MENU OPTION ACTIVITIES

Station WHRO-TV, WHRO-FM, WHRV(FM) have engaged in the following outreach activities during the year covered by this report:

Activity 䐁Type of Activity Classification Type of Activity Brief Description 4 Events sponsored by Education for older students is at the core of WHRO educational institutions relating education. WHRO’s Online Course Service has developed to broadcasting careers. 22 online, textbook-independent high school courses. A seven-week Online Teaching Methodology course that teachers how to be successful in a K-12 online teaching environment are regularly refreshed to align with current Virginia Standards of Learning and new courses are currently in development. In addition, three new eTextbooks are also in production for the current school year.

Nearly 400 entries were received from aspiring artist and authors in kindergarten through 5th grade for the 21st Annual PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest. Winners and their families celebrated at an awards ceremony and were taped reading their stories for a television show broadcast on WHRO and streamed online.

Summer 2015 WHRO conducted 2 Odd Squad Camps that served 40 children in title 1 areas. In partnership with Titustown Community Center and East Ocean view Community Center, WHRO provided an opportunity to create an interactive learning camp for kids in the neighborhood. Each camp engaged K-3rd graders in hands-on, PBS KIDS learning activities, games, and other online resources that spanned reading, science, writing and social studies.

Summer 2015 The Production Department provided a tour from Alabaster Box Center of Performing Arts in Virginia Beach. Eight students between 10-14 years old and two adults.

Fall 2015 Ashla Hill Roseboro, A Howard University Student visited WHRO for 2-days for observations and interviews. She was provided an opportunity to come to a Public Broadcasting Station to perform an ethnographic study. The research was conducted to explore gender and media management as part of her studies at Howard University in the Communications, Culture and Media Studies Program.

Spring 2016 the WHRO Production Department conducted a tour for 10-15 students and one instructor from Norfolk State University. The Director of Children Services Intern also joined the tour. The Students were shown and given a brief overview of what takes places in each TV production and TV Audio room with Greg Carter, TV Control room with Robert Pitman, Editing Suite with Eric Simon. Lisa Godley, Producer gave a brief description of her job duties. They also toured Master Control, FM Studios and pledge central. 5 Internship Program As part of its community commitment to serve the public, WHRO works with colleges and high schools in and out of the area offering a number of unpaid internship opportunities. Again during this reporting period, WHRO sponsored college and high school internships and externships. The interns were place in a variety of WHRO department such as Television Programming and Production, Development, Community Engagement, Engineering, Master Control, Online Media, Marketing, Information Technology, Radio, Music and Art Journalism and Educational Services. During May 2016 WHRO’s Director of Children Services hosted an ODU English Language Center Externship Student for three weeks. WHRO’s Internship Program is an on-going effort throughout the year. 8 Training Program The Human Resources Officer and Staff Accountant attended job related and compliance seminars and webinars during this period related to the Affordable Care Act Reporting Requirements, Top Developments in Employment Law, FLSA Overtime Exemptions: Recent Changes and Future Developments, Tips for Dealing with Employees with Medical Conditions. Employment and Benefit Laws seminars were sponsored by our insurance broker, local legal firms, the Virginia Employment Commission, and the local chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management.

During the Winter 2016 Marshall & Associates were engaged to hold three management training workshops. Some Staff recently attended the PBS Annual Conference in Chicago. The HR Officer serves on the PMBA Board and the PMBA Board Content Committee and will attend the PMBA in person board meetings and Annual Conference in New Orleans May 31-June 3, 2016. WHRO’s CFO and Controller will also attend the conference. The HR Officer and Corporate Support Director attended a seminar April 20, 2016 on Building Reputation and Empowering Ambassadors through Employee Engagement. HR Officer and CFO participated in PMBA Labor & Employment Law Update 2015 presented by Attorney, Kristina Vaquera, Jackson Lewis P.C. HR Officer, Annual Fund Officer, VP Content and Assistant to the President participated in a PMBA Webinar titled Fruit Basket Turnover-Millennial Style presented by JC Patrick, Principal, JC Patrick Consulting. 11 Community events designed to WHRO’s Raising Readers Literacy Van, a cheerful, brightly inform/educate public of colored vehicle featuring children’s favorite PBS characters broadcasting careers. toured throughout our broadcast region. Inside the van, children find age appropriate books and games. The van made more than 100 visits during this period.

With 12,000 enrollments in 2015, Virtual Virginia, a program of the Virginia Department of Education, features nearly 50 online Advanced Placement, world language, core academic and elective courses. WHRO is the state Operations Center providing hosting, contracting, and instructional design services, help desk support, video streaming and other virtual staffing.

WHRO in partnership with Old Dominion University hosted its Annual Great Computer Challenge again this year. The GCC is a competition for students in grades K-12 to demonstrate their skills in various computer applications and computer programming, including Graphic Arts, Desktop Publishing, Music Composition, Desktop Presentations, Web Design, Integrated Applications and JAVA. Several years ago we added a Video Editing category to the Great Computer Challenge Senior Division.

From time to time Angie Callahan, Director Children Services has participated as a judge in student video productions competitions.

WHRO and Landmark Communications collaborated to produce and televise the 9th annual Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee. Hosted by Raymond Jones. Hampton Roads’ finest young spellers competed in the live broadcast on our television channel TV15.

Opinion polls show a growing divide when it comes to issues of race in the country. This growing separation is a strong indicator that conversations about race are needed more now than even before. In an effort to help facilitate these conversations WHRO launched a new initiative called Race Let’s Talk About It. Our goal is to offer a safe space for civil and thoughtful discussions about race and its impact on society from a historical, academic, and sociological perspective. 14 Management/Staff training in June 2015, HR Officer and Manager, SkillsOnLine equal employment opportunity participated in a PMBA Webinar on Community and career development Engagement through Diversity Programming. October 2015 WHRO’s Manager SkillsOnLine, Barbara Hamm Lee; Producer, Lisa Godley and HR Officer, Sherby Wilks attended the area’s 2nd all day Annual Eastern Virginia Regional Diversity & Inclusion Conference sponsored by the Hampton Roads Diversity and Inclusion Consortium. Lisa Godley on February 25, 2015 was one of the Panelist for a national webinar hosted by NETA Community Engagement Council. The webinar’s topic was Facilitating Difficult Discussions. Annual Fund Officer and HR Officer participated in a NETA Webinar on Keeping Good Employees. HR Officer also participated in a PMBA Webinar on Training Public Media’s New Leaders.
