January 28, 2013, Issue 330 Road To CRS: Key Notes CRS 2013 is four short weeks away and if you weren’t already goose-bumped with anticipation, today’s Country Aircheck begins a weekly sneak preview leading up to this year’s seminar. In a change from past years, CRS will present a keynote each of the event’s three days, rather than a single speaker to kick off the week. “Through our follow-up research, we found attendees enjoyed long-form presentations and speakers as much as panels in some cases,” explains CRS Exec. Dir., Bill Mayne. Bill Mayne Up first Wednesday (2/27) will be Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan. “We’re thrilled, especially in light of the recent news about Sprint giving customers access to FM stations on select smartphones, an initiative he vigorously spearheaded,” says Mayne. “Jeff will also be a great thought-starter; we like to have people who License To Chili: Mercury’s Kacey Musgraves gets ready to invoke discussion and thought during the run of CRS.” play WKIS/Miami’s 28th annual Chili Cookoff on Sunday Thursday, David Dixon will discuss radio’s influence on political (1/27) by grabbing a photo with station staffers. • Women in Country Are Benefiting from an Increasingly Strong Updating and Expanding Country Aircheck’S June 2015 Music Cycle in the Format,” He Notes
June 21, 2021, Issue 761 PPM: Spring Upswings As a format, Country is flat overall in May (see Scoreboard pg. 12); however, several stations have seen notable growth in recent months. Country Aircheck speaks with a few standouts below. KWNR/Las Vegas: MoJoe Roberts took over the PD role at iHeartMedia KWNR last August and, after averaging a 2.5 share for 2020, KWNR has now registered a run of five consecutive monthly increases. May’s 4.9 share is the station’s best since January 2019. In demo rank, KWNR has jumped from 17 to 4 in just two months (see graph, page 9). “Las Vegas was certainly a bit ahead of most of the country to open up again,” Roberts says. “All of this renewed energy Block And Roll: Warner/WAR’s Shy Carter and his label MoJoe Roberts and excitement for the onslaught of concert announcements and tactical contesting have team at the National Museum of African American Music’s certainly played a factor in our growth.” Juneteenth Block Party. Pictured (l-r) are the label’s Cris Lacy, There may be more to it than just re-opening, however. Tim Foisset, Michael Chase, Jenni Tay and Ben Kline, “We also made some key weekday staff adjustments, Carter, the label’s James Marsh, manager Missi Gallimore welcoming Lois ‘Double L’ Lewis back to the midday show and the label’s Shane Tarleton. in April,” Roberts explains. Lewis had previously worked at KWNR before transferring to KNIX/Phoenix in 2017. Roberts is also bullish on product right now.

  • Radio Reacts to the Cmas Our Veterans
November 10, 2014, Issue 422 Radio Reacts To The CMAs As expected, The 48th Annual CMA Awards (11/5) got Country radio talking and Country Aircheck has been listening. Here is what broadcast pros say did and didn’t work, and what the show meant for the format. Pop Rocks Go Country: Getting the most attention were some of the night’s cross-format performances. “It’s great,” says WDRQ (Nash FM)/Detroit PD Robby Bridges on the pop collaborations between Miranda Lambert and Meghan Trainor and Little Big Town and Ariana Grande. “It’s important for both formats to cross-pollinate – fans of Pop are sampling Country and vice versa. It makes sense for her to want to grab some fans who might listen more to country.” KPLX & KSCS/Dallas OM JR Schumann agrees. “The Swon Songs: Arista’s The Swon Brothers play some lunchtime potential for those types of performances to introduce new tunes for CMA Awards attendees. Pictured (l-r) are WUSY/ audiences is incredible,” he says. “We need Chattanooga’s Gator Harrison, KAJA/San Antonio’s Don to get out of our own way and accept the fact Gosselin, Zach Swon, KAJA’s Bree Wagner, Colton Swon, that it’s okay to talk about other things that Arista’s Lesly Simon, KBEQ/Kansas City’s Mike Kennedy, are super hot around the world – especially WKLB/Boston’s Ginny Rogers, Townsquare’s Kurt Johnson and in music. That audience that may not have Hill Entertainment’s Greg Hill.
