities to succeed, everyone must be given the opportunity to be healthy, confident, connected and secure. To that end, last year we gave away more than $3.8 million in financial assistance and subsidized programs and services to ensure that 18,786 of our neighbors, regardless of age, income or background, had the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

Our sights are set on the future. The Board of Directors has worked hard on a new strategic plan that will increase our impact on our community and the furtherance of our mission. At the Y, we’re not simply changing the lives of people in our community today. We are building an entire legacy of change. One that will shape the future of generations to come.

And we couldn’t do it without the hard work and generous support of our partners, volunteers, donors, staff and members. Thank you for playing a part in building the foundations of community in the greater Harrisburg Area. Please enjoy our 2012 Annual Report.

Yours in Service,

Mark G. Caldwell Richard A. Curl Chairman of the Board President & CEO

“The summer of 2012 was the first experience for my daughters and I with the YMCA Summer Camp program. I took my daughters to the program located at Mountainview Elementary. Since they are 10 and 8 years old, they were assigned to different groups. The summer camp program allowed my girls to enjoy all sorts of different fun activities and make all sorts of new friends and allowed me to work an always-changing schedule. It meant a lot to me to be able to provide my children with a fun place to spend their summer while I was working. Under the watchful eyes and creative mind of the Director of the camp, my girls enjoyed such fun and varied activities as dance contests, makeovers, swimming (my older girl even passed the deep water test), and field trips to Lake Tobias Wildlife Park and an ice skating rink. They even had time set aside to (gasp) read. My girls had fun at the camp and I fully intend to enroll them in the future.” - Mark Greenwald

“I have included a life insurance policy as an endowment gift to the YMCA because I have a very soft spot in my heart for the YMCA. In my mid-twenties I became a single parent with three sons under the age of 4. While I was finishing my college degree my children were subsidized to attend a YMCA day care program at the Butler YMCA. The summer between my Junior and Senior year in college I did an internship at the Butler YMCA and when I graduated with a degree in Recreation Administration I was hired at that same YMCA. In 1979 I moved to Harrisburg to work as a branch executive for the YMCA in Harrisburg. I changed careers in 1984 but have always felt an attachment to my “first love” and “first career” in the YMCA. Health and fitness for the entire family and the value centered programs of the YMCA that strengthen body, mind, and spirit are core reasons that I support the YMCA. My sons learned to swim at the YMCA, were involved in Indian Guides through the YMCA with Richard Lewis who was then the Camp Shikellimy director taking them to the program. They always went to camp with the YMCA as well. Many positive memories that last a lifetime! -Diana Caine-Helwig
