Hi Kathleen,

I received the input below from GNWT Health and Social Services and Health regarding monitoring mercury in Lake Trout in Nonacho Lake. It appears that the 7 year monitoring cycle proposed by NTPC will be adequate.

Have a good afternoon.

Hi Bruce,

Please see response from our expert Health Canada toxicologist. Please continue monitoring as normal ( every 7 years).

I'd probably need to take a closer look at the results; a quick comparison suggests that the fish collection done in 2010 has slightly larger (longer fish) but less variability in overall length compared to 2004. With a consumption advisory already applied to the lake, there's no real incentive to continue to monitor outside the suggested 7 years unless you get evidence to suggest the mercury levels have substantially increased (or decreased) from the current levels. If the suggested rate of "increase" stays the same, I don't see much change occurring within the next 7 years.

There's always changing climatic conditions to think about.

Mark Feeley.

How often should we monitoring mercury in water in Nonacho Lake? Currently, it is every 7 years. I see no reason to increase this since they will not find much change.

Any ideas as to how often?

Good morning,

NTPC is in the proecess of renewing their Water Licence. They have included Hg monitoring in Nonacho Lake as part of their Water Effects Monitoring Program but on a 7 year cycle. With the health advisory issued what frequency would you recommend?

Thanks very much.
