Species Assessment for Northeast Beach Tiger Beetle
Species Status Assessment Class: Insecta Family: Cicindelidae Scientific Name: Cicindela dorsalis dorsalis Common Name: Northeastern Beach Tiger Beetle Species synopsis: The northeastern beach tiger beetle was formerly common on coastal beaches from Massachusetts to New Jersey and along the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and Virginia. It is currently confined to a few sites in Virginia and Maryland, and two sites in Massachusetts, having been extirpated from 90% of formerly occupied sites (Schlesinger 2010). It was listed as federally Threatened in 1990. In New York, this tiger beetle was formerly distributed along many of Long Island’s barrier beaches but it appears to have been extirpated entirely by around 1950 (Stamatov 1972). The potential for reintroduction on Long Island was studied by Simmons (2008) who found that although some beaches were intact structurally, nearly all were subject to substantive and pervasive vehicular traffic and were thus unsuitable. Ideal habitat for the adult beetles and their larvae are wide, dynamic, fine sand beaches with little human or vehicular activity. Quaestiones Entomologicae 21:319-347 1985 ABSTRACT In Alberta there are 19 species of tiger beetles {Cicindela). These are found in a wide variety of habitats from sand dunes and riverbanks to construction sites. Each species has a unique distribution resulting from complex interactions of adult site selection, life history, competition, predation and historical factors. Post-pleistocene dispersal of tiger beetles into Alberta came predominantly from the south with a few species entering Alberta from the north and west. INTRODUCTION Wallis (1961) recognized 26 species of Cicindela in Canada, of which 19 occur in Alberta. Most species of tiger beetle in North America are polytypic but, in Alberta most are represented by a single subspecies. Two species are represented each by two subspecies and two others hybridize and might better be described as a single species with distinct subspecies. When a single subspecies is present in the province morphs normally attributed to other subspecies may also be present, in which case the most common morph (over 80% of a population) is used for subspecies designation. Tiger beetles have always been popular with collectors. Bright colours and quick flight make these beetles a sporting and delightful challenge to collect. -

FACT SHEET: ASIATIC SAND SEDGE Asiatic Sand Sedge Carex kobomugi Ohwi Sedge family (Cyperaceae) NATIVE RANGE Coastal areas of northeastern Asia DESCRIPTION Asiatic sand sedge is a perennial adapted to coastal beaches and dunes and possibly the only Carex species found in upper beach habitat along the U.S. Atlantic Coast. The mature sedge is a coarse and stout member of the genus that forms extensive colonies through cord-like rhizomes that extend many feet under the sand and produce new shoots. Flowering and fruiting occurs April through June and individual plants have either male or female flowers. As with many other members of the genus Carex, the flowers are numerous, subtended by scales, and arranged in spikes at the end of a flowering stalk that is triangular in cross section. A papery sac or perigynium encloses the female flowers, each of which develops into a single-seeded fruit, called an achene. Because flowering culms are evident for a relatively brief period during the spring, and some colonies and Asiatic Sand Sedgenew infestations may spread extensively without flowering, it is useful to learn to recognize the plant in its sterile form. Asiatic sand sedge may be confused with at least two colonial, rhizomatous native grass species - American beach grass (Ammophila breviligulata) and beach panic grass (Panicum amarum). Leaves of Asiatic sand sedge are longer tapering than those of the above grasses, have a yellow-green rather than bluish-green cast, and small teeth along the margin that are easily felt or seen with the help of magnification. These differences become more obvious when observed in the field.
