Readers of books have little inclination to trouble themselves with an author's views and motives, when he volunteers to come before them. It is, therefore, for reasons in which he himself is personally concerned, and which will be appreciated by those whom the fact may chance to interest, that the translator of the following collection of Beranger's lyrics disavows, at the outset, any sympathy whatever with the political doctrines that they so broadly inculcate. Were the writer in his own country, it would be absurdly egotistical to couple any such declaration with a purely literary effort. Place, however, and peculiar circum- stances render it pardonable, that an Englishman, strongly and steadily attached to the monarchical institutions of his native land, should make this reservation, when aspiring to lay before the Citi- zens of a Republic a work that breathes the very essence of Re- publicanism. Beranger, the darling poet of his countrymen and the admiration of the lettered world, is a master of song, not the founder of a creed. One half of these versions—herein very carefully revised, and in some instances re-written—were published in London, three years ago. Of the second hundred, a dozen have appeared in the columns of the New-York Albion. -

Substance and Providence in the Old French Theological Romance Abstract The doctrine of divine providence was considered fundamental to understanding the nature of reality in medieval Christian orthodoxy. One of our greatest modern impediments to proper understanding of this law are the radically different ontologies that flourished in the Latin estW through the recuperation of Ancient thought, most notably in the divisions between the Platonists and the Aristotelians. Whereas Biblical exegesis owed more to Augustine's Platonism, the rise of Aristotelian thought in the university curriculum entailed a serious threat to the doctrine of providence. The translation and dissemination of Islamic Aristotelians revealed an almost identical challenge to Islamic orthodoxy on the same matter. Philosophical, and especially ontological, speculation on the nature of substance (ontology) was therefore fertile ground for heresy. The main works under examination are the anonymous Queste del Saint Graal and the continuation of the Roman de la Rose by Jean de Meun. Deeply imbued with Augustinian figuralism and Biblical history, the Queste strongly distinguishes itself from the rest of the Lancelot en Prose, most notably La Mort le Roi Artu, in its theological purpose. -

ART HUMANITIES: PRIMARY SOURCE READER Section 1: The Parthenon Art Humanities Primary Source Reading 1 Thucydides, "Funeral Oration of Pericles" EXCERPT FROM HISTORY OF THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR, 5TH CENTURY B.C. Thucydides, one of the most important Greek writers of the period during which the Parthenon was constructed, is the author of a history of the war between Athens and Sparta (the so-called Peloponnesian War, 431-404 BCE). As an Athenian general, Thucydides was a first-hand witness to the conflict. His history, an incomplete work in eight books, includes a famous speech by the statesman Pericles, one of the most prominent leaders of the Athenian democracy. The speech is a funeral oration, delivered during public ceremonies the winter after the beginning of the war to honor soldiers killed in the first campaign. As a tribute to the fallen, Pericles praises the city of Athens as the embodiment of the ideals Athenian soldiers died to defend. To the grieving populace, he says: “I would have you day by day fix your eyes upon the greatness of Athens,” alluding at least in part to the city’s massive religious sanctuary, whose centerpiece was the Parthenon. Set high above the city on the Acropolis plateau, this temple to Athena had been inaugurated in 432, only one year before the outbreak of war. The Parthenon and its lavish sculptural decoration transformed the Acropolis into a celebration of Athenian civic principles and pride; it was in many ways a political monument as well as a religious center. The Greek world of the 5th century BCE was divided into more or less autonomous city-states, of which Athens and Sparta were among the most powerful and feared. -
