AT A GLANCE: 17 lettermen return from the 1981 squad which gave NC. State the most wins ever by a Wolfpack baseball team. The 33-12 record last season help set 11 team single season records including most runs scored (326), most hits (440), most ‘ doubles (77), most home runs (58) and most complete games by a pitching staff (23).

In the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Wolfpack was 10-4 during the regular season, tying for the top spot, but failed to advance out of the league tournament.

TOP RETURNERS: Joe Plesac and each won six games last year. Joe, 6-3, pitched nine complete games and had an earned average of 2.49, best among starters. Dan, 6-3, had five complete games and a 4.56 ERA. Joe was first team all- ACC.

Centerfieldi Ken Sears in the leading hitter returning with a .357 average last year and a career mark of .334. Louie Meadows (.322) is an /first baseman.

In all, starters return to six of eight fielding positions with three others with starting experience.

TOP LOSSES: Chuckie Canady, lst team all-conference three years running, hit .372 last year and .371 for his three-year career, opted for professional ball instead of his senior season with the Wolfpack. Led the team in HRs (10), hits (66), RBIs (59) and total bases (110). Tied school single season mark for HRS, and set marks for single season hits and RBIs. Holds Wolfpack career marks for home runs (24) and total bases (271) and is second in career hits (163), runs scored (100) and doubles (26).

Pat Sheehy, a four-year starter at , graduated. He was named second team all-ACC last spring.

SAYS COACH SAM ESPOSITO: “Judging from last year, we should have strong pitching and we should be a pretty good hit- ting ball club. Also, even though we lost Chuckie Canady—and you never really can replace a player like that—we should have a solid outfield. ‘

“Our team speed should be adequate (51 steals in 65 attempts last year). We lost experience behind the plate, but the guys there should do a good job. We’ll be looking for pitching depth, es- pecially out of the .

“I would say that catching and our middle infield are the ques- tion marks, but we really won’t know about that until we start playing.

“What really pleases me is that most of these guys have been around the past couple of seasons and have shown the ability to comeback in games. We’ve had real strong finishes the past couple of seasons. We had to win our last four ACC games last year to tie for the conference, and we did. And, I like the way we hustled in the late innings to win after making early errors.

“Our only disappointment last year was the ACC Tournament. I thought we were playing well enough to win, but we ran out of pitching. Overall I was pleased about last year and I am optimistic about this season.” ~

Here’s a look at the 1982 Wolfpack by position:

PITCHERS: Along with the Plesac brothers, Mike Pesavento (4-1) is back for the starting rotation and should be joined by Mark Roberts who was out last spring with injury but was 4-4 in sum- mer league action. Other potential starters include Jim Rivera (4- 0), Dave Peterson (4-1) and John Mirabelli, a reliever who was 5-2 as a starter in summer ball. Esposito signed two pitchers and

2 could get service from three other newcomers but will look to Frank Whitley (1-1), Nelson Carlton (1-0) and Robert Bowman (2- 1) for relief as well as to Mirabelli (six saves), Rivera (three saves) and Peterson. “The starters coming back did a good job last year and the rest of the guys gave us depth. The same should hold this season,” says Esposito. “The key could be Roberts if he has a sound arm and a strong season.”

CATCHERS: With Sheehy gone, could find a home here, but he developed shoulder problems and might find more time at first base. Toman caught in summer ball and proved effec- tive, throwing out 14 runners trying to steal. Senior Bobby Hoffman, who saw little action last spring and similar work in the summer, is also a possibility here as well as newcomers and Flip Morris.

FIRST BASE: Louie Meadows, a consistent .325 hitter, is the probable starter here along with Tim Barbour who has played three years as a starter and reliever here. Both are long ball hit- ters. Jim Toman could also play here.

SECOND BASE: A definite weak spot. Danny Bass, the start- er for two seasons, is gone, and the spot could be filled by senior Michael Sprouse, a shortstop a year ago but who played second in summer ball. Freshman Joe Maciejewski will get a shot. “We’ll just have to work until we find the right guy for the position,” says Esposito.

SHORTSTOP: If Sprouse doesn’t work out at second base, he could get a shot here along with senior Moe Barbour who played primarily at third last spring but atshortstop in summer action. Freshman will also get a shot at shortstop. “This is just like second base,” says Esposito. “We’ll just work until we find the right man for the job.”

THIRD BASE: Ray Wojkovich, the starter here last year, is back. A senior, Wojkovich hit .294 last year, his best season in three, and was a steady performer here. Back up could come from several people including Moe Barbour.

OUTFIELD: Maybe the strongest position. Counting Louie Meadows, four potential starters return with Ken Sears in center, Tracy Black in right and Chris Baird in left. Black hit .292 last season and Baird hit .295. Both had good range in the field as does Sears. Meadows will also find playing time in the outfield.

DESIGNATED HITTER: Several names could appear here from game to game, depending who starts in the field, Meadows, Toman, Baird and Tim Barbour should be the regulars here.

21 SAM ESPOSITO

Head Baseball Coach

Sam Esposito is in his 16th season as head baseball coach at NC. State University, and throughout his tenure, his accomplish- ments have pushed him into the limelight as one of the most re- spected men in collegiate baseball.

The former major league player has guided the Wolfpack to four Atlantic Coast Conference championships and a third- place finish in the College in Omaha, Neb., and, along the way, Es- posito’s team have never experienced a los- ing season.

During Esposito’s regime, the Wolfpack has had 11 seasons when it won 20 or more games. Against ACC competition, Es- posito’s team have etched a 139-98-1 rec- ord, and for all games, State’s record stands at 331-171-3, a winning percentage of.658.

The apex of his career at NC. State came in 1968 when he steered the Wolfpack to the league title, the NCAA District III championship and third-place in the World Series as the team ended the season with a 25-9 overall record.

Wolfpack teams won three straight conference championships in the early 1970s, winning the title in 1973, 1974 and 1975. The 1975 team gave State its best record ever with a 27-7 mark, a .794 percentage. The 1981 team gave State its most wins in a single season, 33.

Throughout his career, Esposito has coached many great players including present major league pitchers Mike Caldwell and Tim Stoddard. Three of his players—1968 outfielder Steve Martin, 1969 third baseman Chris Cammack, and 1979 outfielder Roy Dixon—have made all-America. And, Cammack and Caldwell were each named ACC Player-of-the-Year.

Wolfpack players being named all-conference have been a regular feature since Esposito took over in 1967.

Esposito has been singled out for numerous coaching honors, in- cluding NCAA District III Coach-of—the-Year in 1968 and co— winner of the coveted Will Wynne Award, also in 1968. The 48- year-old native of Chicago was inducted into the South Chicago Sports Hall of Fame in October of 1972, and two months later, he was tapped for similar recognition by the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame.

Esposito cut short an outstanding collegiate career at Indiana University to join the after his sophomore season. He remained in majors for 10 seasons as an infielder and helped the Chisox reach the 1959 World Series. He later returned to Indiana to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees.

After six years of prep coaching in East Chicago, he joined the Wolfpack as head baseball coach.

Esposito is married to the former Noreen Anderson of Chicago and they are the parents of a daughter, Toni, and a son, Sam, Jr.

22 RAY TANNER

Graduate Assistant Coach

Ray Tanner, a four-year fixture at third base for the Wolfpack (1977-80), is with the NC. State baseball team this season as a graduate assistant coach. It is his second season in this position. The Benson native had a career batting average of .283 and had his best season as a sophomore when he hit .315. Tanner, who earned his bachelor of science degree in recreation resources from State, is currently working on his Masters of Public Affairs.

PAT SHEEHY '

Graduate Assistant Coach

Pat Sheehy, a four-year veteran behind the plate with the Wolfpack (1978-81), con- tinues his association with North Carolina State University as a graduate assistant coach. The native of Monroeville, Pa., had a career batting average of .292. His best season at the plate was as a junior when the righthand hitter had a mark of .337 in 98 trips to the plate. Sheehy, who earned his bachelor of arts degree in business management from State, is currently working on his Masters in Economics.

23 Willis 3. Casey

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

The Director of Athletics at N. C. State University1s Willis R. Casey, one of the most respected men in athletic administration. He is currently in his 13th year as the head of the Wolfpack’s sports program, but his success story spans his lifetime.

Casey began his association at State in 1946 and quickly turned a virtually non-existent swimming program into one of national prominence, maintain- ing that level throughout his 22-year coaching stint.

At the same time, he served as Assis- tant Athletics Director and filled many other departmental roles. When ap- pointed Director of Athletics in 1969, 5-I I31-93357a’ Casey solidified the department and made it one of the tops in the country.

Two of the Wolfpack’s teams have won national titles under Casey’s reign. In 1974, the men’s basketball team captured the NCAA title while in 1979 and 1980, State’s women’s cross country squad placed first in the AIAW National Championships.

Under Casey’s direction, NC. State became the first school from the South to be ranked in the Top 10 nationally in both the men’s and women’s program. In 1974-75, the football and basket- ball teams, consistently winners under Casey, finished in the top 10 in final polls and the golf, swimming and baseball teams finished in the top 15. Overall, NC. State was ranked 10th in the nation.

In 1979-80, the women’s program was tabbed as the fourth best program for womenin the United States, according to AIAW.

The strength of the women’s program nationally is a deep source of pride to Casey, who pioneered aggressive and highly competitive women’s athletics in the state of North Carolina and throughout the region.

Casey has been honored by selection to many national commit- tees, including the NCAA Rules Committee, the NCAA all- America Selection Board, the AAU Board of Governors, the NCAA Long-Range Planning Committee and the NCAA Basket— ball Committee.

Casey’s success can be traced back to his high school days at Goldsboro where he astonishingly lettered in six different sports before an illness ended his athletics career.

After graduation from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Casey began his coaching career at N. C. State. His Wolfpack swimming teams won 11 conference championships, compiling a phenomenal 188-29 dual meet record during the span.

Thirty-three Wolfpack swimmers attained All-America honors under his tutledge, including Steve Rerych who won two Gold Medals for the United States in the 1968 Olympics.

Casey, during’his tenure at State, has served as supervisor of the school’s various athletic facilities and was of 36 ma- jor basketball tournaments.

During his multi—year service, which totals more than three decades, Casey has been a coach and an administrator, and has brought recognition and esteem to the institution during each of his many assignments.
